FTA: In an accompanying memo to the Federal Election Commission, Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow Treasurer Shauna Polk noted that the super PAC raised had raised $1,023,121 as of Monday.

Then, Polk offered an unconventional statement.

"Stephen Colbert, President of ABTT, has asked that I quote him as saying, 'Yeah! How you like me now, F.E.C? I'm rolling seven digits deep! I got 99 problems but a non-connected independent-expenditure only committee ain't one!'" Polk wrote, adding, "I would like it noted for the record that I advised Mr. Colbert against including that quote."

Bwahahaha

I haven't laughed that hard in a long time.

This is unfair somehow. But, I'm just not sure. Can someone point out the attack line?

Making a mockery of the situation? Openly flaunting election rules? Being mean too early?

I'm drawing a blank.

I can't imagine giving money to a politician, much less to a comedian who isn't even running.

2012-01-31 09:46:02 AM
I actually thought the number would be higher.

2012-01-31 09:46:22 AM
But I don't mind him making a mockery of the process.

His platform is mocking those that are running. I can support that. Well, I haven't. But I could.

I love Colbert's exquisite mockery of our broken political process. It is a masterpiece of political performance art, and would (if they had scruples or a conscience) make all those who act it out with gravitas ashamed of what they are perpetrating.

2012-01-31 09:54:30 AM
I guess the economy is doing OK if people have enough extra money layng around to give to a joke PAC.

2012-01-31 09:56:57 AM
his jokes are more enlightening than most of what our news media puts out and that's really sad...

I can only hope his pile of free speech gets bigger and I can't wait to see him use it.

/the truth served up as a joke, is surprisingly powerful.
//we need more of this.

Yes it is thanks to Obama, Pelosi and to a less extent, Reid.

People in the top 5 or 10 % of the wealth bracket, that is. you are correct. that process has been going on since ronnie raygun got elected.

He needs to spend all his money for a commercial during the Super Bowl, telling everyone not to bother voting, because corporate cash has ruined elections. Better yet, write in Harold Balsagna for every office.

I was told it was doing alright by itself cause Obama wasn;t able to get anything done due to republican obstructionism.....well except for that extension of the Bush tax cuts....maybe thats the part thats turning our economy around?

I want Stephen Colbert to be elected President of the USians. As a Republican. That would be peachy-keen.

2012-01-31 10:16:40 AM
He'd be a better president than the other GOP clowns running for the nomination.

2012-01-31 10:16:50 AM
Super PACs should be banned. Corporatism sucks.

I don't do a lot of thinking myself, but I know in my gut when when something is right. And I know the Stephen Colbert Super PAC For A Better Tomorrow Tomorrow is working for my vision of America. So, I have been able to provide one ounce of Beluga caviar on the Comedy Central Blimp I know my money is being well used; for the children.

I love the show's spin on criticism of his Super PAC: how dare you claim his organization is a mockery of the law! An attack on one is an attack on all, and to say that his behavior is a joke is a claim that our entire campaign finance system is a joke.

Breitbart was mewling the other day about it not being fair that he's picking on Republicans. His reasoning was something along the lines of "Super-PACs are Jesus-approved, free market capitalist free speech until the Lamestream Drive-by media uses them to attack good, upstanding, moral Christian Republicans like Newt Gingrich. Then they become evil and just another tool being used in the vast and ever expanding conspiracy to oppress and destroy the Republican party and, thus, the free world". Or something like that. It's probably best if you don't think about it too much.

I'd prefer just a 15 second mashup of Gingrich and Romney at their worst

the confidence to let the Rs talk themselves out of power, while ripping their own party to shreds.

I thought the minority party always had more power then the majority due to the fillibuster.

Has something changed?

The night he signed the PAC over to Jon Stewart was actually compelling in that I don't think they were exaggerating just HOW ripe for corruption these Super PACs are. Yes, it was funny, but when you really thought about it, it was a bold criticism of allowing money to be thrown around like this to get around traditional campaign laws.

"The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report" are, most of the time, shows by, and for, intelligent people who are paying attention.

So, have Super PAC's been added to the LOPCATGOPATA?

I thought that as well, when he first started it. But, seeing what's done/doing with it, it's a masterful political move. Americans for a Better Tomorrow Tomorrow may be the single wisest political organization to make a donation to.

Every donation helps to make a mockery of current election law, and exposes just how farked up our system actually is. Once people figure out how stupid the system is, they'll demand that it be changed. I have a feeling that AFaBTT may wind up being one of the key turning points of political speech in America.

I love how the only thing he really, really takes seriously is showing how farking ridiculous some of these processes are.

serpent_sky; Yes, it was funny, but when you really thought about it, it was a bold criticism of allowing money to be thrown around like this to get around traditional campaign laws.

Especially with the lawyer sitting right there.

"Hey, this ain't collusion, is it? I mean, er, co-ordinating?"
"Not legally, no."
(Colbert and Stewart giggle and high-five)

Not that I'm aware of. We need to be careful though. It's not ALL Super PACs that are evil, just the liberal ones.

super PACs may also accept contributions directly from corporations, unions and special interests, as well as individuals.

Well, that really narrows it down. You hear that, aliens from outer space? You can't donate to super PACs!
