On Monday, Ryanair said it was examining opportunities in Spain following the collapse of Spanair. "We certainly see it as an opportunity to expand our base," it said.

Nobody expects the Spanish Acquisition.

I've travelled a fair amount in Spain and I'm still not sure where the lisp is "correct" or not. It's common through the south, but seems to crop up in various other areas as well.

There were 4 Spanish airlines?

And in other news... Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead.

The planes in Spain fall mainly on the bankruptcy train.

Their airport Terminal is designed by Gaudi and built of sand. It collapses every time it rains or the tide comes in.

What Barcelona Airport looks like:

"The Spanish government is taking legal action and said Spanair could be fined 9m euros (£7.6m; $11.9m) over the collapse."

Beat that dead horse!

In case anyone is wondering what probably pushed them over the edge into bankruptcy (other than being one of four national airlines serving a smaller country like Spain) here is the video of the Spanair crash. (new window)

Bravo subby, nice one.

How about a bankrupt Mexican budget airline (new window)? Took the aged parents who were out here on holiday for a few days in Miexico city and flew Aviacsa for the grins, they were just starting to go international to Texas. Friendly people, elderly aircraft but well maintained, and decent food.

Not really. Crashes happen, but what doomed Spanair was the horrible economy of Spain, banking troubles, high unemployment, budget issues, low cost competition

That is too bad. I took SpanAir in the 90s when they offered $300 flights from DC. Nice airline, fun city, great country.
