""The officer, in the first instance, and the superintendent, in turn were, more than a little ahead of themselves here," McEwan said.

"It is still the law ... that we sanction people for what we can prove they have done, not for what we suspect they may have been a part of; nor do we substitute arbitrariness for due process because the public is in an 'uproar.'""

I'd like to buy that judge a Molson.

Was he part of that group? Probably. Was he driving like an asshat and breaking laws? Probably.

But in the free world, especially in common-law countries, "probably" means exactly fark all. Next time maybe bring some evidence, Const. Fife.

I'd also like to contribute to the Molson fund for Judge McEwan.

Mounties seized 13 luxury vehicles that were allegedly speeding excessively through Metro Vancouver in broad dayling.

huh?

Do they mean daylight? If they did it at night they'd complain that was more dangerous due to reduced visibility.

NightOwl2255: This may surprise people, but cops can and do issue tickets based on witness statements.

I remember spending ten minutes behind a War of 1812 veteran in a giant Cadillac doing 20 in a 55 waiting for a place to pass legally once. I finally found a spot to pass him and not two minutes later there was a license checkpoint. Just as the cop who was checking my license handed it back a big fat spittle-flecked bald deputy ran up to me and poked his head in my window to say,
"That passin' on a double-yella ain't no good, boy!"
"When did you see me do that?"
"That feller back there said you passed him on a double-yella."
"I wish I had. I'd have been here minutes ago if I hadn't waited for the only gap on this highway to pass him. He's a hazard."
"...I got my eye on you."

I get it. I made the old guy's pen0r shrink by passing him and he had the chance to get payback. Witness statements should NEVER be enough, because people are worthless.

Not that I sympathize with the street racing kiddies at all, but the "wrong kind of attention" is a big part of why I keep thinking about getting rid of my Mustang and picking up a smaller hatchback.

What's the point of owning a high powered sports car if you don't drive it recklessly? make the paper or don't bother I say.

Much as I'd love a high powered car, I know I'd kill myself driving it. But yes, I am Mr. Safety in my 4 cylinder Kia for now.

Not just safety, but recurring revenue.

1. Pull over rich asshat in sports car
2. Trump up some charges and confiscate the car. Who will care? He's a rich asshat.
3. Sell car to different rich asshat
4. Pull over rich asshat in sports car

Who comments on newspaper stories?

1. Friends and family of those involved: Generally predictable, but occasionally awesome.
2. Obama trolls (and Bush trolls back in the day).
3. Other random trolls.

No surprise at all what kind of comments are in pretty much EVERY story.

You know, I'm not really a fan of killing, but I'm honestly confused about how this story still has legs, to the point that it gets Salon propagandizing like the left's Daily Mail. I don't see a "capture or kill" list as being any different from what the police have going into a standoff with an untried but witnessed and known criminal on the run during a manhunt.

I suppose they could hold secret trials (against secret defendants, so no defense), but that would make an even bigger mockery of justice. I assume if only 3 people are on that list, it must not be an indiscriminate list that anyone can throw names at based on hunches. Sometimes a slippery slope is really just a rocky cliff. But at least it is reaffirming that people are still having this debate, beyond the usual Obama trolls, because at least it shows that people aren't completely numbed to the idea of civil liberties being a passe joke.

A more levelheaded treatment. (new window)

You seem to post that in every BC thread, it looks like you've given into the hate.

I live in the city and I see a whole bunch of this crap all of the time. I've honestly lost count the number of times a supercar has just about run right into me in the West Van/Richmond area. These guys deserved to have their cars taken away and licences suspended. I'm pretty sure at least one of their cars has been sold.

Eh, you can't judge an area based upon online comments, it just doesn't work. I'm a Caucasian in British Columbia and as long as they're driving safely then I'm just fine with them driving whatever they want. There's a very good looking Japanese girl who can't be more than 20 driving around in a white DB9, I wouldn't mind getting to know her if you know what I mean.

Also, in Vancouver, everyone has money. Otherwise they couldn't afford to live there.

Caucasians perfected street racing before Asians built cars. What I don't get is that the hate of rich whites is always tempered by deep envy, more of a "they don't deserve it but I do," but the hate on other races flaunting wealth is always a deep, ugly hatred, a "they deserve to die and I'll be happy to do it" kind of thing.

I live in a pretty multicultural area and everybody makes jokes with varying levels of humor and malice in person, but I only ever see that kind of seething hate locally on Craigslist and the news comments.

This is so very true. Vancouver is an incredibly beautiful city, it doesn't deserve to have it's name dragged through the mud just because a few thousand people (out of over a million) were stupid.

That being said, Unwashed is from Alberta. People from Alberta hate everyone else in Canada, especially BC. That being said people from BC and Saskatchewan think of Alberta as the hick cousin in the middle of the dinner table throwing a tantrum over their intense dislike of green beans. We put up with them because it's not nice to be mean to people who equate the size of their pickup truck to their worth in society, which just may be how it works in 'Berta.

So? Did the cop see them speeding? Then no ticket. Unless anyone actually believes cops should start doling out punishments because someone says they saw something.
