Drilling for little puddles of oil is stupid and not worth the environmental risk. It won't help the economy or employ many people or reduce our dependence on foreign oil. All it will do is make a few rich people richer.

Maybe what's holding Alaska back is being a bunch of snowbound, backwoods retards that vote for losers like Sarah Palin?

Note to journalist, it's ANWR not AWNR. They got it right the first time then proceeded to mess it up for the rest of the article.

/considering its a Mother Nature Network article, the writer was probably stoned

You are part of this country whether you brain damaged hicks like it or not. Your geographic location means farkall.

Why is it always Republicans/Conservatives who claim to be the most patriotic lovers of America and yet whenever something happens that they don't like they are the first to go full retard and want to burn it down.

Yeah, 2 BILLION barrels of oil and 12 TRILLION cubic feet of natural gas won't help reduce our dependency on foreign oil and gas at all. Those are USGS figures.

States' Rights™ trumps everything.

Republicans want all the benefits of living in the United States (Strong military, other states that pay more in taxes than they take in so red states can leech) without the responsibilities and limitations (Taxes (on *them*), the federal government telling them they can't shiat all over poor people/minorities/the environment/non-Christians).

Look how cute, parasites at or near the top of every measure of Federal spending per capita are complaining about their burden.

Just like every other Red State.

7.3 Billion barrels a year.
So, this amazingly vast reserve is only worth 3 to 4 months?

If those liberal weenie-brained scientists had done their jobs we'd be driving cars that got a thousand miles to the gallon so we'd only use like 3 gallons a year as a nation so that 2 billion barrels would last until forever, but no, they're busy killing babies and marrying their gay lovers so in order to keep America running we need that oil and gas!

Dear Alaskan senators:
ANWAR is federally controller land. It's been that way for decades. Central Park isn't federally controlled. No one is proposing taking away land from Alaska. This is a poor example.

And you're stupid and you make your ideas look stupid.

I'm actually pro-drilling in ANWAR, it's just a bloody shame that most of the proponents of it are ignorant douchebags.

I don't see how central park can be classified as a "Wilderness", since it's completely man-made (the original flora/habitat of manhattan island being closer to sparse scrub-land).

We should sell Alaska to the Chinese; pay off our national debt and everyone gets a check for $100,000.

Excellent. Just divert the funds from Alaska to Manhattan that would be the equivalent by population. Ron Paul sez you don't even need to get the Federales involved -- just a little money between friends.

No, it actually won't - because this is the wrong focus.

Considering we're already net exporters of oil, the focus is away from being reliant on oil in any fashion and moving to electric based cars. This is only the beginning right now, and cities are already slowly rolling out charging stations + more and more cars are slowly being rolled out that are partially or entirely battery powered. Gov't has set some hard deadlines on when that stuff needs to be mainstream, and they're not far off - thus you've seen manufacturers start to create more hybrids, more cars etc. Granted, battery only is worthless for long drives but that's it's own separate issue.

Oh, you!! Throwing around number without context!!

You know, for most people, a 2000 calorie meal is a huge, gut busting feast. For you, it's probably a light snack. Now apply that to the virtual petrofatass of the U.S.A.

True the amount of oil in ANWR is not much relative to our consumption and for those of us that don't live there it is meaningless. But if the people in Alaska think drilling there is a good idea then maybe some kind of compromise should be met to allow it.

How will drilling that oil and gas and selling it to the Chinese help our energy problems? Or are you under the impression that our good, patriotic, "American" oil companies plan to do this for the nation's benefit? And while those numbers may sound big to you - they aren't - even if they recovered anything like they are projecting, which they won't.
Nobody wants this but oil companies and exceedingly naive members of the public.

Right. And the people who live around Yosemite should be allowed to take a vote and sell it to Disney to make a theme park out of. Right.
After all, THEY live there, and we don't!

I'm against drilling there for the time being. I'm more of the mindset of keeping it as a naturally contained strategic oil reserve for emergencies. Burn the oil exported by the rest of the world, until we can figure out a better alternative.

And once we are all driving in electric cars, we will just be dependent on someone else for the rare earth stuff needed to make all of those batteries, and to dispose of them, and for whatever powers our power plants to handle all that increased demand.

Not that electric\hybrid is a bad thing, but it is just a stop gap, and it is debatable if we need that stop gap right now, or it will cover us until something better comes along, which is why it is silly to put all of your eggs in that basket right now.

no, it'd be more like if they allowed all the spilled oil from atv snow mobile riding and 4x4ing to pollute the place for some profit... oh wait. that's different because in that case no residents actually get paid where in the case of ANWR revenue would be added to the permanent fund.

LOL. I always read the profiles of folks who respond to my musings. (Mine is non-existent because nobody would believe it.) You will be pleased to know I am married to the reincarnation of Annie Oakley. Could we instead sell Texas to the Mexican cartels? But then, maybe China would buy Alaska. After all, they would get a ton of natural resources which they need, land to send their excess peoples to, and it would certainly help in their encirclement of Russia.

ComicBookGuy: How much federal money does Alaska get for ever dollar it sends to Washington, again?

I think because no one but the tough would want to live there everyone who does is given a yearly stipend.

The concept is for the U.S. to keep control of Alaska we need to live/occupy it, so Russia or whoever does not get any ideas and so we are there to keep some resemblance of order.

So really they are doing us a favor.

farkingatwork: Considering we're already net exporters of oil,

Subtle but perhaps important clarification - the U.S. is a net exporter of refined petroleum fuels, not crude oil. We have more, and far more sophisticated, refineries than most of the world. We still consume more oil products than we produce domestically.
