Step 1: Separate religion from government.
Step 2: Don't be dicks.
Have at it.

"He, like many other Libyans who are fearful that their revolution will be compromised, said he would not surrender his weapon until elections, set for June."
Hey look guys, they're almost acting American! :D

A government in complete disarray and a heavily armed population? All they need is some McDonalds, Starbucks and a Walmart or two to complete the transition.

On the other hand, he more than made up for it by shipping them thousands of his self-designed body armor vests, capable of easily and painlessly stopping dozens of AK-47 rounds to the torso at point-blank range.

No one said he designed it himself. And it did knock him out for a while.

Well he did have 30 years' warning to come up with that. He's just lucky they used the AK and not the RPG.
Something to wonder about though: in the original "Twin Pines Mall" timeline, Doc doesn't know the LIbyans are coming but is wary enough bring a Colt handgun. However he forgets to load it. In the "Lone Pine Mall" timeline, Doc knows the Libyans are coming and has his super body armor. But does he still bring the Colt and forget to load it?

What could be wrong? The Ghaddafi gang is out and the gang the West was supporting is in. Right now, we're just waiting for the gangs' leader to emerge, maybe one more supported by Sunni mullahs, and the West will decide whether to do business with him or depose him too. And so it goes.

Or like people who understand when the the issue is unresolvable, those who have guns draw them.

The problem is that while Muslims are good at killing the opposition, they have zero idea what to do once they take over. The situation devolves to random violence and rape, torturing of political opponents, etc. and if a secular government forms, those former "freedom fighters" are all too willing to use their weapons to overthrow it. After all, the objective wasn't freedom, it was imposing radical Sharia law and killing anyone who doesn't like it.
Remind me again why we paid a billion dollars to replace a dictator with radical Muslims who are obviously just as bad or worse.

Clashes between rival militias
The various insurgent groups (tribes) were all bitter enemies before the uprising. They were fighting each other during the uprising. I'm not sure why anyone thought they would work together afterward.

Yeah well, maybe in the late 20th century you can buy plutonium at the nearest corner store, but these days it's hard to come by.
