Blame Hofmann: Walker: Here in DC they'll even haul 12-year-old girls away in handcuffs for eating in the subway system. We don't put up with that sh*t.

That's ridiculous. Eating on the subway should be a fine -- there's just nothing that such activity would cause that would be so bad it would warrant putting someone in jail for the day. Really stupid.

But I do like how D.C. fines people for taking food and drink on the train. The Metro is pretty clean, and I imagine the fine helps.

Clean? It may not smell, but Metro is pretty farking far from "clean". If you want a clean mass transit system, check out Kazakhstan (new window)

/probably look a lot cleaner if they got rid of the carpets in the cars, cleaned the concrete in the underground stations and turned on the farking lights

Masso: Luckily all I've seen in NYC subway is people eating Chinese takeout and pizza... That and some racist paranoid black dudes threaten to beat me up for bumping into him while getting on the subway... right there in the very crowded train, twice in 2 months.

/Also, there's always this one homeless dude in Wall Street to Newark PATH Train in the evening asking for change. I see the guy everyweek with always the same catchphrase and the same monotone accent. If you ride PATH train back to NJ, chances are, you knew him.

"Good evening, everyone, if I can please have your attention."
"I knew you don't want to listen to me because I'm homeless."
"A penny can help, just a penny."
Whenever someone handed him some change - "Thank God"

Actually, that line is used by all panhandlers on the NYC subway. Females would add in they also have children (no less than 2).

Then some of them bring food & water in a big gym bag and state they are helping the hungry and homeless. They state if you're hungry they will offer you food, and they need donations to keep this program running. Pure BS obviously.

I have yet to find one of them brazen enough to panhandle on the bus.

moothemagiccow: What the hell are Da Bruddas? An Italian rap group?

I think they are a Hawai'ian Reggae band.

"Putting New York City Transit to shame, the seven stations of the Almaty [Kazakhstan] Metro are sparklingly clean and complete with stained glass windows, marble floors and intricate mosaics."

Oooh, SEVEN stations. That's almost as many stations as the MTA's three 'Shuttle' lines combined (and almost 3% of the total number of stations)!

Of course that system's clean; it's tiny and brand new, like the NYC Subway was the year that it opened. Let's check back in again in the year 2120 and see how it's held up.

jigger: I've seen mice at Metro Center before. They were cute though.

Come to think of it, that's where I've seen them too. But only in that one station, and only twice in the five years I've been using the Metro to commute.
