I do a bit of time-lapse myself around observatories (like this), but adding motion graphics is pretty slick.

Who needs motion graphics when you have lasers?

Those lasers are pretty cool. It is amazing how boring those telescopes seem until you put together a time lapse of them in action.

I've been there. From a sat image, it seems they have tracks for the dishes that go ~10 miles out. I wonder if they ever spread out that far...

Yep, they do on a regular basis. When the dishes are spread out, you get high "magnification" but very limited field of view. When the dishes are close, you can see more of the sky. Sounds backwards, but that's how long baseline interferometry works.

It's a nice visit, but you kinda have to travel thru hundreds of miles of Tatooine (literally) to get to it. Best to combine it with a trip to white sands.

I had a relative in Socorro, so it wasn't insanely pointless. I got a t-shirt!

That's only 2.5 hours from my house. Guess I never realized how close it is.

I've never been, nor have I been to Trinity.

I need to go soon.

Also, I second the comment about the burrito. Green chile can wreck you if you're not accustomed.

If you don't live here, or aren't used to it, don't order "Christmas" when the waitress asks if you want red or green.

You will pay.

When I first read about guide star lasers, I thought "this is some sweet futuristic shiat!" My mind was blown when I found that it was a real thing and not just CG thrown on to videos to look cool.

JohnAnnArbor - yes, some others. Mad_Radhu and Tobin_Lam, yeah, lasers make everything cooler... and yes, most of the time, when they're just tracking something that's going to take six farking hours to get across the sky, telescopes move at ultra-boring-speed. :)

I really, really, wish they hadn't gone with the whole "Laser Guide Star" name - you can't guide the telescope using a "star" generated by something that's attached to the telescope. But yeah, they're lots of fun.

Well that was intensely annoying.

I certainly wouldn't have minded seeing the sped-up videos alone, but as it was, I couldn't make it past half-way through without closing the tab in irritation.

Oh man, now I'm hungry.

On our trip to the Southwest this summer, SWMBO witnessed me ordering a Christmas breakfast burrito. Tasty, but I thought she was gonna yack.

Too much noise, and not enough signal. Just because you can repeat sections doesn't mean you should.
I managed 45 seconds before baling.

I enjoyed yours much more than the submitted link. I love seeing the range of stars slowly shifting as Earth rotates.
