Ok. How I have seen everything.

Is the rabbit actually taking instructions on where to move the sheep to, or just chasing them about for shiats and giggles? That seems to be an important part of the process.

I was impressed at how the rabbit didn't back down when a sheep or two tried to get a little aggressive with him. That rabbit has got a pair, for sure.

THIS. Every once in a while a sheep would fall behind and he didn't seem to chase it, though it joined the herd on its own. I didn't see a POINT to his chasing. No corral doors or any destination. Cute, but misrepresented. Rabbits aren't THAT trainable.

Well, they cut off the video right before the rabbit put on the thigh-high boots and herded the whole bunch of 'em over to the edge of the cliff.

Pretty much. He chases them because he can and because they run. Did you notice how the guy with the empty feed bucket kept leading them back to where the rabbit could chase them?

Why was the sheep herding dog wearing that stupid rabbit suit?

At the end of the video the dog eats the rabbit and gets some actual work done.

I used to raise rabbits as a kid, and this behavior is rare.

One of them would act like a dog though, fetching things and letting me scratch his belly; maybe it's a gene mutation.

My last rabbit, BlackJack, was like a dog. LOVED to be chased around the lawn (would binky all over, and when you stopped he would just start eating the grass), would come when you called him, and would remain in place for as long as you were petting him. Just adored attention, and he got plenty of it. We even got to the point where he would rest his chin in the palm of your hand as you pet him. God, I miss that rabbit.

The video doesn't look like he was herding them, more like chasing or imitating what the dog does. I could be wrong on that but my take. However I do believe the a rabbit could be trained to herd the sheep as they are pretty intelligent. Like most animals training is simply a matter of repetition and patience with something that motivates them.

Most people assume rabbits are pretty passive and cuddly but like any animal they will fight if necessarily. Since a rabbits first instinct is to beat feat we don't see their aggressive side very much, but a rabbit can kick the shiat outta you. A friend moved in with us as she's in a tough spot and brought 3 cats into the house. We were worried about the cats but we quickly discovered that wouldn't be an issue. The rabbits were there first so din't go into flight mode and instead went into territory defense. After a couple of beatdowns all the cats give the bunnies wide berth, one will actually run when one enters the room. Although in his defense his tail is a couple inches shorter now.

2012-01-29 11:04:24 PM
It looks like he chases the sheep away from his pen, not really herding them with an actual destination in mind.

Still cute but I prefer rabbits roasted in bacon fat and served with gravy, corn, onions and mashed potato.

Fun story: When "Babe" initially came out McDonalds had Babe happy meals. Think about that for a second.

I went in and asked if I could get a Babe happy meal burger with bacon on it. Either the kid at the counter had heard that a thousand times or he had zero sense of irony, because he just stared at me blankly. I ended up getting a regular one with the little stuffed cow.

Those sheep have the same look my cat had when he was first introduced to my rabbit. Terrified.

/The rabbit was in the family before the cat. Pecking order is important.
//It would be funny if one of the sheep was named Anya.

Jinx (the cat) always looks like that. When he was 3 or 4 he drug himself into the backyard pretty farked up one Sunday morning, both his upper and lower jaws were broken in the middle and he lost most of his teeth. Dipshiat vets at the emergency clinic said he'd been hit by a car and soaked us for $600 bucks overnite, our vet wired him back together for $150. IMHO one of the crack heads in our neighborhood smacked him with something and they better hope I never find out who did it. He's almost 14 now, has less than half a dozen teeth left, and subsists on Indoor Cat food (tiny pieces he doesn't have to chew).
