It's meant to make you read the headline in a British accent. Or a drunk Irish accent. Whichever you prefer.

The "leftenant"
pronunciation
is generally used in the UK and other Commonwealth nations. I think that it's supposed to be spelled "lieutenant" regardless of the pronunciation.

At this point I have to wonder why Assad or anyone would want to hold on. Even if you win, you spend the rest of your life worried about being killed and with the West pissed at you (so sanctions, etc). Just loot the treasury, gather up your inner circle, and flee the country. Go settle somewhere nice, invest in Berkshire Hathaway and Exxon. Live comfortably off the dividends on some beach somewhere.

Power of the sort Assad has is not something that can usually be given up, once tasted. People like him also tend to surround themselves with sycophants and yes-men so they never really get a clear picture of how things really are, asa result they almost never understand when its time to go.
I found it interesting that it was reported on NPR last week that the reason Russia is so adamantly backing Syria is because in Putin's mind popular uprisings are NEVER legitimate, people simply don't have a right to question or protest what their government is doing according to him. He apparently also sees all these "colored" or named revolutions as Western plots rather than home-grown, grass-roots rebellions. Other Russian official privately use the word "paranoid" to describe his state of mind about these uprisings.

Yes, but right now there is no King. Just a Queen and her Consort. Won't be a King until she dies or abdicates.
And she's as German as anyone else who was born in England to parents who were also born in England who were born to people who were themselves born in England. To get a German person, you need to go back to her great grandfather.
Her husband is Greek, so our next King will be either half or a quarter Greek depending on the order they pop off in.

Where are you getting your information from? I ask because it sounds highly plausible and I'd love to read more about it. Putin is a construct of the Soviet System. The Ivan Drago of politics. I really wonder if the theory he has $90 billion in foreign banks is true. All he would have had to do was take a piece of every major deal done since the collapse. An "allowance" fee to allow the deals to go through.
If he regains the Presidency, Russians might actually start asking for some kind of new leadership. Never seen the kinds of protests they are having now. Perhaps the people have had enough of autocrats. It goes against their history, but it's really interesting to watch.
