It's all a ploy to raise more money. And to get us to wear pink and ribbons and shiat.

2012-02-01 11:01:02 AM
Charity is big business.

There's too much money involved to worry about some poor schmuck who might have their cancer go undetected.

The more I hear about this particular foundation the more I hate it. My cousins' mother died of breast cancer so my cousins are very active with this foundation. I hate to chastise them for it, but I wonder if they know how horrible it is.

SGK recently got a new director of communications who is an anti-abortion nutjob.

A good post on Balloon-Juice:

As someone who lives in a house surrounded by a bunch of pink-ribbon-branded Komen paraphernalia, I am beyond pissed about the Komen foundation's decision to end a program that paid for 170,000 breast exams and 6,400 mammogram referrals. My sister-in-law died of breast cancer after an ugly 7-year ordeal, and during her fight and since then we've spent a fair amount of money and time, most of it through the Komen Foundation, to try to fight that awful disease. It's a tragedy and waste that Komen chose to elevate some politically-minded hack to a position where she would be able to pursue an anti-Planned Parenthood agenda instead of doing what the Komen Foundation was founded to do: fight breast cancer. There is no immediate replacement for Planned Parenthood's sliding-scale services in the areas it serves. So it is no exaggeration to say that, unless the Komen funding is replaced, more women will die of breast cancer because of this decision.

That said, I'm confident that Komen's funding will be replaced, and also that Komen will be a pale pink shadow of its former self unless it reverses this stupid decision and fires the people responsible. Check out list after list after list of Komen's corporate sponsors. Do you think New Balance, Ford and Georgia-Pacific signed on for a public fight over Planned Parenthood? When Yoplait put a pink lid on its yogurt, did they do it to make it easier to boycott their products? Because that's what's going to happen. Unlike most boycotts, it's easy to figure out which products you shouldn't buy: anything that displays a pink ribbon with the Komen name.

2012-02-01 11:47:21 AM
Ah yes Komen, the organization that likes to sue other charities that use the word "cure" in their name. (new window)

Kazan: SGK recently got a new director of communications who is an anti-abortion nutjob.

Yep. From here:

Karen Handel, who was endorsed by Sarah Palin during her unsuccessful bid for governor of Georgia in 2010, has been the Foundation's Senior Vice President for Public Policy since April 2011. During her gubernatorial candidacy, she ran on an anti-choice platform, vowing that if elected, she'd defund Planned Parenthood. Handel wrote on her campaign blog,

I will be a pro-life governor who will work tirelessly to promote a culture of life in Georgia.... I believe that each and every unborn child has inherent dignity, that every abortion is a tragedy, and that government has a role, along with the faith community, in encouraging women to choose life in even the most difficult of circumstances.... since I am pro-life, I do not support the mission of Planned Parenthood.

She even promised to eliminate funding for breast and cervical cancer screenings provided by the organization.

How curious! A person with what looks like a personal vendetta against Planned Parenthood joins the ranks of an organization that provides funding to Planned Parenthood, and soon, that organization "defunds" Planned Parenthood. But surely this couldn't be about Handel's personal feelings. According to Komen, this is about rule following. Protocol.

The Komen foundation is notifying Planned Parenthood affiliates that it will not give them more money for breast cancer programs. Clearly, this does not reflect any change in Komen's attitude toward breast cancer. It does reflect a realization that contributions are fungible, so that cash sent to one program is an aid to Planned Parenthood's moneymaker, abortion-and abortion is losing its mainstream support.

I suspect Komen will find other organizations that screen for breast cancer but do not include 'killing children' in their business plan.

Mark Ratner: It's all a ploy to raise more money. And to get us to wear pink and ribbons and shiat.

It seems like a bad ploy, then. They're bowing to pressure from groups that hate women.

2012-02-01 12:47:41 PM
Meh. I haven't really like Komen since they started suing smaller groups for raising money for charity using things like Ribbons and "Races-for-the-cure." Seems like they're transitioning to political advocacy group.

The asinine thing is the PP apparently thinks abortions are a more important health service to women than breast cancer screenings.

This just exposes them as the single issue ideologues that they really are.

You realize that gynecological exams, STI screenings and birth control/sexual education are their biggest uses, right? Followed by breast care? Abortions aren't their biggest commodity.

Nothing stupid about it. Stop the abortions, get the breast cancer screening money. That simple.

Komen has their priorities and so does PP.

Has PP announced how much of their unrestricted funds they will now allocate to breast cancer screening? Or are they saving it for abortions?

2012-02-01 01:19:49 PM
They're working for a cure for rich people, not treament for poor people.

2012-02-01 01:21:07 PM
Komen said it could not continue to fund Planned Parenthood because it has adopted new guidelines that bar it from funding organizations under congressional investigation. The House oversight and investigations subcommittee announced in the fall an investigation into Planned Parenthood's funding.

If that's the only reason then it kind of makes sense. You don't want to donate money to an organization under investigation. Whether they will resume funding after the investigation is over is the more crucial detail.

No. You don't know how to read. Komen hasn't said anything about abortions.

Why do you post stupid things?

2012-02-01 01:22:19 PM
I have had Komen foot bills for research I have done, and also knew (as an insider) that when I (for example) got my fancy, special Komen mixer I had to go out of my way to make sure the 10% went to the research not the pocketbook. (Almost all Komen high-end tie-ins, Kitchenaid, stuff like that, won't do diddly if you don't go through the fine print version of the registration, pay extra 10% for research, don't send in the pink card-no go.)

I've generally supported BCRF (new window) over them for years.

However, when I worked in advocacy, one of the stories of the people I met had said how she had a small lump, forgot about it, saw a woman on a bus with a pink water bottle and decided to do a websearch the doctor appointment when she got to work. Ended up getting an aggressive tumor taken care of early because someone either chose a ribbon product (or, like me) just likes the color pink. (Being a woman, married to a woman, doing sciency techie guy stuff in bright pink sneakers or a pink hard hat makes my day, sorry)

So, I will once again say fark you very hard to Komen, but as someone with my own double plus bad set of post-menopausal loaded alleles pointed at the DDDs, I will not say it loud, and I will probably still nod respectingly.

I think the debate is that it is a legit medical procedure and that they feel ethically obligated to offer it as it goes hand in hand with their other reproductive health care offerings.

Yea, I'm sure Republicans won't launch another "investigation" just to prevent more funding. They're way above that. No way they'd be that petty...
