I recall seeing Powaqqatsi as Glass and the symphony played the score to it live in a primitive form of HDTV back in 1980-something.

I don't mind the fact that I Phillip Glass is revered and thought of as a genius.
I DO mind that his fans feel the need to tell me I'm an idiot for not liking his music, and insist on playing it at high volumes when I'm in the vicinity. Give it up guys - I don't make you listen to Dylan, don't make me listen to Glass. Enjoy it all you want, just please leave me out of it.

In high school I found one of my brother's old cassette tapes of Einstein on the Beach and started listening to it. I remember just laying in bed and losing sense of time, which is really the point isn't it? Then my dad came bursting in and bellowed "Why can't you listen to rock or rap like a teenager!?"
That's when I found out that the man hates PG with a passion and can't stand his music. What with my older brother and sister having listened to and enjoyed him in the 70s, it apparently was considered rebellion to listen to Phillip Glass in our household.
/I listened to a ton of his stuff during a Robert Wilson kick when I had to design and curate an imaginary show for a thesis project

Compared to four hundred thousand of different notes everyone else does, it's minimalist. European music has always been harmony dominant (unlike many African/Asian types) and minimalism simplified the harmonic part greatly compared to likes of Beethoven and Stravinsky. And in its place to give the music interest, rhythm played a larger role.

that's basically what Carolla said on a later podcast. "was it me, or was he (ira) a little.....dick-y, about the 'most downloaded' title?"
Ace also took a poke at him, about how he wasn't good "in the moment". wondered how much of his show was not scripted per se, but just said he wasn't the quickest guy on his feet.

I saw the Met Opera broadcast of Satyagraha in November, and I have to say it was the deepest aesthetic experience of my life. The theatrical realization was as powerful as the music, and it was done with humble materials: newspapers, wicker baskets, corrugated tin, and scotch tape.

I remember in my 20th century music history class, the professor had listed part of Satyagraha as required listening. She said we only needed to listen to a few minutes, thank goodness.
The Glassworks album, on the other hand, is on my iPod.

Gotta disagree with your police work there, Lou. Both approaches could be considered minimalist. Glass, Reich, and Riley are minimalists in the sense of 'minimal materials to achieve maximum results'. Cage and his ilk are defining art by the most minimal differences from not-art.
I love Reich but it took me a longer time to get onboard with Glass. A lot of it is probably his very annoying electric piano timbre in the earlier recordings. Once I heard the 3rd symphony, however, I was all in.
/Then you get Lamont Young playing a perfect fifth for 5 years. Now

Why the hate, dude? Adams maybe is a bit too post-romantic derivitive, etc., but he doesn't deserve to be denigrated as a composer. Reich I will defend to the grave. The astounding thing about the last 100 years is that ALL of these guys came up with radically differing ideas about what musical composition is, and produced pieces that are intellectually and aesthetically stimulating.
