Look, it sucks the condo board were a bunch of asshats, but a 47 year old single man who loves his dog more than life itself has options, like say sell the effing condo and move. The tragedy here is the dog was adopted by a big p*ssy. When push came to shove, he killed his own dog because some other idiots told him to. Then compounded that by being too much of a coward to live the rest of his life learning from his mistakes.
The condo board can EABOD anyway, because condo boards are drunk on their own power and usually always full of themselves. But the issue I still see is why is this guy staying in his swanky address where they don't want mean scary dogs, or dogs of any kind apparently. He had 2 years to figure something out besides completely mess everything up.
// 51, owns dogs, lives in a condo. I'd sue the board if they started crap like this, then we'd look to sell.

My friend Rich (co-worker), who handed me this story this morning knew this guy very well as he lives a couple buildings down and is also a part-time actor.
He knew him and his dog for many years so he's pretty distraught.
So from Subby and Richard, EAT a real big bag of D*cks condo board.

That was my first thought. There's no way I'd put down my pets just so I could live some place. I wouldn't get rid of them either, but he could have brought his dog to a no-kill shelter. The one I used to volunteer at took in pitbulls regularly and they had a pretty good adoption rate.

I see nothing in the article that explains why he put his dog to sleep. FTFA:
"The board began its war against canines in 2010, enacting a series of oppressive rules.
Dogs were forbidden from riding in the main elevator or from being left alone in apartments for more than nine hours.
Breeds like Rocco - whom Santino adopted from a shelter - were outlawed, though
he was grandfathered in
."
How is any of that a war against dogs? Where I live doesn't allow dogs in the elevator either, due to them pissing and shiatting in it, and the owners not cleaning it up. Boo farking hoo, I have to take the stairs to walk my dog. And the fact that they mention they're banned from the main elevator would seem to apply there's still an elevator available to take dogs in.
Not leaving a dog locked up all day in a condo by itself seems like a humane rule. Hire a dog walker or take the dog to doggy day care. Don't leave a dog locked in a small condo all by itself all day every day.
And while pitbulls were banned, it specifically mentions the one in question was grandfathered in.
Really, that's a "war on dogs"? And there's not a single mention of anything bad the condo board did towards this man or his dog.
Sounds more like a case of someone battling depression (and losing) and his friends/family trying to scapegoat the condo board.

Condo associations suck, according to a coworker of mine that is president of his condo association.
He hates the job, but keeps at it. No one is ever pleased, but he'll be damned if some busy body comes in and tries to enact inane rules that do nothing but piss people off.

Mean, aggressive and potentially dangerous animals that can cause others harm should be banned from living in condos. This is only common sense. And in no case should they ever be allowed to serve on condo boards.

Friggin' condo boards.....I've had to deal the bullshiat involving mine, so I'm really getting a kick out of these responses.
Cool Story Bro:
My Dad had to deal with a similar situation when he was on the home owners' association board last year. A neighbor's pit bull came close to killing other dogs on a few occasions, and when she was told to get her dog out of the neighborhood, she decided to put it to sleep instead.
Being the biatch that she is, she blamed my Dad and flipped him off the next time she saw him.
Fortunately, she moved out this summer and his ex-husband now lives there.
/Dad thought that being on the board would be an amusing hobby since he's retired.
//Quickly learned what a mistake that was.

At our board, we've had a rule against large dogs for a while. We try to be accommodating.
When you buy a condo, you're supposed to be furnished a copy of the rules and stuff from the current owner, or go get them yourself. We've had lots of people who have bought units and not even bothered to read the rules, or ask if there were any. Dogs can cause common area damage. It's a condo building, not a suburban house. Think of the poor dog locked in a 8x12' concrete box for nine hours...

Being that it was a condo rather than apartment, he might have been upside down on it and not been able to move easily.
Still, killing yourself isn't a good alternative.

All of this.
My condo association has rules governing dog ownership, but they are all reasonable and they only exist at all because of the inevitable minority of dog owners who will allow their precious little poodle to defecate in the stairwell and not clean it up.

I don't get why everybody is blaming the condo board. They grandfathered the dog in because they had been living there prior to the "no dogs" rule and had nothing to do with the asshat neighbors bullying this man. OVER A farkING DOG.
Granted, the guy more than likely had underlying issues that led him to the sad conclusion to end himself after putting his dog down, but his neighbors are farking adults and should have acted the part. If I thought any of those people had a conscience, I would hope that the guilt of literally nagging a man to death hangs over their heads for the rest of their miserable lives.

Holy fark, that is a mix, maybe.
Lab/Pit is pretty common, I'll go with that.
I've long wondered how afraid people would be of a lab with his ears cropped and tail docked. I'd probably have everyone hating on me, especially since I think that ear cropping and tail docking is just an absolutely horrible practice.

Regarding that last part, many dog owners have no problem with crating during the day and/or night. No matter how good a dog owner's intentions, any large dog kept in an urban environment will not be as "free" as a feral dog. If you want to ban dogs because you don't like them or because they poop on stuff, fine. But IMHO you should refrain from invoking "humane-ness" because the arguments don't really hold wter.
