Alcohol-addicted babies can begin withdrawals within 12 hours

That's why a good parent opens up a tab at the bar.

I fostered an infant that was being breastfed by a woman doing cocaine.

The first night was miserable. Baby was up crying until 4am. After that, no problems. The mother blamed the crankiness of the child on 'colic' and had the child put on a special formula, which it didn't need (and which the mom apparently didn't buy anyway). It was the coke withdrawals, not 'colic'. We didn't notice any permanent effects, and the kid hit all pertinent milestones up until the child was permanently placed with a relative.

Babies are just scary.

Yes, we would not want to deprive a baby of the wondrous life of being raised by a drug addict. Sometimes death is just better... sadly.

My SIL is doing a peds rotation in Greenville, SC and told me that fully half the babies in the nursery were born addicted to drugs, usually meth or Oxy, and that the hospital was building a new nursery specifically to treat the huge number of addicted infants.

What. The. fark.

Have one kid that tested positive for 4 tightly controlled substances at birth, as well caffeine and nicotine. Other than teenage assholism, doing ok.

Had to take the DARE class at school, and the instructor asked if anyone wanted to talk about their experiences. As if the kids are going to confess to a person wearing a uniform. Little smart ass that lives at my house, raises hand and announces, "I'm an addict. What cha want to know?"

Love that kid.

Nice recitation of what you have been told to bleat. It reminds me of the hysteria over "crack babies". Crack babies turned out to be fiction, but that fueled the fires and made stupid people crazy with fear...

Good luck.

Really, WOW! Are they starting a charity clinic for pregnant moms to slowly ween themselves off the drugs before the baby is born?
