(Philly Now) Asinine The Pennsylvania house resolution declaring 2012 to be "The Year of the Bible" has no chance of passing. Just kidding, it already passed unanimously   (blogs.philadelphiaweekly.com) divider line 169

i've had a lively discussion of this on my facebook page. I asked my friends if they thought the evangelicals in this state would be ok with the legislature passing a similar resolution honoring the Koran or the Torah or the Wiccan Rede.

suffice to say the responses have not been helpful, ranging from changing the subject to accusations of 'hating christians'. personally I don't get that last one - my view is that if the legislature honors the bible then they should honor the religious books of other faiths as well. All or nothing is my point, respect every religious viewpoint equally or get the hell out of the building.

Well, 2012 is certainly shaping up to be The Year of the Idiot. :-/

You're in good company:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion ~U.S. Consituition, Amendment 1. Proposed 9/25/1789, Ratified 12/15/1791.

Will February be the month where Hebrews rip fetuses from the stomachs of their enemies? It'd be a nice tie in with Valentine.

The point i'm trying to get across to people is that the GOP in this state would NEVER pass a similar resolution honoring the Koran or anything OTHER than the christian bible. they'd fight tooth and claw to prevent it from happening. I attempted to illustrate this point when one friend said 'well this resolution doesn't mean anything, it's a wash'. My counterpoint was that if it wasn't important, then the GOP evangelicals shouldn't oppose something honoring the Koran. that's when a lot of subject changing digressions and accusations of 'hating christianity' started cropping up.

*sigh*

Well, that's what happens when you question or criticize why some fundamentalists feel Christianity should be made into law. They want a theocracy and if you question it, you're accused of "being anti-Christian".

Hell, I'm plenty religious. I'm not anti-Christian either. I just don't want this to be a Christian nation. The Founding Fathers didn't intend it to be, and I want it to stay that way. If they'd wanted it to be a Christian nation, it'd be in the Constitution. It is not.

Or, you know, keep religion out of state/govt affairs because they have absolutely nothing to do with each other? The government is supposed to represent their constituents. I'm pretty sure the state isn't entirely made up of people who believe in imaginary friends only.

And, next year, it will be "The Year of the Bible," and the year after that, and the year after that, and...

Eventually, people will just see this nonsense and laugh at it.

ideally I'd prefer to keep religious views entirely out of the legislature...but this is the state of Rick Santorum. suffice to say there are enclaves of christian cultists all over the midstate. so religious belief (specifically christainity) is going to crop up from time to time and mix it up with government.

that's why I think if the state legislature should honor all religious documents equally and be vocal in saying so. the bible, the koran, the torah, wicca, shinto...whatever religious views you got going on, the legislature just opened the door to getting your views endorsed by the state congress of Pennsylvania.

Right - kind of my point, too. Making it the Year of the Bible, but not being willing to honor other texts people consider holy is tantamount to establishing a state religion, on a certain level. But alot of people - especially evangelicals - don't like it when people point that out and also point out that Christianity is not the State Religion. They see it as an attack on Christianity, for reasons passing understanding.

*sigh* indeed.

I agree with the sentiment, as much of a militant atheist as I am, but realistically there's no way any other faith is going to get equal time. The best option would be to protest the idea in its entirety and continue the push for separation.

The resolution, primarily sponsored by state Rep. Rick Saccone, of Allegheny and Washington Counties, is about a page long and according to some bloggers, is probably a violation of Church and State.

The United States in Congress assembled highly approve the pious and laudable undertaking of Mr. Aitken, as subservient to the interest of religion, as well as an instance of the progress of arts in this country, and being satisfied from the above report of his care and accuracy in the execution of the work, they recommend this edition of the Bible to the inhabitants of the United States, and hereby authorize him to publish this recommendation in the manner he shall think proper. ~ Congressional Resolution, September 10, 1782

Holy Crap! You're ALIVE!
Missed ya buddy.

Fisher Ames is wrong. The place for the bible is in a Religion class or a Mythology class. If you want your kid to learn about the bible, Sunday School is the perfect place for that sort of thing.

The First amendment wasn't ratified til 1791, thus making the resolution illegal.

Please try again.

The Wicked Bible, one would hope.

The name is derived from the compositors' mistake: in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:14) the word not in the sentence "Thou shalt not commit adultery" was omitted, thus changing the sentence into "Thou shalt commit adultery". This blunder was spread in a number of copies.

Good for them. No, not because I am religious, but because I don't give a shiat. Here are some of the other official observances currently happening:

-Intimate Apparel Week
-National Cowboy Poetry Week
-International Hoof Care Week

Oh, and don't forget today was "Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day" as well as "Insane Answering Machine Message Day."

If they want their holy book to be lumped in with that silliness, have at it.
