Who the fark drives around with $8,000 in cash these days?

I would return all $7000

I would've asked myself: what would Jesus do?

Really, these guys idiots. Keep the damn money, no one carries that amount of cash for legitimate reasons. Don't feel bad that some thief or drug dealers doesn't get his hooker cash.

FTFA: "The owner of the briefcase did not want his name released."

Yeah. No shiat. Either because he didn't want his family or friends to know what a dumbass he was or, more importantly, the mob guys he works for.

They had this guy on the local morning show this morning. He said he was initially going to keep it, but then realized it could be related to drug money or worse.

8K in a briefcase...Hmm. I imagine the fellow also thought, after all his "soul searching," "someone will track it down and kill me." Turning it in was best for him. That the owner didn't want his name in print says a lot. Dude's prolly in lots of trouble over this.

And it's FLORIDA!

No. The answer is C: invest the money in the fish and wine industry, make $80,000, return 10%, wipe hands on pants.

In that case the smart thing to do would be to leave it alone. I'm sure some thugs would not be so happy if you turned their hard earned money into the cops.

My parents have paid straight cash for every car they've bought in the last 20 years. "Here's 35k, thanks for the keys, I'll call you if we need maint work".

That'd be about the best type to keep, depending on whether a bunch of people saw you pick it up.

Maybe he just sold a car and the person paid in cash.
Maybe he's buying a car and the person only accepted cash.

I just withdrew $6000 from my savings account a week ago and went to Home depot to place an order for cabinets for my new kitchen remodel.

I can think of hundreds of other "legitimate reasons" for having that kind of money on you.

I bought a brand new car with a check once. It would have been really fun to bust out a briefcase full of cash, but I would have had to carry around $30k.... The look on salesman's face when he sat me down to talk about financing and I said "How about I just write you a check?" was pretty cool though.

My CSB:

I was like 8 and found a $50 bill in the grocery store. Didn't say anything, just pocketed it. On the way out, saw an elderly lady crying her eyes out to the manager that she had dropped a $50, the last of her money for the week. Handed it right over, she immediately got change and gave me $5 for doing that. Felt pretty damn good about myself for a few days.

I remember my dad (a lawyer) finally got this one cantankerous old cheapskate rancher guy to pay up for services rendered.

It was somewhere around 6k, in cash. All 1928 and 1934 hundred dollar bills. The old coot had them in stashes around his property. Not because of historical value or anything, he just didn't trust banks and was a skinflint who stopped for every penny he saw on the street.

There are plenty of "normal" reasons to carry that much cash and that's before the weirdos like that rancher that are out there.

I would absolutely turn it into the police or just leave it alone. Rarely is that much in cash from legit means; I've seen "no country for old men", no way I'm getting involved. If it was legit, I'd feel bad that I may have just pocketed all of someone's cash. my conscience is way too guilty.

I would have changed it into a foreign currency, and then taken it to the cops. Nobody could claim it because they didn't lose foreign currency.
It would eventually be returned to me, after the cops took their cut.

If I ever find a lot of money on the ground, I'm going to keep it.

Period.

If they come to my front door looking for it, I'll give all half of it back, but seriously that's what it's going to take. Showing up at my house asking for their sack of money, and showing me their search warrant for said loot.

Until that happens, I have a US economy to save by stimulating it with cash, one bartab at a time.

The question you have to ask is 'Are the numbers traceable?' If so, then your ass would get busted, right quick.

maybe if they are buying low cost used automobiles. new car dealerships avoid taking cash deposit over a given amount for many reasons. you can have full purchase price in hand and still you have to go through a loan process to complete the transaction. suspicion of money laundering is not worth the legal hassle.

If the money is from a bank, possibly. If the money is uncirculated, sure.

From anybody else? BWAHAHA!! [let_me_laugh_even_harder.jpg]

Last month my dad found a wallet with $1200 cash outside a bicycle shop and enlisted the shop's help in tracking down the owner. The guy offered to pay him, but he declined, since last year someone found his wallet, containing $400, and got it back to him.

Pay it Forward, or something.

I bought my pickup a year ago for $7,000 all in cash. It just makes it easier, and people are more open to negotiating.

I learned awhile ago, at least in private dealings cash brings the price down. Bought a used motorcycle for my dad, I asked a reasonable but low offer for what the seller was asking, he wavered around for a few minutes, and I did not budge, he said he would have to think about it. I repeated my offer but said cash, and he was sold instantly, and we picked it up that day. It's an amazing incentive when buying used vehicles, and proves that some people can have a legit reason to carry that kind of money.

Of course he didn't want his name released. Carrying that kind of money is de facto illegal, thanks to the War on Civil Liberties Drugs.
