As someone who has coughed up frozen chunks after sprinting on my bike at -10F, and paying for it ... for weeks..

These people are insane.

2012-01-29 08:17:06 PM
and I've skipped the Manhattan Half two years running

or, rather, not running

Only one word for that temperature: Nipuler.

Bingo. Just running in the (positive) teens or 20s makes my chest hurt.

If I saw -49 on the thermometer, I'd say screw that and pour myself a hot drink.

2012-01-29 08:22:34 PM
I've gone hashing in 6 degree weather and mountain biked in 2 degree... (At least with the former there was beer)

2012-01-29 08:22:39 PM
I refuse to go out and run at temperatures under 49 degrees. One has to draw the line somewhere.

2012-01-29 08:27:02 PM
I like my running the same way I like my women: hot, indoors, sweaty, and in tight exercise shorts.

2012-01-29 08:27:55 PM
Better chance for a good age group placing!

2012-01-29 08:28:52 PM
Oh, fark that. I'm not going out in that for anything short of The End Of the World.

2012-01-29 08:32:59 PM
I would but my penis is staying in bed.

-49 Degrees? This is how I would suit up for the race.

But was it fun? I don't think so.

2012-01-29 08:42:45 PM
I used to run at -25F. A scarf helped, but had to be careful not to breath through my nose for too long. A huge plus side was my knees and other joints never felt pain. It was awesome!

Harry_Seldon: I refuse to go out and run at temperatures under 49 degrees. One has to draw the line somewhere.

Yeah, usually, as a Canadian, I draw the line at the onset of congelatio

/which is nearly always these days
//January is like one continuous frozen hell up here

2012-01-29 09:01:55 PM
My cut-off point for running is freezing, but if it's below 45, it has to at least be SUNNY. And it can't be raining.

/Up to running almost 2 miles now
//Started running last July and could only run a couple of blocks before I was winded

2012-01-29 09:04:11 PM
I hope there were plenty of water stops along the course. Wouldn't want anyone to get overheated.

When friends in the lower 48 write to me about these articles, I use my favorite movie quote:

"a good supply of body bags"

2012-01-29 09:14:39 PM
And they have what, 3-4 hours daylight this time of year?

2012-01-29 09:19:57 PM
I have skied in -35 F in full gear. Absolutely intolerable.

2012-01-29 09:48:51 PM
I've cross-country skied when it was -10 F. Too farking cold. Every breath you take through your nose freezes in your nostrils.

The words "fun" and "run" do not even belong in the same sentence, let alone used next to one another.

I did 6+ miles in a sunny 28 degrees on quiet Saturday morning recently and I ran a 15k in December in 34 degree weather... (Caffeine and Under Armour helps...) But I can't believe those times these runners ended up with... Pretty incredible.

Just checking.

Cassata26: 34 degree weather...

I'd run that in shorts.

Low 20s I start hurting, though.

I'm pretty sure I've never even seen -49. Coldest I've known would have been as a child, and that was in Celsius, so who knows how to even compare?

I really dislike running in the cold so it has to be really hot for me to wear shorts... (My lungs never hurt actually, it's more the dull ache/numbness in my legs.)

It's a necessary evil unfortunately, but thankfully the thermal running gear they make now a days works really well.

Pfft...

The US Air Force Academy GoRuck Challenge went down Fri Night/Sat Morning and all 7 of the cadets of the USAFA Combat Shooting Team (including two former grads) who signed up proudly finished the whole event. Run by Special Forces guys to raise money for the Green Beret Foundation, its hours of PT, a 21mile ruck with 60lbs and your part of a log and then more PT.

Bad.Ass.

I'm proud of them all.

yeah

try running that in SF in the summer

I have it on good authority that's colder than the coldest winter.

2012-01-29 10:47:10 PM
I should have clarified, it started out at the AFA, at about 7500ft above sea level. The SF pic is just the main page picture. I don't have any from the other night yet.

I guess me
F=9/5 C + 32
Both the same temp at -40, so -49F = -45 C

Fun fact: Fahrenheit is ALWAYS colder. This is why people in Scandinavia don't die.

2012-01-29 10:52:04 PM
I'm sorry. That sentence was a bit confusing. I don't know how cold the coldest Celsius I experienced was.

But I still don't understand how you can compare the two unless you have some sort of Rosetta Stone of temperature. The thermometers were different too. They were glass with silver or red liquid in them, and like a little ruler painted on or nailed to the back of them. The Fahrenheit ones I've seen are all digital.

Guess the knowledge is just something we've lost to the passage of time.

Alright this might make me sound like an internet tough guy but running in cold temps really isn't that bad. I live in the Northwest Territories where it regularly hits -40 Celsius in the winter months, and I go running or snowshoeing at least a few times a week year round.
Besides the annoyance of breathing through a balaclava, I prefer running in the winter because it's easier to maintain a lower body temp and not overheat or have aching joints as you run. You're not going to freeze your lungs...though you might get a farkload of ice built up on your eyebrows.

I'm wondering if people are thinking that you need to run in "running attire" similar to that in warmer climates? Here's what I'd typically wear to go running or snowshoeing at -40C, or even -50C:

thermal long johns
insulated active pants (sort of like snowpants....but smaller and easier to run in)
wool socks
baffin boots (not the big ones...but a low cut one)
dry fit top
fleece (even this isn't always necessary. If I'm running hard or snowshoeing I usually just need the top and a jacket)
soft shell jacket
balaclava
toque (unless there's no wind...then I just wear the balaclava)
liner gloves
mitts

So that may sound like a lot, but it's not like you're running around like the Michelin Man or anything. If anything you need to worry about sweating when winter running cause then you're farked unless you KNOW you can make it home okay.

Speaking of winter running...there's a 45km marathon in Yellowknife, NWT in March. Believe it or not, it actually gets a fair number of participants.

Unfortuantely no, they did descend into Colorado Springs, but then it was back up to return to the AFA. It was between 10° and -21° depending on where/when.

faaaaaaaark that

/I'm from a place that has an average yearly temperature of 80, I was in +40 once, and I thought I was dying, I don't want to know what it's like on the inverse side of the zero.

Oh HELL no. Walking to class in -10 weather a couple times in college was bad enough. I remember the first time I did, I was so exhausted by the time I got to the lecture hall that I fell asleep.

Fun fact: -40 degrees (the point where Fahrenheit and Celsius intersect) is also the average winter low in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Outer Mongolia. Not as unpleasant as you might think since the air there is thin and dry.

At that temperature you get fun effects like water freezing before it hits the ground,,, and if you take an "empty" soda bottle full of 70-degree air outside, you get to watch it collapse as the air inside cools to sub-zero temperatures rather rapidly.

Went camping at -20F once. Only once. I like my balls attached to my body, thank you.
