I don't think I'd get in a Piper that wasn't maintained well enough to start it's own engine.
I wonder if he made the mistake of trying to start it by pushing down. I think you're supposed to hand start props by pulling up, so your body is arcing backward from the prop.

It is sometimes necessary to hand prop an airplane. The starter could have a problem and propping a plane is really no different than push starting a car. I've done it a few times and it always made me nervous. It's never a good idea to attempt to do this alone. I always wanted another pilot in the cockpit to assist and made sure all wheels were chocked.

Actually you start with your leg thrown forward and arms extended fully. This gives you the leverage you need without your head pitching forward into the prop. The trick is to complete the maneuver standing straight up and immediately turned to the side, so you can step out of the way very quickly if needed.

No, you hand prop by pushing down in the same direction of rotation as the propeller. Where this idiot went wrong was that you're supposed to hold the prop at about an arms length; push down and away from the propeller as you follow through. Oh, and chock the goddamn gear. You know, so this kind of shiat doesn't happen.
And typically the only reason why you'd hand start is because the starter motor is blown, or unable to kick over the prop so the magnetos can light the spark plugs. So long as the engine starts you're actually in pretty good shape.

To save weight the battery is as small as possible. Get a battery that is a couple of years old and a cold morning and it isn't uncommon to find that the aircraft will not start on its own. Getting a jump start on some models is more of a PITA than just getting help to prop start it.
Always seen it done overhead pulling down myself. Although I've been shown how to do it and seen it done numerous time there is no way in h*ll you'll get me in front unless it was a dire emergency.

Not sure; my dad has an Aeronca that has to be hand started that way. He always pulled down on the propeller and never had any incidents like the one in TFA.

No, starting with the leg forward and swinging it back (as you follow through with the down stroke of the prop (open palms flat against the blade, not gripped with the fingers curled around the edge)) creates a natural momentum AWAY front the prop arc. If you don't use this technique, the head will fall forward with predictable results.

Oh no. You never pull up on the prop; you push down on the side of the prop in which it turns (usually clockwise as you face it in a single engine). There's too much risk of that you'd tumble backward and put your legs into the prop path. Our forward balance is much finer than our backward balance. See my earlier post for the correct procedure.

have hand propped many airplanes, without any ill effect----you have to be extremely careful, and since a lot of small airplanes have an impulse magneto, it is very possible to barely pull the prop thru and have the engine start.--and look, no chocks on the airplane.
