Norv Turner: I heard a rumor about the 49ers possibly looking at him

Alex Smith finally gets a coach who can bring out his talents and they might go with a semi-crippled past-his-prime Manning? Seems like a bad idea to me.

Just a bitter fan that wants to tarnish his name a tad more (is that even possible?)

I've been saying this since the Polians were let go. I'm betting that they wouldn't do the dirty work of cutting Manning, and were fired over it. Same with that head coach. But to me it seems like the right decision. Move on and more power to Manning if he can find work elsewhere.

I had to check your profile to see whether you were from SD, DC, or Oakland.

No. No it isn't. We probably don't see eye-to-eye on a lot of things football-wise being that I'm a Raider fan, but the epic suckitude of Norv is common ground I would think.

Its gotten so bad that at a comedy show over the weekend the comdedian (Jeffery Ross) made a joke about how bad the chargers sucked and he got a standing ovation. I'm surprised Dean Spanos doesn't wear a bullet proof vest when he walks around in public

after all, he did such a good job with his current backup.

Be careful...many of the people who lay down hard earned money for tickets ARE sentimentalists.

2012-01-30 01:37:05 PM
Actually the ultimate irony would be for Peyton to be traded to the Giants as a backup for Eli.

Or would it be if he went to the Patriots?

Yeah, but if the new guy does well, they'll forget all about the old fart past his prime.

I agree. I really dislike the whole thing.

Manning in 2012 == Joe Montana in 1986.

He'll go somewhere, and have a few really good years. At least, that's my opinion.

You'll have about 40mil a year in quarterbacks when only one can play at a time.

Teal and orange. It's gonna happen.

2012-01-30 02:49:34 PM
He's done. His neck is spaghetti. He'll be on TeeVee in no time at all. Irsay is a dumbass if he pays Peytons 28 Mil roster bonus in the next few weeks.

2012-01-30 02:54:22 PM
Jets somehow unload Sanchez (doesn't that sound dirty?) on Miami and the Jets pay way too much for Peyton.

//and Chad Henne ends up working at the car wash

Are the Colts gaining anything by dragging this out? Or is Irsay waiting for the right moment to tweet about it? Just cut the man now, before the draft, so everything settles.

That's not necessarily true. They could have Peyton play Fullback and Luck playing QB. And then Peyton could play QB and Luck could play WR. And then Tebow could play Center, and Peyton could play Linebacker and then Luck could play Nose Tackle, and then Dan Fouts could play TE.

*screen fades to black*

And then it turns out that, all along, Herschel Walker was all of them.

Would have loved to hear what he had to say re: Peyton if his team hadn't been the suckiest bunch of sucks who ever sucked this year.

2012-01-30 03:13:29 PM
They're dragging this out for the same reason they dragged out the "decision" for him to not play a down: To sell more tickets.

No way they cut him while the Super Bowl is in Indy. It would take away from the game. Although next Wed there looks to be nothing going on so............

You pretty much have to make this move. QB talent like Luck does not come every year and when it does it always goes at the top of the draft. The Colts are at the point where they have the talent in the draft, the pick to get that talent, and a QB who has currently been in the league for over a decade. Even without the whole neck thing, I'd make this move. Take Luck, deal Peyton for what you can, and ride out the backlash from the fans. Then pray the analysts were right.

Peyton is much more of a sure thing than Luck, but Peyton is right at the expiration date. You have to make a move.

This storyline makes me miss Brett Favre.

"Colts owner on Peyton Manning's future with the team. "I can't just say no comment be sentimental. This isn't an internal decision that we'll speak on when the time is right fantasy football"

Dude has been laying the groundwork to let Manning go in the press and that's his business. And as much as a lot of farkers will come in here and be emotional about their sports, myself included, it is a business now. Which is why I hope Peyton resigns with someone and does really, really well and get's a contract stipulation that if he enters the HoF in their gear he gets some sick amount of money. And he can remind all the pragmatic types out there 'It isn't fantasy football..it's business"

2012-01-30 03:35:52 PM
He's always said it comes down to health. If Manning can play, he plays for the Colts. Irsay's not going to get rid of a sure thing in Manning for an unknown rookie. Luck (or Griffin) will get drafted regardless and they'll decide what to do with Manning closer to the season. The problem is not the $28 million bonus; I have a feeling that's going to get paid regardless of his health status since in all likelihood March is going to be too soon to know if he's going to be in football shape by September.

2012-01-30 03:40:03 PM
Peyton retires. deal with it

oldernell: Yeah, it's not like Manning could teach the new kid anything.

Heres the real question, would you pay a teacher $28 million dollars a year? My guess is that he may be back but on a one year contract to teach luck but I would laugh my ass off if they picked RGIII, that kid is a good athlete but I dont think his throwing motion translates to the NFL, just like the knock on kellen moore. Every second you take to throw means another 300lb lineman that is getting free to pancake you, just ask teebow.

turtleking: Peyton retires. deal with it

I hope so, the dude's had 3 neck surgeries in 18 months. But, you know what, if Eli wins the Super Bowl, Payton will come back to try to keep from being shown up by little bro.

Everything I've heard is that there is no timetable for these things......."it'll heal when it heals"...it isn't like a broken bone or sprained ankle (or even an ACL)....where they have a pretty good gauge of how long it takes to heal and what progress should be made at certain points.

It's not about "gaining something" it's about seeing if/when he can return...

The Geek in me would like to see Peyton go to a GOOD AFC team so we'd have a shot at the Manning ~a~ Manning Superbowl (aka Archie covers the luxury box in spooge bowl)

But here's the truth: Even Joe Montana (my personal vote for GOAT) got shown the door before he was ready to hang up his cleats, The fact that Irsay is willing to cut even Peyton Manning when it makes business sense to do so is why the Colts have been a top-contending team for a decade or more. He's basically the Anti-Danny Synder

2012-01-30 03:49:54 PM
I don't get this Luck hype. He's not any better than Sam Bradford was or Mark Sanchez or Alex Smith or Joey Harrington or Jamarcus Russell were in college.

Sure, you have guys like Eli Manning, Phillip Rivers, Matt Ryan, and Matt Stafford who turned into really great quarterbacks. It's just still such a crap shoot spending a top-5 pick on a quarterback. It seems like you only have a 50/50 chance at getting a player who maybe might turn into Peyton Manning.

2012-01-30 03:50:26 PM
If Manning feels ready to play, I'm thinking the NFL will want Manning in one of a few spots:

* Jets - Having both Mannings playing in NY would be a media firestorm, in addition to playing Brady twice a year
* Redskins - Would get to play his brother twice a year
* New L.A. team - Not appearing any team will move in 2012, but, if Manning has to sit out another year, maybe 2013.

2012-01-30 03:53:09 PM
Prediction:
Eli: "You know Peyton, I'd like shake your hand to congratulate you for retiring after an illustrious career. Unfortunately my hand is too heavy under the weight of both these rings."
Peyton: "Screw you guys, I'm pulling a Favre."

2012-01-30 03:53:31 PM
Can he come to the Eagles? I'd really like to be able to actively support my favorite team again.

meanmutton: I don't get this Luck hype. He's not any better than Sam Bradford was or Mark Sanchez or Alex Smith or Joey Harrington or Jamarcus Russell were in college.

He is miles above what those guys were, bradford may be the only close one to him, I laughed when russell was drafted first as yet another sign of Davis being insane in his old age and sanchez peaked in college, smith and harrington were hype only.

Sure alex didnt fark up too bad this year but their red zone offense has been horrendous this year and that is directly related to QB play.

2012-01-30 03:55:36 PM
ha-ha-guy: You pretty much have to make this move. QB talent like Luck Leaf does not come every year and when it does it always goes at the top of the draft.

"Highly touted rookie" is just a nice way of saying "A dude that hasn't done shiat in this league."

Tom Brady went in the 6th round, #199. Roger Staubach went in the 10th. Joe Montana went in the 3rd. In the meantime, Todd Marniovich, Tim Couch and Akili Smith are all looking for work. And Ryan Leaf is out of jail!

Most QBs are busts. There is nothing about Luck that guarantees anything. They need to dump Manning not because Luck is so good, but because Peyton is washed up.

steamingpile: Sure alex didnt fark up too bad this year but their red zone offense has been horrendous this year and that is directly related to QB play.

And if Alex wasn't doing his best McNabb impression on 3rd downs they probably win that NFC Championship game.

Seriously, he was just terrible at the end of that game.

2012-01-30 03:58:30 PM
I don't know much about his condition that kept him out of this season. But what are the risks of him playing with it? Does he have limited mobility in something, or could one hit seriously and permanently injure him? Are we talking death here? He's never been much of a scrambler, so as long as he can stand in a pocket, look around and analyze a defense, and throw the ball, he'll still most likely be the Manning of the past.

2012-01-30 03:59:05 PM
netweavr: Unfortunately my hand is too heavy under the weight of both these rings

Giants fan counting chickens before they hatch?

The worst thing the giants could have had was this week off for all the players to think about what a run of luck they have been on this past month.

TheManofPA: Can he come to the Eagles? I'd really like to be able to actively support my favorite team again.

No, no, no, all of you eagles fans supported vick and welcomed him back so now you guys are stuck with him.

Treygreen13: And if Alex wasn't doing his best McNabb impression on 3rd downs they probably win that NFC Championship game.

Yeah he had a slight meltdown with his bad decisions, I remember watching that game and thinking "jesus, the 49ers are 3 and out again?" I thought they had that game in the bag and was shocked they didnt want to win.

PowerSlacker: This storyline makes me miss Brett Favre.

Don't you DARE try to put the two together.

Favre could have wrapped up a good-to-great career with one of the best story-book endings of all time and blind adulation from a fan base that appreciated the resurrection of the Packers. The Pack offered him $20,000,000 as a parting gift to just go away and be a goodwill ambassador. He may have netted a few extra bucks in the short term with that last Vikings year, but trashed any chances he had with endorsements or a network job. I figure it's a long-term wash financially, but his reputation is utter crap now.

Manning is hurt and the media is trying to create a shiatstorm. The Colts and Manning are too mature to let this devolve into a true soap opera. They both know sports reality and the likelihood he's hurt for good.

I sincerely hope they don't mess up his legacy & stay mature about the inevitable changing of the guard.

/Packer fan who is glad the mid-'90s happened, but disappointed with drama-queen Favre and his lack of maturity.
