These are the people protecting us from International Terrorism, are they? I ask merely for information

Despite telling officials at LAX airport the term "destroy" was British slang for partying, the pair were held on suspicion of planning to "commit crimes".
Question 1.
Would it be okay for me to plan a trip to the U.K. to tray to photograph the Queen, and then tweet that I plan to "shoot the Queen"?
Question 2.
Why is "commit crimes" in quotes?

Hey, they managed to link a twitter account to a person who bought a plane ticket, to a person entering customs.
So while the application of that information is facepalmingly stupid -- the technical side is apparently more capable than I expected.

Why deport them?

I think it's a British thing -- they'll put anything that is a quote from a source in quotes, even if it's just one or two words.

If there tweet said they were planning to "shoot Obama" you would have a point but they didn't, just another massive overreaction which paints the US in a bad light again.
Seems the TSA is determined to destroy america's tourism industry more than any terrorist threats, definitely off my holiday destination list for the foreseeable future (not because of this, it was crossed off along tome ago but this doesn't help).

Simple - - CYA. If the two goofheads did do something stupid and it later came out that INS had passed them thru immigration even though they knew of their comments, someone's head would roll. Unfortunate side effect of today's "gotta blame SOME body" mentality.

Glad we've got federal agents paid $90,000 per year with full benefits and 20 yr public safety retirement pension to go through Twitter accounts and (likely) Fark pages, among others. Go figure why our economy continues to tank. Further, let's see their electronic communications or provide us with some insight and accountability into what our tax dollars are paying for in the DHS boondoggle. Some stats maybe? Some guidelines? And I LIKE the US, so I can only imagine how it's starting to look to others.

Can we cut the portion of DHS' budget that is monitoring Twitter and Facebook please?
They are probably investing millions in it and have discovered what the rest of the planet already knows:
TERRORISTS DO NOT "TWEET" THEIR TERROR PLANS.
...And good luck digging up someone locked sealed in concrete, in an elevated tomb...in a locked building...in a closed cemetery. I think that one could have been dismissed outright. Which brings me to another handy tip for DHS:
Stores in the USA sell shovels. There is no point in "Searching their baggage for spades." since A) They would have been confiscated when they tried to board a plane carrying shovels. B) They cost about $5 at any hardware store in any city in America.

Right? Twitter/Fark/whatever is being monitored for keywords by computers. Leads are then followed-up by HS educated guys being paid outrageous salaries...who can then afford to buy the foreclosed homes of people who used to have jobs that actually added to the GDP. The Aristocrats!

I don't think these Tweets were reviewed by a human being. This reeks of screen-scraping looking for buzzwords. So instead of complaining about $90,000/yr people, you should complain about $300M IT contracts to write simple Perl scripts.

If you think about this in more depth, the stupidity of the TSA is not the real eyebrow raiser here. What should scare you more is that billions has been spent on gaining back door access to ALL the data feeds of ALL internet activity by the US (and UK) governments.
All ISPs and core network data providers have their data fed to the NSA.
All social media providers (facebook, twitter) give DIRECT access to ALL data that is posted to the NSA
All telecoms providers (AT&T, BT, Virgin, etc) provide all their data (calls, voice, SMS) to the NSA.
There is a huge amount of IT linking your on-line activities so the US/UK government can track and target it's citizens.
The appearance of these two twatterati on no-fly lists is the visible output of this activity.
