Well, duh, who else can you dump your project when it's time to leave for the bar on Friday?

Hey, the self-imposed isolation thing I do is primarily because you people are all diseased and refuse to stand still in the ammonia mist decontamination chamber necessary to get into my apartment.

I sit in an area with a group of people with whom I the only thing I have in common is that we sit in the same area and work for the same company. The reason I'm an introvert at work is because, honestly, I have little to say.

Some people (including Mrs. Love Zombie) think it's a bit weird that I'm a seriously introverted teacher. It's really like a stage role. When I'm in the classroom, I'm quite animated. When class is done, I'd FAR rather do all my communication via email.

People are exhausting to be around.

2012-01-30 10:21:15 PM
Good grief, I had 19/20 on the little quiz at the end. I'm feeling like it's a bit of a miracle that I ever leave the house.

Like some of the others already in this thread, I am an introvert who works well with others. I just prefer not to socialize in large groups afterwards. I also try to keep socializing with co-workers at a minimum. I don't mind extroverts at all as long as they do their job and don't get offended when I don't want to go out for drinks later.

Totally with you there, work-related or otherwise. Dinner w/10 people this weekend and I felt like I'd gone through the wringer by the end of it.

Yes, they are. I can be sociable for several hours, then I am done with people.

No kidding. Keeping the masking field on all the time, always having to remember not to call things "Earth" this and "Hyoo-mon" that, not being able to feed even though you are surrounded by all that sweet, sweet, sentient protein...

Yeah, it's extroverts that are a farking pain in the ass.

Why? Because they can't keep their opinions to themselves, that's why. Talktalktalktalktalktalktalktalk...

Class A extroverts are impossible to work with, because they don't WORK...only socialize.

Extroverts wildly overestimate their people skills while introverts who have to literally learn their people skills like a foreign language when in adulthood, are usually the best people you meet.

DNRTFA

Just came to say, I was turned down for a call center job doing tech support for a cable company, solely because I scored as an introvert on that stupid farking test they give everyone.

Questions like "I feel that no matter what, my parents really loved me"
and it asked me 17 different goddamn ways if I wanted to try skydiving.

I called the head lady, the one that had almost climbed out of her own vagina to recruit me, and laughed at her company. She agreed but wouldn't break the rule.
I'm sure the laughing at her didn't help my cause, but at that point I couldn't reapply for another 6 months and knew I would have something else by then.

I am a total extrovert... when I'm extremely drunk. Even then, I know I don't give two shiats about who people are, or what they're doing, because I know no one will remember when they're sober. It's a good thing.

What's it say on the side? Do you take milk or sugar? I can go get you some milk. I think we ran out in the kitchen, but it's such a nice day, I think I'll go take a walk to the store and pick some up.

What a great day! Skateboarding, coffee, just watercooler talk amongst us guys, you know? Pretty cool. Hey, what are you doing after work?

Though I probably qualify as an introvert, this fairly recent "introverts are special delicate snowflakes and need care and handling" pop-psychology opinion piece trend is already getting annoying since most come across as a preachy demand to be catered to as some amazing creature.

Yes, different personality types have strengths and weaknesses, and it's smart to play to them. Now get the fark over yourself and stop expecting the world to behave according to your every whim.

I'm an introvert because the rest of my coworkers are farking nuts. One of them is a bipolar alcoholic that will biatch and complain to the management about anything that is said to her (and she can't read facial expressions or tone of voice worth a damn, so even jokes turn into a huge deal), one part of the management is trying to be buddy buddy with everyone, and the other is trying to make sure we respect her authority by chewing us out for anything and everything on a constant basis (except her husband, because god forbid he ever do his job farking right).

So yeah, I'd rather be that one that is isolated than be mixed in with the crazy.

/actively looking for another job
//this one is only worth showing up to the madhouse for because I still like to live in an apartment instead of a van down by the river

I'm an introvert, but many people think I'm an extrovert because I talk when I'm nervous or feel awkward. It's like a curse. I'll say something because I feel awkward around people at work/among friends of friends if I sit silently, but people always seem to take that as a queue to "open up" and talk forever, all while I'm trying to find a way to escape without being seeming rude.

That would explain why I've never had to work with some poor aspie bastard with tics and outright contempt for anyone interrupting his oh so deep thoughts until he finds the two of you have the same interest in something and now you're his best friend and just like him and never mind about work or getting the project in on time, how do you feel about Janeway and Uhura in the context of the progression of feminizm and doesn't the fact that Janeway has authority automatically make her more unlikable...

Oh wait. Bosses totally hire people who can't work with others. Often and with great enthusiasm.

I'm a big time introvert but many people don't realize it because when I'm nervous I smile REALLY BIG and look people in the eyes when I'm talking to them. They mistake that for being relaxed and enjoying the conversation when in truth I may be on the verge of hyperventilating.

It's a defense mechanism. I have a really nice smile and it puts people at ease. When others are at ease, I'm more at ease.

Oooh! Is this the thread where we confuse introverts for people with anxiety and personality issues?
The idea that being introverted is bad is something that is very ingrained in our culture and causes a lot of people to act against their own nature. It's sad to see people not be comfortable with who they are or treated negatively because they are.

2012-01-31 01:13:17 AM
Pointless article is pointless. I wonder if that book is more of the same.

There's actually a physiological difference between the ways introverts and extroverts experience social interactions. The brain of the introvert takes a longer pathway to respond to stimuli (going through some of the spots where memories and stuff are stored) while the extrovert brain gets right to the response. For an introvert, busy situations where they're expected to be right on top of the game and respond to things right away are physically more exhausting, and they require downtime afterward to recoop. Extroverts, on the other hand, feel energized by such experiences and not so drained afterwards.

Unlikely subby? I wonder how work places will be able to use workers who just do their work without having to go out for smoke breaks every 15 minutes and spending 2 hour lunches socializing. I really can't think of any use for workers who just want to get the job done.
