Not ever?

Dammit! Almost got that little farker for good. Note to self: don't lead the kids as much.

There's nothing like a small, fast moving target to hone your sharpshooting skills.

2012-01-28 10:12:48 PM
Um, if I've got a working vehicle, I'm sure as hell not going to be a stationary target....

A lot of holes in the desert, and a lot of problems are buried in those holes.

Of course not. That would be a waste of the landmines.

Clearly, Subby has never been to Arizona

The way the article is written, it sounds sop in that area. I won't be visiting.

How can you shoot women or children?
Easy, you just don't lead em as much!

Iraqi peoples problems...

Obviously, illegal immigrants shot him. If they caught him they would have decapitated him as well.

Maricopa County. So yeah, was he brown?

You mean there are things you aren't allowed to shoot at?

Wait, what?

Sometimes you have to drive them into the landmines.

Isn't it easier to reload than to go out and place another landmine? And aren't landmines more expensive than bullets?
I'm not sure you've thought this through, but feel free to correct me. It just seems to me, like landmines should only go off if they get past your bullets. Passive defenses should not be relied upon, especially when assertive defenses are available.

I heard a story once about about a couple of drunk deer hunters in the middle of the woods who fired at what they thought was a deer. It turned out to be a couple of boys riding ATVs which were new at the time. The first hunter managed to kill the first boy with a single shot. The second hunter then fired another shot thinking that the first hunter had missed. He killed the second boy also with a single shot.

Unfortunately they were big time city lawyers and with a little help from their friends, they got off Scot free

All guns are always loaded.
Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

That "like" was a remnant from rearranging that sentence, and should be disregarded. Darn lack of editing; I hate it when you only notice typos after you've posted.

Also ATV riders are assumed to be armed.

I'm surprised the dad didn't return fire.

I dunno, ATV'ers tend to be morons and destructive towards wherever they're driving around in.

Somehow, in all my times shooting in Tahoe National Forest, and near the Salton Sea, where I often shared the area with ATVers, I have managed to never shoot anyone. Am I doing something wrong?

First rule of using public use areas: Don't by an A-hole.

Since I live right down the street from this, I'm not getting a kick...

I believe there is a military-type installation in the same area. CSB time: My dad took a helicopter ride while visiting out here and said that when they flew over the area discussed in the article, he could see people shooting towards the freeway. Seems stupid to me to let offroaders and people firing guns get that close to each other.

Ahhh Arizona, what a cesspool.

ATV's kick up dust and cause poor air quality. They also destroy vegetation and disturb wildlife.

/probably do other destructive stuff

Deserts don't get much rainfall to cover up the tire tracks and pot holes caused by tires or any heavy human use. If you tear up any vegetation in the desert, it isn't going to come back like it does in places that are wetter. Some of those little tiny ground plants that hold the sand in place are several years old, and once you drive over them, they're pretty much dead. Those cacti you see that are six inches tall could be 10 or 20 years old, and they're also helping to hold the soil in place and prevent sandstorms.

You can drive ATVs and hike all over more temperate climates for years before a lot of damage is done, because the plants and soil are hardier. Also if a desert trail is getting used, it's probably getting year-round use and never has time to recover.

And from my own experience I can tell you that ATVers aren't known for staying on designated roads and trails. It only takes one moron who decides to blaze a trail through the desert to make a trail for the next 20 years.
