There is a local craft brewer that has a Rauchbier out right now. Quite tasty. Came out in December.

It's actually nice, not a full on session beer, but very good for a bottle or two. The barmaid in my local pub that serves it, could benefit from a Dirndl though.

I've had a few smoked porters, and even a beer that incorporated bacon into the hopping process. It's not terrible but it's not anything I go out of my way to find, either.

I only enjoy things slathered in butter, wrapped in bacon, so I'm getting a kick out of this

I was just going to say this, though I have no problem with Stone. I wish I could remember which beer I had a few years back that tasted like licking an ashy log, but it was too much. I want to say it was from New Holland.

According to NYC residents, anything north of Riverdale is "upstate". I have no idea what they consider Rochester or Buffalo. Canadian, maybe.

I had this when I tended bar at The Graduate Bar at Brown University. It's way too smokey and kinda disgusting.

I think it tastes like someone made a decent stout and poured half a bottle of Liquid Smoke in it. There are good Rauch beers out there. This one makes me gag.

Came here to say this. I've had one of these (the pictured bottle) last summer. It tastes like somebody dumped half a bottle of Liquid Smoke in a good beer. Would have been decent if they toned it down by like 90%.

Yup. That's a tasty treat. First time I had it was at the Great American Beer Festival back in '89? You better believe it won a medal.

Those are western new York, my question is what do they consider the Adirondacks.

Rauchbiers can be damn good, if made correctly.

Best one I ever had was actually made by an American brewery, Ballast Point out of San Diego. They called it Abandon Ship, and I had it on tap at a great tap room in Asheville, NC.

There was also one made in Brazil (can't remember the name), that used German malts, that was also fantastic.

But if anyone ever has the chance to get their hands on the Abandon Ship (not sure if they make it seasonally, or at all anymore), it is an amazing experience.

Santa Claus brought me the two 1/2 pound recess cup for Christmas. It was glorious! I just finally was able to finish it off this weekend.
