'foibles' is a word you just don't hear enough these days.

His TV show was not all that great - available through netflix.
However, I did love his running for office.

he called himself "a common, ordinary simple savior of America's destiny"

Classic. Very Colbertian.

My favorite bit: in the middle of one of his speeches, his watch alarm starts screeching. He attempts to turn it off and in frustration he dunks it in his drinking water. He takes a drink and says, "I drink no time, before it whines,"
/okay so I was a kid during the Orsen Wells sell no wine before its time days...

He's still alive. Wow he must be just as old as Abe Vigoda.

Oh wait he is dead. Never mind.

I knew Rolling Stone is written for imbeciles, but really: "But playing off a slowly building public awareness of the influence of cash in politics, Paulsen was seen raising funds at lemonade stands, kiss-for-a-quarter offers, and a celeb-studded dinner where Steve Allen, the David Letterman of his day, was a guest speaker.

Who, under the age of 15, doesn't know who Steve Allen is?

/Old enough to have written-in Pat Paulsen.
//Night Patrol is a criminally underrated movie.
///Amused by the misspelling of his name on the video clip.

I'd say Colbert carried on the tradition, but your butt hurty version is pretty funny.

/btw, your shtick on this site is quite the tradition

I have a vague recollection that somebody used Paulsen's candidacy and appearances on the Smothers Brothers show to demand "equal time" on the network, and got it. Some pundit made note that the law actually said, "equal opportunity" and said that they should have just handed the guy a script and told him to read his lines.

"Coffee's 49 cents."

"How much are refills?"

"Refills are free."

"Okay, I'll have a refill....and a slice of garlic cake."

Yeah no kidding. What's next, someone going to blow the lid off the political/social/satirical comedy stylings of the Firesign Theater?

What are the odds that ancient Greece or Rome had its share of political comedians? Is there anything new under the sun? We must know!

Well, there was that minstrel showman turned political satirist Millard Fillmore. Trouble is though, his humor was just too ahead of his time, no one got his jokes, and he ended up winning. Joke's on us!

If you watch Fallon, his sidekick is a dead ringer for Allen, which is kind of meta if you think about it.

Sorry - irony detector on the fritz. My first clue was when it didn't budge when pointed at The Fairie Queen. And no, I don't mean Marcus Bachmann.
