A fool and his money are soon parted.

That saying goes through my head a lot when I read about all the articles of religious weirdos trying to push their religion in public spaces. They never seem to learn.

Case law is still against the statues placement, as a Rhode Island high school recently found out regarding the prayer they had hanging in their school since the 50's.

It doesn't matter how long something has been around, if it is found unconstitutional, it is unconstitutional.

Easy solution: Just take a few whacks at it with poles or skis or boots every time you pass it.

You just know some dick is going to sneak up and deface/remove it now, just like that cross situation in that other place (my Google-fu is weak or else I'd reference it more directly). Hopefully the people who want it to stay will devise a (legal, preferably) way to ensure that doesn't happen.

And since this the U.S. Forest Service can't change the constitution, this is still unconstitutional.

Skiing Jeebus will be removed in time. All that happen this week was the Forrest Service decided that they want the government to waste a few million dollars trying to defend their indefensible, illegal, unconstitutional, (stupid) decision.

There isn't a legal way to keep it there. It's illegal and unconstitutional. It will be removed.

FTFFRF. Looks like attention whoring/trolling to me.
I am sure many many people have cracked a grin when encountering the statue wearing ski equipment. Someone has a sense of humor, and it certainly seems that the FFRF does not.

Next thing you know, they will be going to Rio to protest that statue. Too much whining, not enough work.

Yeah, spend your funds actually fighting against something that matters. Like same sex marriage bans. Don't worry so much about the Jesus with the ski poles. Thanks.

Isn't it legal if all religions get to put their special dudes and/or dudettes up there as well? Or is that only on state/city/county land? 'Cuz I'd have no problem with skiing Jeebus if I could put an Odin up next to him.

Actually, I'd go for Odin's son Vidar, god of vengeance. He appeals to me so much more.

You know, I am as much of an athiest as anyone, but really.

It is not hurting anything. It is not hurting anyone.

It has been there for a long time with no issues.

Why fool with it?

If this was a 60 year old muslim statue that someone wanted to wipe out, everyone would be screaming racism.

This is really no different.

If you waqnt to be religious, fine. Don't force it on other people.

If you want to be an athiest, fine. Don't force it on other people.

They do.

But they also have to address things that have been around longer that are still unconstitutional.

It's a rather blasphemous idol anyways, as idols go. Jesus wasn't a skier. He lived in the desert. They don't even have snow.

2012-02-01 11:47:49 AM
Oh my god. I've just come up with a brilliant plan. The FSM and Pastafarians have been recognized as a legitimate religion. I'm going to start a petition to have spaghetti banned from being served in all government buildings since it is no different than serving food with Jesus silverware.

On the other hand that is one god I don't mind being force fed.

this is just plain farking stupid. It is a symbolic case. It has no impact on anyone's life. Those funds can be better spent elsewhere on things that are actually encroaching on people's freedom of religion than a statue on a mountain.
Then again, it is their money but still, dumb dumb dumb.

It's "hurting" everyone who doesn't follow Jesusianity. It's an implicit endorsement of a specific religion.

Yeah, this is a stupid argument. If it were a muslim statue, it would've been taken down many many years ago by some Christian group. And if it somehow survived, you can bet the FFRF would be doing exactly what they're doing now.
This is really no different.

By keeping a purely religious icon on public property, they are forcing their religion on other people. Atheists aren't forcing anyone into anything with the action, other than to stop the push of Christianity.

The FFRF are nothing but bitter attention whores.

Standing up for the constitution is attention whoring now? Now wonder everyone's so eager to give up their rights.

"It is a symbolic case. It has no impact on anyone's life.".

Then why is the Forest Service, Knights of Columbus, general public throwing a hissy fit about following the law?

Because it does not impact anyone's life?

It is a bit like tilting at windmills when there are a host of other laws that serve no secular purpose (i.e. don't pass the Lemon Test) that should be removed from the books.

I don't understand how fighting gay marriage bans is a quixotic fight while there are statues of Jesus on mountains.

That logic makes no sense to me

So will I have to look at the atheist symbols on public land?
Get a sense of humor and get back to me.

/I agree with Foxtail all the way. It's been there for years. Who cares? Oh yeah, a bunch of people who would rather biatch about a bunch of silly stuff. How about they get out there and pass out some free shoes, or maybe make a bunch of kites for poor kids?
For some reason, I really get fired up about crap like this. It's one thing to start erecting religious statues in all our parks and stuff, but one that's been in the middle of nowhere for many years? Who effin cares, other than a bunch of whiny asses. Put up one of your other religious (or atheist) statues somewhere else in the woods. It would be kind of cool to be able to stumble into various religious symbols. Maybe put a plaque up near them explaining the importance...

And what of atheist groups that get to put up symbols on public land? Are they somehow superior? I don't care if it Buddha, Jeebus, Satan, or one of the Greek gods.
This world has more problems than just wasting time with an old and busted statue.

I've got work to do. You all have a pleasant day. :-)

I think the statue is probably unconstitutional, but I don't see how it forces religion on anyone. Does the statue compel one to believe in God, attend church, sing in the choir? Didn't think so.

You don't understand the first amendment. It's not about freedom from religion. It's about freedom to practice religion and the government not endorsing a specific religion. As long as the government doesn't block x and allow y, it is not endorsing a specific religion.

The statue has been a curiosity at the famed Big Mountain ski hill for decades, mystifying skiers with its appearance in the middle of the woods as they cruise down a popular run.

So dude, I was like totally shredding some fierce powder bro and I saw this like Jesus statue there in the middle of like nowhere. Totally didn't like see that coming. Totally mystified cuz, like a person couldn't have like intentionally put that there. You know bro?

But Forest Service supervisor Chip Weber said the revised decision took into account that the statue is eligible for placement on National Register of Historic Places, and that no substantive concerns related to environmental conditions were found in about 95,000 comments received by the agency.

Slavery is also part of US history. I should be allowed to keep slaves because it's part of history.

If someone removed and destroyed it, that removes this 'historic place' B.S. special designation TFA claimed the statue had. Putting up a new one would remove that designation

Most people eat pineapples not shove them up their asses, try that next time. You'd have more room for your various strawmen.

If a statue is a "place"* then I can use any analogy I want.

I thought Jesus lives inside us, not us inside of jesus.
