Statler: Maybe that's how they got the saying
Waldorf: What do you mean?
Statler: Crazy like they're on Fox!

Statler: So Fox News claims that they're fair and balanced
Waldorf: Yup, that's what they say
Statler: I know something that's not fair OR balanced
Waldorf: What's that?
Statler: Golden Corral's profits after Piggy eats there!

Hmmm, when the Muppets seem more electable than the republicans and more reliably accurate than the news, we have a real problem.

Somehow I don't think Henson would have done nor allowed this. I am not saying that the puppeteers are wrong. I am simply saying that Henson appeared to be above all of that.

The Muppets were ALWAYS socially relevant and up on pop culture. That's what sets them apart, and makes them the first real form of children's entertainment that's also fully satisfying to adults.

It's sad and scary. My dad for example. We're both from AL, but have always been at odds with our worldview. Once, after he launched into a particularly hateful tirade about liberals on the phone, I tried to tell him that Glenn Beck was a pundit and he was basically paid to lie. Also he is insane and nobody should be listening to him, much less spouting his drivel. Dad got so mad at me for "talking bad 'bout" Glenn Beck that he stopped taking my phone calls for 2 months.

This is what we're up against folks.

You mean what the liberally-biased, lamestream media would have you believe is the truth? You're really going to take the majority's opinion over a fair and balanced one?

Remember what Mark Twain said: "Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to reform (or pause and reflect)."

Sounds like my Dad. My son had a chance to do a trip through Europe (its a bit too expensive right now). I told my Dad about this and he started ranting about how he would not go anywhere, especially 'over there', as things are just awful and you don't know what those people over there are going to do. He said the same thing about my recent business trips to England and Chile.

I doesn't matter that I literally work with people all over the globe daily and have friendships with many of those coworkers. It does not matter that I tell him what is on the news is mostly BS and that the fear that everyone in the UK is a raging socialist, just waiting to force evil socialized medicine on us is just crap to keep him watching the news. Nope, Fox and whatever crap conservative sites that keep putting wonderful 'antimalware' software on his machine are the correct ones.

Its really sad as he always has to start ranting about this crap nearly every time we talk. So I don't talk to him as much.

Yep. My wife has a crazy aunt, and the first thing I heard her bleat at the Christmas gathering this year was about how the new muppets movie was anti-capitalist. For a moment I forgot who I was speaking to and I assumed she was being factitious, so I said something flippant along the lines of "I think when we start getting all bent out of shape over what a sock with a hand up it's ass says, it may be time to take a step back and reevaluate." She huffed "Well, it's in there!" (she KNOWS that for a fact, even though she's never seen the movie) and didn't speak to me for the rest of night. So, yeah, it worked out nicely, but those people do exist out there.

It used to be that there were fewer channels and outlets so you had to listen to the news from a source, even if you didn't always agree with the source.

Thiis led to "discussion" which made the topic of politics not such a horrible thing to talk about.

Unfortunately, now if you don't want to hear a certain opinion, you can switch the channel to another. You don't want to read a certain way of thinking on a subject? load a different site.
You can surround yourself solely with people who make you believe what you are thinking is the 100% correct thing. And then you ca use that army of support against anyone who thinks differently, before you just tune them out or stop speaking to them.

The silent treatment from family and friends is the byproduct of this. When faced with opposing opinions in public settings, the people who surround themselves 100% with those who agree with them are just schit out of luck. so, they just turn off and end up having a horrible time (if it's at a party or a dinner) or just being left alone (phone calls stop, etc.).

My sibling and parent cannot even talk about politics anymore because both of them are just as guilty of reading/listening to only those they agree with.

I admit a crapload on Fark in politics threads (or recently the OWS stuff) frightens me in how some people flat out state their belief and then get the support. But I like to at least hear it so I can go "huh, so that's how the other way of thinking is" and use that to help guide my opinion more.

But that's an exception to the rule it seems.

I'm still hoping that, some day, Ailes & Murdoch appear on one of their network's fine programs and proclaim the whole notion of 'fair and balanced' and everything was a big hoax. Or just have Ashton Kutcher come running out followed by a bunch of cameras.

Naturally. But then again, we all knew that the "nah nah nah nah I can't heaaaar you" approach has been the lynchpin of conservative arguments against truth and facts, which as we also know, are liberally biased. I really don't know if it's sad or if it's scary. Can it be both?
