Wow. Great video, and a very nice headline, would click again.

So check out how closely a Predator and an HK can look (from certain angles.) The HK predates the Predator in real life, but on the Terminator timeline, you can see the evolution...

Can I get those in Stealth?

I'll take a dozen.

Yeah, what are the odds that two aircraft would have a vaguely similar shape? Crazy, right?

Pretty cool. So now I just need a portable EMP and a tin foil hat.

Laugh it up, people. When the revolution happens, and it's going to, these are going to be flocking around outside relaying info to the ground units.

Nah. I think a shotgun loaded up with #7 high brass shells would be fine.

I am thinking those are way too small to be useful for anything but an indoor toy, a light breeze would be dangerous. I've played with much bigger coaxial helos like the Blade CX2 and it doesn't do well in the wind.

Still pretty nifty though.

Someone with skills needs to make a gif of these things in formation being shot at like Space Invaders.

I'm old.

2012-02-01 08:58:12 AM
wow, the formation part made me crap my pants and my bolas shrivel...

2012-02-01 09:04:01 AM
those things are REALLY neat ...but look like they would not function outside the mo-cap "box"

Imagine slightly larger versions with a small antipersonnel charge built into them, programmed to seek out infrared signatures roughly 1.5 to 2.5 meters tall, and .5 to 1 meter in width, close to within 2 meters, and detonate.

A flight of them would be a formidable way to clear a structure without causing significant damage (ie., tossing a grenade in every room). Not perfect, of course, but useful, not to mention their intelligence gathering potential.

Here's an idea for the demonstration video. Have them move into a formation that resembles the stereotypical Space Invader like from the video game Space Invaders. That square formation at the 0:40 point reminded me of a wave of Space Invaders

It's not the toys so much as the programming that they were pointing out.

At least that is the message I got from it.

I was impressed, but then, I'm easily impressed.

We have a similar product already. They're called "cluster munitions." Okay, they don't have the smart targeting capability, but they don't need it.

Wrist Rocket would serve nicely.

Was this done at the Air Hogs research institute? How soon can I fly one in my house and get it stuck in my Aussie Shepherd's coat. That was an accident, BTW. I'll have my check or money order for 19.95 ready to place in the mail as soon as I see the commercial on the History channel.

I liked the claw formation. Takes me back to Homeworld days. Great game.

OK, now make them people-sized and give me my damn flying car already.

The rc coaxials such as the Blade CX, and its offspring have the flaw of the free floating top rotor, which while give stability in no wind, suffer from becoming a "sail" when it does blow. This design also sacrifices quick mobility entirely for the sake of stability without needing computer controls.

The quad copters are using gyro's and a computer to manage stability, and when it wants to, they can do amazing quick movements, which even this video showed a little of.

However you are correct, it would be useless in the wind at this size, since they probably could not carry a payload of a large enough battery for more than a few minutes. But the software to control them, and the tech to make their circuits small are usefull for when you want to build a larger scale to save weight for the real important stuff.

I was thinking the same thing, actually. I always just used the wall formation, though.

/no Homeworld on GOG :\

And we just look up and reply, "Because we want to."

If mass produced these would cost what? $20? $10? You know how much they spend on a missile? Or a trained soldier? Just release 200 bot swarms and ram them into noggins. Extra killing power if you rub a little poison on them first.

Nah. If my time with Half-life II taught me anything, it's that small-scale flying automated kill-bots are easily dispatched with basic melee weapons and small-arms.

I was thinking a strip of flypaper. Small enough to not be very visible to their imaging, but murder on the rotors.

Maybe streamers of fishing line hung from the ceiling.

Ten thousand of these with RGB LEDs as a field-deployable swarm screen that flies around as a giant video screen displaying propaganda.

Lovely. Anyone got a link to the project itself? I assume an external computer control, with a degree of autonomy in the craft.
Or is this emergent behaviour?
Nosey buggers want to know.

I suppose that it is illegal to own a .20 guage shotgun with a drum-fed magazine.

This is the stuff of nightmares.......
