that viral video of that teen girl beating the sh*t outta that lady for calling her an "animal" for eating spaghetti on the subway was hillariously depressing... The teen girls response: "She be old, we be kids"

I'd be happier with some dude charcoal grilling a steak on the subway rather than like 99% of the crap that currently happens. They should burn those cars at the end of the day anyway.

/The panic spiral of what liquid your hand just touched can be overwhelming.

The mornings aren't too bad with people eating...just coffee drinkers more than anything else but I've seen the occasional breakfast sandwich and bagel chompers. You wouldn't think it's a big deal, but when millions of people are on the trains a day and of those people there are the slobs who drop crumbs all over the place (which is going to happen no matter how coordinated you are) the food gunk collects after time.

I'd be down with enforcing no eating on the subway at all, but cops don't give a fark. They'd rather just stand around and get tough in their random bag searches on people before getting on the subway. I've seen full blown altercations and cops just sort of hang around unless things really start to look bad for someone, they aren't going to start taking snackies away from people.

Release some cats? Or maybe hand out .22 pistols.

You apparently haven't seen the size of the rats on the NY subway system... you'd need to release some cougars. A .22 pistol would probably just anger them.

Banning is the answer to everything in NY. Can't they try something else? Like taxing it? Oh wait...they do that a lot too.

nevermind.

That's because they're all in the White House and the Capitol Building instead!

northguineahills: Sock Ruh Tease: Still no cure for smokers, dancers, flashers, sleepers, drinkers, molesters, and masturbaters on the NYC subway.

/and yes, I've seen them all

Me too. The worst was when a bum was crowning his bishop and the train stalled under the East River. Everyone was horrified. At least he kept it in his pants.

The worst I ever saw was:

1) a young stock broker / banker having the mother of all coke nosebleeds on the 6 train heading towards wall street one summer morning. It was all down the front of his shirt and tie, and actually pooling in a little puddle on the floor. The car was packed and the morning commuters were just stepping over / through / into as if it weren't there. That end of the car came to look like a charnel house by the time we got to Chambers St.

2) the bum passed out over the last three seats at the end of an express 7 train heading towards Shea, whose bladder totally let go. His pee first pooled under his seat and then was sloshing all over that end of the car. Unlike the blood, the urine chased folks further and further down the car as it advanced. I've never wanted to get to a Mets game as bad as that time.

Will banning eating result in lower fares -- or at least lessen the exponential rate at which fares have been increasing?

No?

Then fark you.

This is why we cannot have nice things.

STFU troll. You know how I know you've never ridden a bus or subway...or hell...picked up a hippy hitchiker?

Not so CSB, got off the bus in the "subway" tunnel in Seattle years ago heading home on an otherwise nice sunny unevenful commuter day...and some goddam street urchin chick and her boyfriend du jour decided to drop their pants and piss on the elevator with some idiot chant about facism or this and that. My ex, who wasn't at the time wanted to slit her throat. I shoulda let her, but I didn't have bail money.

TheWhaleShark: The cleanliness of the DC Metro has nothing to do with enforcement, and everything to do with New Yorkers not giving a fark about you telling them to do something.

I think the cleanliness of DC Metro has a lot to do with peer pressure. If food was sold in Metro stations like it is in Boston T stations, the DC Metro would not be as clean as the T. DC people are pigs. Pigs!

2012-01-30 05:36:28 PM
In the Boston area, there is no rule against eating on the MBTA ("the T") -- the MBTA earns money by renting space in some of the stations to food vendors. For instance, Government Center's Green Line level has both a Dunkin' Donuts and a little snack bar. There used to be a Burger King at Alewife station (last year, you may have seen a video of a drunk kid falling over the side of an escalator. That was there.)

Of course they'd never be able to ban food from the MBTA because then how would we be able to recognize all the tourists without their dainty little "Mike's Pastry" boxes?

Luckily all I've seen in NYC subway is people eating Chinese takeout and pizza... That and some racist paranoid black dudes threaten to beat me up for bumping into him while getting on the subway... right there in the very crowded train, twice in 2 months.

/Also, there's always this one homeless dude in Wall Street to Newark PATH Train in the evening asking for change. I see the guy everyweek with always the same catchphrase and the same monotone accent. If you ride PATH train back to NJ, chances are, you knew him.

"Good evening, everyone, if I can please have your attention."
"I knew you don't want to listen to me because I'm homeless."
"A penny can help, just a penny."
Whenever someone handed him some change - "Thank God"

Chicken bones. Sunflower seeds. How the hell do you just spit that out onto the floor? I only see those occasionally, but still...

What gets me most is when I'm on the train, an hour commute home, and someone walks on with a bag of something that smells delicious. That kills me! Are you trying to tell me you don't have pizza/chinese/mcd's or what-have-you in your neighborhood? Suddenly, I'm hungry with an hour plus prep time ahead of me before food.

Animals! People are animals!

Eating/drinking/chewing gum are all strictly prohibited on the subway in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. They stay immaculately clean as a result. There's also this really strange 'community enforcement' thing going on, but it seems to work well.

That's ridiculous. Eating on the subway should be a fine -- there's just nothing that such activity would cause that would be so bad it would warrant putting someone in jail for the day. Really stupid.

But I do like how D.C. fines people for taking food and drink on the train. The Metro is pretty clean, and I imagine the fine helps.

Yeah that's true about the pastries. The T doesn't seem to be that dirty to me. I suppose not as many folks eat food on it compared to NYC's subway, but I've never ridden NYC's system. DC's metro is noticeably cleaner than the T, but it doesn't seem to be a tremendous difference.

Face it. In big, crowded cities, all people are pigs.

Never ridden in a subway. The closest I've ever been to one is a TV. Did ride a Greyhound Bus from Florida to Georgia once and decided that if I had to do it again, I was going to be armed.

I have heard and read a lot of first hand experiences by folks who ride the subways and do recall when NYC apparently couldn't keep 'Da Brudda's' from spray painting every car on the system.

Funny. I've never read or heard about any complaints concerning the massive London subway.

2012-01-30 07:07:49 PM
True story -- The boyfriend and I were in New York recently visiting his family. When we got on the 1 at Houston St., there was a homeless dude (he appeared to be homeless, anyway) all the way in the back of the car jerking off into the corner near the doors. I look at my boyfriend and jab him in the ribs with my elbow, and when he turns to look at me, and ask what the fark I jabbed him in the ribs for, I said, "That dude in the back, is he whacking it? Looks like it to me." He looks, gets this smirk on his face, and then starts laughing. "Oh yeah, he's whacking it."

The train made probably five or six more stops after we got on, and that dude was still in the back, playing with his dick. People got on and off the train, totally oblivious to it, or they knew what he was doing but since it's NYC, didn't think it was a big deal.

Moral of the story? You can see dudes jerking off on the MTA! You don't even have to pay, either. Though I'm sure they'd probably appreciate a few bucks for their hard work.

I agree. Now, the Edmonton, Alberta subway? That one's got carpet so clean you can eat off it.

People are more civilized. There are food carts on some intercity trains but mostly people have grooming and behaviors imbedded by their parents appropriate to public behaviors. Also, the smaller metro trains are too cramped to eat on.

I call bullshiat on both your hyperbole and the MTA spokesman. 6+ years of riding the subway almost every day, and the number of times I've encountered a rat inside a train stands at exactly zero. Honestly, it's not even that common to see them on the platform...most of the time they confine themselves to the tracks (and even there, the biggest ones you see would be short work for a common house cat).

There are many reasons the NY subway has a rat issue, but people eating their bagels and coffee on the commute train isn't one of them.
