FTA: "Do you groan every time you see those mundane stickers on the back of a car's window representing a family, often using cute stick figures? "

Yes, I do, and this Star Wars horseshiat is even worse.

Jango Fett? Why not Boba? I also think they may have wasted money on some of those, nobody will ever choose to be a desert storm trooper if they can be symbolized by a Darth character.

I still don't get why people choose to have these family stickers

I am still looking for someone to market that pile of cash sticker. Heck, I would do it myself if I wanted to spend the time to do it.

Though in my case it would be a guy and a chick on a stripper pole

I'm with you. Normally, I think people use them just to justify their stupid gas-guzzling SUV that they're using to commute to work, but I give the geeky ones a pass. I've seen zombie ones & classic monster ones (Frankenstein, Bride, Mummy, etc.), and these Star Wars stickers. I'd like to see X-Men or Justice League ones.

I dont mind the stickers so much. Some are actually funny (like these and the Daleks). What really worries me is when they put their family member's names on each one. So they drive around telling every psycho and pedo what their kid's names are, and sometimes the pet's names. Seems like an easy way for a predator to get some info on how to kidnap your kid.

/dont look at me like that!
//who's that knocking at the door?...

Ugh...I bet you don't use your credit card online & still use checks at the grocery store. Seriously, just how many psychos do you think are roaming the countryside? And most pedos prey on kids they already know.

People have such a high opinion of their kids. Almost no one wants to fark your kids. Get over yourselves.

The vast majority of kidnappings occur from within the family. These stats are from an old report (2002), but I doubt much has changed since then.

797,500 children (younger than 18) were reported missing in a one-year period of time studied
203,900 children were the victims of family abductions.
58,200 children were the victims of non-family abductions.
115 children were the victims of "stereotypical" kidnapping. (These crimes involve someone the child does not know or someone of slight acquaintance, who holds the child overnight, transports the child 50 miles or more, kills the child, demands ransom, or intends to keep the child permanently.)

So what about the other 530,000? Did they just "go to billy's for the weekend"

hoho19 : So what about the other 530,000? Did they just "go to billy's for the weekend"

The report is categorizing missing children reports. There are tons of missing children reports that are filed, where there are no abductions (and in a lot of cases, the kids aren't really 'missing' at all).

IE

Billy stops at a friends house for a few hours instead of coming straight home from school.

Husband goes to pick up kid, but forgets that the aunt was picking them up that day to take them to a movie.

Kid pretends to run away from home (self abduction doesn't count as an abduction).

Kid actually runs away from home.

The kid is just missing (wandered out of the store and is now missing in the mall, wandered out of the yard and walked to the arcade, played hide and go seek, and took a nap under the house, etc)

... lots of these become fark headlines.

The first one - family abductions, those are distraught losers of custody battles. They're someone's father or grandfather or whatever who thinks the mom/dad/whatever shouldn't have the kid. Technically it's "kidnapping" because they're taken from their legal guardian and home, but they're taken by a family member they trust.

I don't see how the second set aren't "stereotypical" kidnappings. It ain't yer kid.

moothemagiccow: I don't see how the second set aren't "stereotypical" kidnappings. It ain't yer kid.

The 58,200 non-family abductions are people who are not family members, but know the family in some way shape or form. IE

The babysitter that you hire to look after your kid
The next door neighbor that has kids your kid plays with
The jr high math teacher
The little league coach
Your kids older brother's skeevy friend.

Basically, people who are not family members, but are also not complete strangers. A sticker with your kids name on a car won't make any difference to these folks because they already know the kids name.

The 115 are the stereotypical cases where a complete stranger randomly abducts a kid (you know, the free candy child abduction van).
