$400 MSRP //bought for considerably less in a duty free country
Solar powered (battery lasts for 270 days on a full charge)
Can charge via fluorescent lights (at a considerably slower rate)
Goes into sleep mode if it's in the dark for a long period of time (the hands stop moving, then sweep to the correct time when it detects light)
Automatically sets the time daily via the radio time codes
One notch click to change time zones (the hand sweeps 1 hour per click).
Water resistant to 100m (so you can snorkel in it, but don't scuba)
and best of all, it's not an over-designed gaudy piece of cruft

Meh on sapphire. You know that the glass on grocery store scanners is made of (synthetic) sapphire? And many mid-end watches use sapphire glass?

So, yeah. Big deal.

No kidding. You'd think at 1.65 million it would at least come with VATS and a fat man too..

Coco LaFemme: just that if I say I have a sapphire watch, and the watch isn't blue, people are going to think I'm full of shiat.

Damn, only the face of my watch is sapphire.

/not all sapphire is gemstone quality, but some are good enough that you can cut around the inclusions to produce watch faces.

/OTOH, the watch in the link looks like it would have taken a decent chunk of sapphire.

/white sapphire is more rare than other colors of sapphire, but is less expensive (because when people think sapphire, they think color, go figure :P )

ok, i'm a bit of a watch nerd, but that's just ridiculous. plus, the dial is a mess; how do you even tell time on that thing?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's a conversation starter for use with gold digging bimbos, after which you can tell them how much it cost.

That is precisely what I use mine for. I have to beat the potential nookie off with a stick.

I love how you can barely tell the time on it. I know it's supposed to be encased in sapphire, but I think you would have a hard time convincing anybody of it.

It looks made of cheap plastic IMHO.

2012-01-28 08:03:09 PM
Well, not my cup of tea. Heck, imagine getting it fixed.

I like watches, but for the most part, I'm of a more practical bent, I do own a couple Breitlings and a Speedmaster, but the only way I'd pay 10K for a watch at the moment is if it was solid gold. At this point, I see no reason to own a watch I would not be willing to wear.

2012-01-28 08:04:01 PM
That's not a very good deal. My watch has a sapphire crystal -- in fact I would't buy one without it -- and it was only $300.

2012-01-28 08:09:49 PM
Lsherm: That's hideous. And for 1.65 million, shouldn't you be able to tell what time it is?
Also, it looks cheap, and that's just inexcusable.

red5ish: The images in the article were taken with x-ray photography. This is what the watch looks like to those of us without x-ray vision:

X-Rays do not work that way. If they really were x-ray photos, things like the print would not show up, and it wouldn't be in color.

The design of the watch case is very similar, but there are many details that are different between the article's pictures and your photo. For example, the wrist band is a different style, and the knob in the version you posted has a knurling on it whereas the article photos show a smooth knob. The frame on either side of the "Richard Mille" print is different, too.

The article is about a watch that is made from corundum, which is transparent. Same designer, same manufacturer. Different watches.

Trance750: My $10 K-Mart watch tells the same time as your $1,000,000 Rolex

No, it doesn't.

It's actually going to do a MUCH better job of telling time.

You see, the $10 watch uses a very accurate quartz crystal to keep track of time. The Rolex uses a mechanical escapement mechanism which is FAR less accurate.

But yeah, I gave up on wearing watches years ago. I carry a cell phone, which in addition to its phone and iPod functions, conveniently displays a quite accurate time.

My watches are in a drawer, with long-dead batteries. I don't miss them, wearing a chunk of metal on my wrist was uncomfortable anyway.

If I was to spend $1.65 million on a fugly watch it better double as a time machine...

The casing looks like plastic and the dials look like those of an 80's LCD handheld racing game all piled on top of one another.

You capite censi nobodies wouldn't understand. Anyone can buy beauty. It takes an dickload of class to spend that much on something that ugly.

That plain one is only $1500. There are some that are $50-$100K.

afghanwhiggle: Omega Speedmaster. All a man needs.

Of Omega I have the lunar anniversary and the day/date. The day/date was my daily wear until the pusher fell off after 8 months. Sent it out to be repaired, got it back THREE months later. Two weeks later it developed a lot of condensation inside the case on the crystal. Sent it back to be repaired, got it back FOUR months later after numerous phone calls. Two months later it starts to clunk, rotor seems to be off its spindle and now it only works with manual wind and I'm afraid to wear it because it clunks loudly. Oh, warranty is up, looking at at least $500 bill.

So, for $2,600 I got a piece of trash watch that wasn't made right and some god awful repairmanship that didn't even put it back together properly. Omega has become trash, or so I've been told by the jewelers who discontinued their relationship with the company. They're now just marketing and shoddy work. I'll stick with Rolex.

I will start wearing a watch again when they give me one with a Bluetooth connection to my phone that will show caller ID, appointment reminders from my calendar, and the From and Subject headers of any emails I get, all while having a couple of days of battery life.

Until then, I'll just pull out my phone and look at the damn screen.

I've always wanted a Breitling, but after they stopped making the Chrono Avenger, they really don't make anything that agrees with me. There was always that "fark, paying 4k for a watch" thing too. I almost had palpitations when I paid a grand for my Tag, but my dad always said that Tags are just starter watches (he's a Rolex snob).

Rolex hasn't made anything that I've particularly liked, either.

Exactly right -- it looks like a fancy $20 plastic watch for kids.

I have two friends who are in the wealth bracket where they could buy a thing like this. One, indeed, spends his money on the stupidest, most unimaginative things. The other one generally doesn't spend his money.

Being good at acquiring money does not make one good at spending it, for useful values of "good", but, then, they're very different skillsets.

So.. one murdered his parents and the other just waited for grandma to die.

nburghmatt: olddinosaur: Back when "Marlboro Miles" were still available, they used to give you a Swiss Army watch (real thing, not a copy) for 2100 "Miles," or 425 empty cigarette packs. I used to find the packs everywhere, and redeemed an average of $5000 worth of prizes every year.

I asked this guy what his watch cost; "About $150," he replied.

"Really?" I said, showing him mine, which was near identical. "I've gotten about 28 of these for free, I keep a few for myself and give the rest to all my friends."

He looked a little sick.

if you got 11,900 empty marlboro packs i doubt you were just incidentally finding them.

That is correct, I collected them assiduously. I averaged 55 packs a day for over 12 years, and glommed $60,000 worth of merchandise in that time; most lucrative hobby I ever discovered, and the best part is: I am a nicotine addict in recovery, quit smoking in 1995 and this is my sweet revenge.

I was bragging about this on a FARK thread once, and some dude hit me up for a free $100 wristwatch, didn't even offer to pay postage.

\\\ cheap sucker.

I bought a $10 telephone at Wal Mart which keeps perfect time automatically; went to reset it for daylight savings, found out it did the job itself.

My $90 Garmin GPS keeps perfect time via satellite; my $120 tom-tom has to be set.

I have a $12 digital watch I wear on my belt, if I wear it on my wrist it smashes into things and breaks.

I still feel a little pissed off at myself for all those $100 Marlboro Swiss Army watches I threw away, rather than replace a $8 battery.

neofonz: Have a Citizen Eco-Drive now, and couldn't be happier with it.

I bought an Eco-Drive once for like $165. It lasted about as long as a normal quartz watch with a battery before it died. They don't have a battery, but instead a capacitor which is charged from the solar panel on the watch face. And, the capacitor has a useful life equal to a conventional battery. As it turned out, to get it going again, you can't simply slip in a new capacitor, but basically have to replace the entire movement for about what you paid for the watch. So I tossed it and bought another $3 battery for the old Seiko which works as well as it always has.
