TFA has:

1) Picture of a chick with fake redhair in pigtails, and enough ink to qulaify for a job as Lydia, the Tattooed lady in a carnival up to the 1960s.

2) Quote from douchebag: "I can't speak for everyone, but I think the reaction we're going to have is: Absolutely not in this community," said Matt Ruben, president of the board of the Northern Liberties Neighbors Association.

3) Was paginated, so it's sure to draw some ire.

4) Has facts, so this could get epic in derpdom.

5) has a "think of the children" vibe.

6) Contains concerns for the quality of life in an urban area. So, who cares?

7) Deals with the macroeconomics of Big City financial planning, and is sure to draw the attention of political thread types.

So, all in all, a FARK-Worthy green light. I would not read again, but you did get me to click on the link, so I award you one point. Be sure to mention "I'll Drink To That" at least once in this thread, and we should have a comment section that totals at least 67 comments by midnight. Or, I could be wrong, this being the land of civil discussion and alcoholism and prudent thought and all.

After reading TFA, I have come to one conclusion: I'm old. There was a time when we'd have after hours after the after hours, and Las Call coincided nicely with the sunrise. Unless there was Gin and Juice, in which case we'd go 'till noon at least. Now, the idea of having the bar stay open until three am makes me want to go have a nap.

Ah, college. The best 5 1/2 years of my life.

"This is just going to cause more problems," he said. "Even if you stagger closing times, the drunks will just go to the next bar."

Stagger, heh.

Instead of pants-shiatting, why can't they research whether cities that have a later last call have higher crime rates? It would probably take a low level staffer about 3 hours to pull all the data they need.

Hey, I'm glad you posted that Simpsons pic. It doesn't get used nearly enough around here.

Actually, they are thinking of the children, as drinks are heavily taxed to...wait for it.....to balance/fund the Philly school budget! Win! Win! Have 'nother Alabama Slammer, and we'll have another penny (more?) to teach the Civil War!

I'd argue that a later closing time will actually result in less noise on the streets.

At 2pm when bars close, there are a lot of people/groups of people not quite ready to go home. When the bars kick them out, they loiter in the streets for a while trying to plan their next move. With later closing times, people go home when they're ready, and as a result, there's no loitering in the streets.

I live half the year in Leuven (Belgium), where there is no effective closing time. And no, that does not reduce the noise or fighting. It just spreads it out.

Not that I would ever argue for the police to enforce the nominal close time ...

Yeah, I would love to listen to dips from New Jersey clip clopping up my block to Lorrenzo's at three am or screaming in the parking lot by my building so that Philly Schools can be marginally more effective.

Other Austerity Plans:
1. To replace School Pep Rallies with already active School Pep Riots.
2. Teach school in Prison, and bus in the 14 children still not locked up.
3. Start a war with Camden, NJ for mutually beneficial population reductions.

/Bars close whenever they want to already.
//Cops wouldn't dare enter a bar full of drunken Pennsyltuckians.

I would just to tongue-draw the outline to all her body art.

Eh... I thought so too, until I looked at the enlarged picture. Not so much.

I actually like the idea, as it means the drunks will be stumbling home an hour later, which means they'll be less likely to wake me up.

My question/concern is as follows:

When does mass transit stop (or reduce its frequencies) in the areas impacted by this. Basically if you extent the hours of the bar without extending the infrastructure, you just increase the DUI.

On the other hand if you extend mass transit, you might end up robbing Peter to pay Paul. Schools get more money, but the bus and subway eat the cost by having to stay active later to handle the drunks (who likely aren't numerous enough to make the mass transit break even).

Although I would point out: DUI Checkpoints + Bars Close at 3 AM + Mass Transit Stops at 2 AM = lots of revenue.

Regional rail stops at 11 am anyway so the people who would be enjoying this would be locals and people who enjoy waiting 45 min. to never for a bus.

The trains and subways close down at about 12:30 as it is. As if that makes any sense

she's a nice girl.

I'm totally against that stupid idea. It will to turn my neighborhood into more of a drunkin' red neck free for all than it already is.

/got to get out of this cesspit
