That there is a restriction on alcohol content at all is ridiculous. I participated in Alabama's Free The Hops movement, and am so glad we finally have made headway on craft beer in this state. I feel as if I live in a slightly less silly portion of America now.

It is my understanding that Pliny the Elder doesn't travel well, or some such. Also, arcane distribution laws for the win. I wish I could get it in Massachusetts. But I can still get Bear Republic Racer 5, Ballast Point Sculpin and Ithaca Flower Power, so it's all good.

Mississippi is the last state to have a law that bans high gravity beer.

Well, to be fair, it can create a hazard to navigation when it's got lighter beers orbiting around it.

Really, I just wish all the states could just normalize their laws and allow craft brews to blossom in all their variety. I love being able to sample the spectrum of choices already available. More breweries means more unknown brewmasters can learn and hone their craft.

It's really quite nice that in the twenty years I've been drinking the phrase "American beer" now means something awesome.

Southern Baptists think that alcohol is evil. It's a holdover from Prohibition. They don't ever wonder why Christians didn't have a problem with alcohol until about 1910. The Baptists that I know are convinced the the "wine" in the Bible was not actually wine.

rustypouch: So where's this 'freedom' you Yanks are always going on about?

Mississippians would object to the label 'Yanks', and real Yanks would too. Frankly, I'm not sure all of them are even human beings. Whenever I think of Mississippi I am reminded of the Martense family from Lovecraft's story the Lurking Fear: monstrous things created by inbreeding and ignorance, whose ancestors were men a few brief centuries ago.

Oooh, I love the Sculpin - probably one of the only IPAs in San Diego that doesn't try to drown you in hops. It's nice being about 3 miles from the brewery, too.

I hope you are joking. Premium is one of the most offensive beers ever, the overwhelming sweetness and putrid smell of hay makes it gag inducing. It is one of a very few beers that I will flat out refuse to drink, and that says a lot.

Texas only recently legalized beer as labeled such. It used to be anything over 5% was by law 'ale'...even when not actually ale.

Alcohol laws are bizarre.

The best part? Jesus was turning water into wine to give to people who were already drunk. So clearly the bible supports not only drinking, but binge drinking.

John 2:7 Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.

8 Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet."

They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, "Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now."

Just to be clear, Southern Baptists think that other people's alcohol is evil. The stuff they buy by the case is sanctified by The Lord.

Currently i am in MS. (yah I know, boohoo) and you can get plenty of decent beer if you haul ass outta here and hit up Louisiana or Tennessee.

I got stuff called Devastator (from Utah of all places), and Lobotomy Bock (not really tasty, but strong so thats a +), and my old stand-bys Spaten Optimator and Paulaner Salvator all over in LA. Also something called Hobgoblin, which was also tasty. I made it a point of getting about a case and a half of the strong tasty stuff back in late September and still have a 6'er left actually.

I did see some Rouge chocolate stout for sale in one hipster grocery here in the Jackson area, but that was about it, otherwise everyone just sucks down their Bud Light or rum, moonshine, wine or whatnot. And yes there are lots of bible thumper robots who want to dictate what others should or should not do, which is why I am posting - for anyone who reads this:

Get me the fark out of here~

basemetal: I expected this to be about Okla.

You can get strong beer in Oklahoma, you just have to buy it at a liquor store. You can't get it at a grocery or convenience store. The article gives the impression that you can't get beer higher than five points ANYWHERE in the state of Mississippi. That's insane.

Why yes we are a republic, though the central government has grabbed a lot more power for itself than the founding fathers intended so we're closer to your idea of a country than we were supposed to be.

It's not likely that I would drink either, but if given the choice between only those two I would gladly drink the Budweiser. I would drink Black Label or Mountain Crest before I would drink Premium, and those beers are down right disgusting.
