Meh, sounds like he was being a dick. While being a dick to an officer of the law is not a crime, it is quite stupid.

Is a park ranger like a real cop? Not that a real cop should have the right to do that either but a park ranger sounds like a mall security guard who just happens to know about how to prevent forest fires.

Some are. Law enforcement rangers have police powers and enforce national laws as well as park regulations.

Yes, they are.

And, god help someone if they try to cross a game warden. Those guys have pretty much unlimited power and discretion under the law. Search warrant?? They don't need no stinking search warrant.

I absolutely HATE people who walk their dogs off-leash outside of designated off-leash areas.

My dog doesn't like other dogs. I know this. I keep her on leash. People whose dogs are off-leash in on-leash areas generally have very little control over their dogs.

Their dogs run up to my dog, fight ensues.

I make it a point to walk my dog very late at night in areas that are low dog traffic for this specific reason.

In NYS, they're regular New York State police.
Hard asses who cut you no slack, and have an attitude because they aren't out there shooting at real criminals.
They will look for anything they can arrest you on, just so they can say they made an arrest.

That must just be New York.

In other areas, the game wardens and park rangers are just people who really love being outside and want to help keep the outdoor scene healthy and viable.

They're sticklers for the hunting regulations/licensing and for littering, but they have good reason.

That and this is a great way to make sure a cop farks up your day:

The dog-walker was "defiant," Barlett said, daring the ranger as he began walking away, "Are you going to arrest me?"

You should always ask if you're being lawfully detained before trying to walk away. If you are being lawfully detained, and try walking away, and get your ass tased, well, the cop is going to get a paid vacation and you'll get nothing.

cries of foul play among the close-knit dog-walking community in Montara.

*snort* I can just see them all hanging out and talking about their dogs.

Sounds like this is a newly-acquired piece of national park, that used to not be national park. Sorry, dude, but they're very strict about dogs in national parks. She shouldn't have tased you, but that's how it is.

GGNRA took control of the Rancho Corral property in December, and some dog advocates have accused the agency of trying to limit where they can take their canines off-leash.

Or maybe a bunch of them were walking their dogs off-leash to "protest."

part of the problem up there is dogs crapping all over and no one cleaning it up.

and dog park/area people are weirdos that talk about their dogs...and other dogs...endlessly.

So much this. My house is on a corner lot and the crocks with dogs like to congregate at the corner at 6:30 AM to yammer loudly about their dogs. Why can't claymores be legal.

Two dog threads in a row where the dog owner was wrong, but the subby thought he'd get the opposite reaction. Owning a dog doesn't give you free reign to act like a dick.

One time, I was hiking along a popular trail, almost back to the car, and saw an unleashed dog walking up the trail towards me. I looked along the trail to find the inconsiderate person who let their dog run loose in a "no dogs" area but there wasn't a soul in sight. Looked back at the dog and it was a mountain lion. It stopped to give me a once-over then trotted off into the brush. I considered my options and realized, if it was going to attack me, it didn't really matter which way I went so I continued on my way back to the car. Obviously, I didn't get eaten.

I have very little sympathy for people who let their dogs run around. I have been attacked(one time where my dog was actually injured) walking my dogs more than once.

My springer spaniel is amazing off leash. It's a sight to behold.

2012-01-31 04:45:00 AM
The man collapsed on the ground, and the ranger began shouting at him to turn over face down so she could handcuff him. It took "several" minutes before he could move, Barlett said.

That tells me all I need to know.

I've been wanting to go back where I used to work to catch the annoying woman with her annoying prince charles spaniel who she lets off leash to run through the landscaping every day.

just so I can cut my guy loose after it, because I know he'd think its a game. And she'd crap her pants

Also, I've got dogs, I get it. But if I get caught letting them off leash in a restricted area, I quickly leash 'em up and we trot off. Why'd the guy need to pitch a fit? There's no way to know from the article if the owner's belligerence reached a "code tazer" level, is there? Sympathetic quotes from his doggy facebook friends notwithstanding.

CSB time: I was once, when living in Oporto, Portugal walking back to my house from a night out. And this city is duly cleaned by street cleaners on such days at a specific hour. I caught them on my way with their orange vests and working their machines. And, a short while after passing them, I saw a dog. And then some more. And then all of these dogs - house dogs, mind you, all kinds and sizes, gathered to form this huge herd of dogs that followed the cleaners. I had to pass through them or rather, they chose to walk by me. It was night and they were potentially ferocious animals numbering in the tens and I had to realize that they could easily take me if they had wanted to. But of course they were house dogs really, and they just sort of brushed against my legs uninterestedly every now and then as the herd passed me. And then they were gone.

Bragging about cutting your pitbull loose on someone's annoying dog kind of indicates you're one of those problem owners that gives them a bad rap, FYI

good Cool Stories Bro, bros.

is it legal to carry a rifle with you when you go walking in these types of areas? Seems like a good idea in these brushes with clawed fanged wildlife

I wish that ranger could walk down my street when the dickhead neighbor lets his dogs go outside without a leash. Two Labs, one black and one tan, and he literally doesn't care where they crap. Animal control officers have shown up at his house and even fined him for not keeping them on a leash, it doesn't help. He's even gotten into a shouting match with another neighbor when his dogs attacked the other guy's dogs (on a leash).

/he needs a good tasering

I've got a neighbor who has two labs that occasionally get out and start barreling through the neighborhood. I love Labs, and had one for 11 years....but if the damn dogs repeatedly get out of the yard, and don't come when you call them, there's an owner training issue.

I got ticketed in by a NPS ranger for having my dog off-leash. It was on a uncrowded trail, and I let the dog jump into the pond. Ranger stopped me, I called the dog, put her back on the leash, and while I thought it would have been better just to give me a warning, I took the ticket and went on my way. They carry guns, I don't. Don't be a dick to someone who can shoot you. (Don't be a dick in general, but especially to those with guns or tasters).

Tommyymmot is on the money. If you are doing something on NY (State) Park property that could possibly result in a fine or arrest they will pursue you. Fishing in a row boat on a lake? Paddle it in, let's see that permit/license. Using the ball field for more than just hitting dingers with two friends? Best have your name on the sheet. Yes, Ranger Smith is frustrated, and more than a little anal.

I used to like to ride my horse in the local HORSE park but too many times some idiot would be letting their "well-behaved" mutt run lose and when they saw the horses they made a bee-line for them. This in turn spooked the horses and some horses are more skittish than others so it was always an adventure to find out how the horses were going to react. I've been dumped on my ass, dumped on my head and taken for a wild, full speed ride through the park. I hate hate hate unleashed dogs, and I'm a dog person!
