that's pretty spiffy...damn shame you couldn't do something like that in this country. someone would dump their garbage into the waterways, then get uppity when you fined them for being a polluting asshat.

All the boats seem to be travelling on the right-hand side of the canal. I thought you passed a dutchy on the left-hand side.

Oh hey, I've totally been there. We were visiting an older couple who who lived in the Netherlands and knew my grandparents from a long time ago (long story). Anyways, the older lady was actually born in one of the houses along the canal, and we got a nice tour via their nephew Klaus who owned one of the nicest boats in town. Its an awesome place, and there's a cafe somewhere in there that made a fantastic apple pie.

/inb4 cool story bro

I can name quite a few in Maine, the Casco Bay alone hosts many beautiful islands with no roads, or "not really" roads. Unfortunately until recently, for most, the bay was a trash can for food scraps but it's improved markedly.

You could, it just wouldn't have a rustic, small town charm. Instead it would be Venice Beach.

So this is in the Netherlands? I had no idea.

Mackinaw Island is a great place to visit. Sadly we didn't stay on the island, but a lot of cool history stuff.

In Florida long ago I stayed in a "botel", a hotel with boat access by canal. We drove there, but did take a boat during our stay.

I would like to see (from a distance) a car-free enclave in one of those cities where people complain about car-centered lifestyles. I don't think it would work. (I don't count Mackinac Island; it's a small tourist gimmick in the middle of nowhere.)

I once had to deliver a dutch oven to a dike in Holland.

Is it covered in trash because people get indignant about being ticketed for littering?

I had to explain to a dutch guy a couple years ago what a Dutch Rudder was.

He laughed hysterically, then became forever addicted to urbandictionary.com.

Not sure if you're trolling or not, but the country only has one name. Holland is a small region of The Netherlands, not an alternative name, and Dutch is a perfectly acceptable way of referring to things from or in The Netherlands.

According to google maps, there are lots of roads, in fact every house seems to be accessible by road or at least has a bridge that goes to the road.
