Snow sports have nowhere to progress unless someone can figure out how to add another axis of rotation, and I'm not sure it would be smart to flip through the air while on LSD.

Okay that was a nearly flawless run. That was good. Perfect score good? Maybe not. But still. Damn.

While it was a great ride, I thought that we would lose a fraction of a point for his hands brushing up against the pipe on his last landing, it wasn't quite a perfect ride. That said, it was awesome that he went all-out even though he had already won gold. Given his sprained ankle I doubt most fans there would have been angry with him for skipping his last ride or doing a much safer routine.

I don't watch much snowboarding, but it did seem impressive how effortless he got every landing. It was all one smooth motion.

Okay, it turns out she has more than one. That's a case of the Golden Globes failing, not me. It's from "Mask"

Saw the run.

Hands touched on final landing. One of the other landings was a little low and was just short of the rotation needed.

Run was amazing. It deserved the best score of the night for SURE, but perfect 100? I'd have been ok with a 98.9, 99.1 or some other easy listening radio station.

No, those are sports that don't have judges determining winners. Congrats, though, you're in the same category as figure skating, synchronized swimming and the slam dunk contest.

came here to say it shouldn't have been considered perfect.

perfect means it could not be better. there were a couple of landings that could have been better, and some jerky movements in the air.

still maybe one of the best runs in history though. but, perfect scores should be nearly impossible to attain.

I don't think it deserved a perfect score as he did touch his hands on the last trick, even if it is a trick that nobody else can do.

But, a 99 would've been pretty cool to see, too.

Pretty much this. I'm sure that White's star power/celebrity status in the world of "Winter X Games" had nothing to do with the subjective scoring system that subjectively gave him a "perfect" score that can be flogged to death as "promotional" material for the next set of games, or whatever. ESPN sure does love its "first time in history" headlines.

This. However I thought it was awesome that ESPN gave airtime to the monoskier-x races. Those guys have no lack of testicular fortitude. The fact they landed the road gap and the last booter (except in the finals) was awe inducing! Casing the landing one of those rollers on a snowboard sucks, I can't imagine doing it in a sit-ski and snapping the ski underneath. Every time they went over them I cringed because they basically have no way to absorb the top of the roll or pop off it to double to the next one. They just have to take the punishment.

Cudos to the X-games and a massive round of applause for the monoskier-x competitors!

/Don't care about snowboarder pipe any more.
//Slopestyle and street were fun to watch though.

In other news, a sporting event, designed by ESPN specifically to sell advertising, drummed up a milestone to reward one of their manufactured athletes and, by doing so, drum up even more attention and sell even more advertising.

The "X Games" schtick just isn't pushing the Brawndo like it used to, apparently.

Coming up on SportsCenter ... We reveal what Tim Tebow had for breakfast ... our panel of experts make Super Bowl predictions that'll change a dozen times by Sunday ... highlights from the X-Games ... LeBron James dunks a ball really hard and we may tell you who actually won that game ... and if there's time we'll show 45 seconds of NHL highlights (muffled laughter)

A panel of judges decided he was a gold medalist. If its scored by a judge, its not a sport. I'm not saying it isn't extremely difficult and that it doesn't take a huge amount of athletic ability to do what he does, but the same can be said for a Cirque De Soleil acrobat or a ballet dancer.

...and he's spent the last half a decade humping a skateboard & snowboard in the X Games for pocket money, because the manufactured event is paid for by his biggest sponsors. For the X Games, he is, indeed, a manufactured athlete.

Won't get an argument from me on that.
The NFL is basically a four-hour beer commercial interrupted on occasion by single plays made by overpaid "athletes", who take breaks from their criminal activity to show up & pout in pads, on teams owned by rich bastards happy to extort money from state & local governments so they can continue the pissing match for which we pay exorbitant sums of money for the privilege of viewing.

I'm a Puget Sound resident. I'm happy that Oklahoma City is stuck with the Chunder, and I just wish some rich bastard would buy the Seahawks.

You just nailed the reason why I don't watch Sportscenter anymore. I get that panel discussions and constant updates on particular athletes is what works now, but it's not for me. All I want is some farkin' highlights.

I do still like PTI though. I'm never home in time to actually watch it, but still.

What does this even mean? He competes in the largest annual Extreme sports competition in the country. Sure, it's a commercial event to sell energy drinks, but that doesn't change the nature of the sport. Shaun White has worked hard for a long time to be the best in his field, he wasn't manufactured by anybody.

He's one of those "don't need to know him personally" guys.

He really doesn't treat other competitors well, and kind of ignores the fact that other people helped him get where he is. He has an extremely well managed public image though.

I think Park City is about the only area in Utah that could handle the crowds. That's where the alpine events were for the 2002 Olympics. The only downside I see to that is I don't know if they have to water access required to blow enough snow to make the terrain features required nor a park crew specialized enough to build huge jumps that are safe.

Lastly, I don't think the Deer Valley crowd would be too happy with all the snowboarder kids coming into town.

I'm trying to understand how he somehow differs from other wealthy athletes.

Hell I remember watching Shawn White competing in skateboarding competitions on ESPN when he was 13 or something. That was BEFORE the X-Games and all that.
