Kung Fu Hustle wins everything forever.
I have never seen a theater more entertained by one show.

Tony made the list twice. Ip Man, and Legend of Drunken Master are great movies.

Although Tony isn't in either of them.

2012-01-31 11:55:11 AM
No Donnie Yen vs. Jet Li in Once Upon a Time in China? That's conspicuously missing.

Was glad to see him on the list. He's freakish to watch. I also need to watch some movies. Good find, Subby!

God dammit Subby. Thanks for making me waste my day on this. Great.

I like Kung Fu Hustle, but I think Shaolin Soccer is a more entertaining movie.

But that's just me.

Also, no love for Scott Pilgrim?

2012-01-31 12:10:20 PM
All I got was an 8-bit pic of Mario being informed that some uppity whore-by-birthright could be found in some other location.

Anyone got a list?

Asian cinema. The article was clear in limiting it to Asian cinema.

There is Tony Ja.

FTA: "If there is one invaluable life lesson that everyone in the world should know, it's that under no circumstances should you ever steal, or be a part of stealing Tony Jaa's elephant. Seriously, heed my advice. Do not take this warning lightly. Why, you ask? Look at this scene to see what will happen to you if you ignore my counsel. Don't say I didn't warn you. "

The evolution of Thai movies is really coming along. They have taken a lot of the fun stuff from HK cinema, and working on tiny budgets, and with great choreography. It's got a lot in common with how French action movies have borrowed heavily from the classic HK cinema, and made that frenetic action their own.

Nothing from Chocolate?

Also, the Street Fighter scene from City Hunter deserves mention just for it's sheer insanity.

missing Chocolate is a mistake ...

That the hall fight from Oldboy is on there so I can complain too much

The first dual in Twilight Samurai is damn near my favorite fight scene ever filmed though. Love that damn movie.

I watched one, can't remember the name off the top of my head, with this big Australian wrestling dude... AH! Here it is. "Muay Thai Giant". Had one of the best fight scenes ever. Two women against a street gang. Bitter melon used in a weapon other than just cooking. Not a great movie, but worth watching IMO.

unchellmatt: Jet Li did Unbound, and it was gorgeous. Luc Besson produced it, and it was a great film. The alternate title is Danny the Dog.

Luc is brining up a lot of directors up, and is really making very European movies, but with that scrappy HK feel, and inventive action sequences. District 13 was a lot of fun.

ShamWowofDamocles: Anyone got a list?

Wish granted :

20. The Invincible Armor
19. Merantau
18. Kung Fu Hustle
17. The Iceman Cometh
16. Hero
15. The Man from Nowhere
14. SPL (a.k.a. Kill Zone)
13. Way of the Dragon
12. Oldboy
11. The Protector
10. Fist of Legend
9. Fist of Fury
8. Wheels on Meals
7. Flash Point
6. Police Story
5. The Protector
4. The Young Master
3. Dragons are Forever
2. Ip Man
1. Drunken Master II (aka The Legend of the Drunken Master)

2012-01-31 01:09:10 PM
The Meals on Wheels fight is just stellar.

Huge fan of Sammo and Yuen Bao, so Dragons are Forever was a nice addition too. Those years really cemented a lot of the teams that shaped HK action cinema, and brought up a lot of talent, not just in HK, but all across the world.

Wheels on Meals, found at 3:55 in (using clip in TFA) :

"At one point in the final battle between the pair, a spin-kick performed by Urquidez is so quick that the resulting airflow extinguishes a row of candles. This is shown onscreen, with no cuts or trick photography."

It's actually a candelabra, and that is awesome.

2012-01-31 01:58:08 PM
I'd say the list is worthless without Stingray, but, you know, Asian.

One of my favorite parts of Grosse Point Blank was that Benny Urquidez shows up. The guy is a little tiny machine. Guy's about my size, and just a powerhouse. His professional fight record is amazing. Benny is the real deal.

Merantau just seems to be a weird choice for the list, unless it's just to try and tie in to The Raid. But if I was going to pick a fight for that movie, I would pick the elevator fight preceeding the live action ending of Shenmue

In pausing the video a few different times, the way the candles already start moving before he's anywhere near it, I call shenanigans.

Hey you better watch your mouth! Bruce Lee's corpse could still kick more ass than most people alive today.

Bruce Lee and God once had a friendly sparring session. The loser had to sit up in the clouds and listen to everyone's problems.

The 36th Chamber of Shaolin belongs on this list, specifically the scene where he uses the 3-pronged staff in combat for the first time. Awesome scene, awesome movie.

Also, this list could have been 90% Bruce Lee, but I guess it's good for a little variety.

Jackie Chan bumps the table when he ducks. I call blindness, ref.

The list DOES need more Gordon Liu...

DeathByGeekSquad: Too much Jackie Chan.

Really? Have you watched some of the outtake reels? Have you seen the pure hell the man puts his body through? Especially when you consider he did some of his best, most punishing stunt-work after he turned 40. Jesus, the man is Evel Knievel without a motorcycle for all of his injuries.

Sorry, dude... Jackie Chan has earned every bit of acclaim the hard way.

Well, that added a hell of a lot to my Netflix instant queue and Amazon wishlist. Good find.
