Apparently a site called Tech Blog can't be bothered to keep up to date on the current social media.

They don't seem to have a very good grasp of what is 'geeky,' do they?

That's what I thought too. Some of those things are funny, and "smart ass" but geeky? Where? Maybe the 404 room not found...

404 room, Asteroid elevator button... those are the only 'geeky' ones I saw in that list. Lame.

2012-01-28 07:11:36 PM
The Apple products link next to it is interesting though. So many computers in their lineup I never saw anyone own, even between their hits. But the Apple-specificness aside, the tech changes sure remind how much the times have changed...

As for TFA, perhaps "nerdy" would make the article work better. I mean, puns and what not are clever, they're nerdy, thoughtful even, but that's not the same thing as "geeky."

Oops. Wrong thread. That's what I get for using a modern tabs-enabled browser... sorry.

Not very geeky, but the "my eye" one was awesome. I can picture someone sitting on the toilet going, "Hmm, that would make an awesome face." Yes, I can picture it because sometimes I am that person.

I don't get the oranges one though. I suspect there's a meme I'm missing?

A geeky act of vandalism would be screwing with the printer so that it didn't print anything and just said "PC LOAD LETTER"
Or making a screenshot of a coworkers desktop, deleting everything on the desktop and minimizing the taskbar at the bottom, then setting the background to the screenshot.

Or waiting until a friend leaves his Facebook account logged in and adjust his settings so no one sees his wall posts until he wonders why all his friends stopped commenting on all his links, pictures, and status updates.

Better yet, set it up so it only updates to his mom.

Peki: I don't get the oranges one though. I suspect there's a meme I'm missing?

I think it's just being pedantic over the warning saying "no signs or other materials." Oranges aren't really a sign (maybe a sign that you're a little too high to be out in public if you're seeing oranges tacked onto utility poles everywhere) or any single material so they're not prohibited by the warning.

There's always the option of adding the logout command to the end of a victim's .login file. Or better yet, just keep adding sleep cycles to it until the guy starts wondering why it takes him five minutes to log in.

...trust me, it was funny in 1990.

Really "witty graffiti" could probably be its own thread - not so much about the nice rendering, but just making good use of existing text or elements. There were a few in TFA, also the stop signs altered to say "stop [something]" as posted upthread are sometimes worth a good laugh.

Near me there is a fairly run down apartment building, someone years ago took the "EFFICIENCY APARTMENTS 555-1212" ad sign on the front fence and just put a big D on it so it said "DEFFICIENCY APARTMENTS," it remained that way for years and was still worth a chuckle or two. The bad handwriting just helped it.

We do.

Won't top the "vandalism" that someone did on the side of the building. Someone spray painted Gaddafi (this was right after his death) onto the side of the building holding a sign that just said "Leeza." It was awesome until the assholes at Faculties Services came and powerwashed it off.

This wasn't it, I'm not going to pour through Facebook to try to find it, but this is probably where they got the idea from. It looked almost exactly like this, but less color.

Add me to the chorus of "Those aren't geeky acts of vandalism."

Geeky acts of vandalism *might* include using the college's brand new color laser printer to print out one's pudgy, cherubic co-worker's face and spending half the afternoon getting it sized perfectly to fit on the life sized cardboard cutout of a soldier the National Guard recruiter left in the student lounge, and then having your coworker wonder why everyone giggles and salutes when he walks by for the next few weeks.

A geeky act of vandalism *might* include using a giant magnet to gauss your monitor so everything appeared tie-dyed, and then having everyone else in the office pretend they see nothing wrong with it to gaslight your clueless pointy-haired boss who will then do double-takes every time he walks past.

A geeky act of vandalism *might* be reprogramming the phone system to repeatedly robocall the guys in the AV department on the data line, which makes their phone ring but there is no way for them to pick up.

A geeky act of vandalism gone wrong might be changing the IO.SYS on a co-workers computer so that DOS gave the message "SMASH any key when ready," and it accidentally gets copied to 200+ computers and causes the intro to DOS teacher to have a shrieking meltdown on the first day of classes.

Not geeky, but amusing in the altered signs category would by a friend who worked at a print shop and ran off a stack of stickers with the letter "P" on it. He then went around a local amusement park changing all the "Thank you for not smoking" signs to "Thank you for pot smoking."

Did that to my mother on April Fool's. Funny watching her click around a bunch, going "WTF???!!" She's one of those older but still hip enough to learn how to reg edit folks who hit a roadblock on a computer and can't figure out alternative ways of getting what they want.

Next year: Bro put an app on the desktop that said "Click this." Then it went to a screen that showed the contents of C:\ and had a prompt: "Do you wish to delete this drive?" You go to click "No," but the app clicks yes. Then you get to watch the hard drive empty before your eyes. Then the screen goes blank. She didn't breathe until the app came back with simple white text "Aren't you glad this is a game?"

Good times, good times.

Along the lines of the lazy "weed" graffiti though - some friends of mine lived in a house with a 1970s-era pool. It wasn't cement, but rather a pool-sized hole dug into the dirt, packed with sand, a metal ring sort of holding the side dirt back to make the wall, and then a vinyl liner applied over it.

They're fairly long lasting, but eventually you gotta replace the liner, which they finally did. They peeled the old liner off to expose the metal lining, upon which someone (previous resident? Random kids?) had spray-painted "Choose Beer."

...which reminds me of a simple but annoying prank: You take a screenshot of a desktop with tons of icons just scattered all OVER the damn thing (possibly including incriminating or embarassing looking files, if you like), save that as an image, and install it as the background image on your annoying coworker's computer. Obviously this works best if you can start your background image creation with the same actual background image your coworker really uses.

Just another variation. The OP hid all the actual icons and replaced them with nothing. This method leaves the original icons but adds fake ones to mess with you.
