"Just wanting to see the acceptance letter again, she logged on at 6 p.m., and to her horror, saw a rejection letter instead," said Shaughnessy.

Don't worry, Mrs. Shaughnessy, your daughter can experiment with drugs, casual sex and lesbianism just as well at a state school.

Waiting for the follow-up story about one of the other kids that actually canceled all of their other applications like they were told to...

It's their fault for pretending they were Vassar material in the first place.

When you get a Welcome to Vassar message do they automatically send you blue jean coveralls and Indigo girls CDs or do you have to wait to buy them at the student book store?

can always go to one of the other Seven Sisters.

Why does this make me giggle like a school girl?

I really feel sorry for all those students who where, like, "YEAH!! I made it! Woohoo! Mom! Dad! Look: I got in! I gotta call my girlfriend and let her know. Then I'll call my ex and rub it in! I can't f*cking believe I made it into Vassar!"

What happens if one of the students canceled all of their other college applications on the basis of the incorrect letter only to find out they were rejected?

How many times does it need to be said that a liberal arts education is not job training?
American Liberal Arts education was designed to be life-enrichment for the ruling class gentry,
and, okay, perhaps job training for the clergy. The little snowflakes will be just fine.

I know a couple that I adore. I went to a friend's concert on the campus some years back and I was impressed with the general foxiness that was going on there. It was hard to leave.

Cheer up. Instead of going to Vassar and marrying a guy from Yale, you can always go to Radcliffe and marry a guy from Harvard.

My favorite is the people who go to Harvard Extension School and then write they have a degree from Harvard

I received an acceptance letter to my first choice school on April Fools Day. After opening it and reading it, I started examining everything in the envelope for any indication that one of my friends had sent it. I was fully aware that there was already some bogus college-related correspondence in circulation, some of it sent by me.

The Onanist:

You can bet there will be some lawsuits over this little glitch. You can't go back to the other institutions and say "I'm sorry I rescinded my application with you and I'd still like to be considered." Well, you can try. But South Harmon Institute of Technology might be the only ones to say "Oh, that's fine."

Look for websites like the Vassar site to add disclaimers that they are not responsible for problems resulting from errors and omissions, kind of like Wal-mart uses in their weekly ads.

/Wouldn't want my daughter attending Vassar.

The fact that the college couldn't pick up the phone to call 70+ people and let them know in nicer terms that they had a computer screw up tells you all you need to know about this college.

They sent an e-mail ? Sure no one likes to give bad news but come on, own your screw up.

I got a MA from a liberal arts department. Then again, it was in Geographical Information Sciences, and I do rather well designing algorithms for location based services.

This is a pretty major screw up. There are only a few big moments in a person's life, and getting accepted into university is a big one, especially at a pretty difficult time in one's life filled with uncertainty. It is something that kids have been spending months or even years working towards and anticipating. It isn't like some random prize that gets taken back.

If I got a job acceptance letter for a job I'd really been hoping for, I could definitely see celebrating, letting family know, maybe taking action like quitting my current job. That would be an incredibly big let-down to have that yanked away from you.

It certainly seems like potential lawsuits depending on the actions precipitated. I hope none of these kids commits suicide or something.

Because THIS (new window).

Stories like this run every once in a while. Many employers are looking for someone who has a well rounded education. Mine could care less about the content of my liberal arts university degree, but they wouldn't have interviewed me if I hadn't had it and they pay me pretty well.

I've heard of similar things happening with hiring systems. I know someone whose (then) boss received an automated, 'you have not submitted a letter of recommendation for Bob Smith. Please follow this link' email. It took him to an apology page saying that there was a technical problem. Of course the boss didn't know that his employee was looking elsewhere. Awkward.

Oh great a Liberal Arts bashing thread.

Guess what, not everyone needed a useless computer science degree knowing that the guy with 0 college education can run office support just as well and with less smug.

I guess some of you guys never get over the fact that you were always picked last and never got laid in high school or college - oh and also are jealous that us pathetic little LA majors tend to wind up running the businesses you work for.

It is job training...

Job training to be a substitute teacher. Or perhaps as a copy editor at an upstart ad agency at $8/hour. Or a springboard to grad school.
