I find it disappointing that bug sellig and the other owners have determined what is good for fans (an owner who will try to field a competive team, while at the same time making money) is not good for mlb.

/braves fan
//liked have ted as an owner, cuban is a better version of ted
///would hate to see the dodgers go the way of the royals

I was similarly disappointed when Cuban was outlawed from buying the Cubs. I love baseball but the owners and the BWA seem way too pretentious to me.

Bud Selig is going to run his little fiefdom with an iron fist.

farbekrieg: bug sellig and the other owners

I love baseball but hate who runs it. It's an old white boys club completely out of touch with the twenty first century.

2012-01-28 08:43:37 AM
I'd kiss his ass if he'd come buy the Indians.... and the Browns. Cav's are OK - we like Gilbert's brand of crazy there.

2012-01-28 08:52:44 AM
Is there some background on why he would not be allowed to buy a baseball team? He seems like a rather engaged owner of his basketball team.

2012-01-28 08:58:26 AM
I would give anything for Mark Cuban to own the Diamondbacks. Or Suns. Or Cardinals. Or Maulers. Or Fulham.

DarkLancelot: Is there some background on why he would not be allowed to buy a baseball team? He seems like a rather engaged owner of his basketball team.

He speaks his mind about fellow owners and the commissioner, and he has proven he'll fight to win. In baseball, that makes waves. He's called BS more than once on his own league the NBA, and he has sat courtside and taunted refs. Baseball doesn't want any part of that. Baseball is Bushwood, Cuban is Rodney Dangerfield.

It's so stupid that the guy who actually owns a team would be out of the running while two groups led by figureheads are still in the mix.

2012-01-28 09:43:35 AM
Historically, baseball's had some nutjobs running teams; two I can remember were Charlie Finley and Bill Veeck. Selig's old enough to remember what that was like, and it probably scares him. And yes, I say this as a fan of the 1970s Chicago White Sox (Veeck's last hurrah). But neither Veeck's Disco Demolition Night or Charlie Finley's orange baseballs (not to mention suing the commissioner) would fit in the button-down corporate world that MLB is now.

I get it I guess. The guy runs a team in Texas that last year was playing well into June. I don't know that it should matter, but you go deep in the NBA playoffs, you miss a third of baseball season.

He's still exemplary of what baseball needs. Bud can try to keep the sport in 1935 all he wants, change comes on its own at some point.

/And he's all right for an IU grad

What's wrong with Bud Selig? He must be a great guy, he has a statue. Sure it looks like he's asking for money, but still, guys with statues are saints.

The owner of the first place premiere league team has only ever attended a couple matches. $$$$ counts more than presence.

League, I am disappoint.

On the other hand, there is still a flicker of hope for him someday buying the Pirates.

2012-01-28 10:28:44 AM
Sad, but expected. Even setting the conspiracy theories aside, I knew Cuban wasn't going to be it when A) so many bidders sprang up to begin with and B) they estimated the price to go as high as 1.6B. Cubes ain't gonna go for that.

In baseball, there is this fad where the fans blame the owners for not spending enough, because they don't want to accept that baseball is a fundamentally unfair game financially. They think a guy like Cuban will come in and spend out of his pockets, which he has never done and as a businessman will likely never do. The only guy that actually does that is Illitch for the Tigers.

Cuban gets excited about some bad ideas. That sales guy's thing sucked and he didn't get that the only reason Draw Me A Cat briefly worked was because some reddit readers thought it was an ironic gift and a good joke on Groupon. Then the guy is saying he can draw a 1,000 cats a day?

Watching it as we speak, it was 1,000 cats per day.

But on the topic, I personally would like to see Mark Cuban own an MLB team. The Braves would be ideal, but he stated he wanted to own a team that needs a huge turnaround. He likes a challenge.

Imagine if Cuban and gilbert went in 50 50 on the browns. Hell Gilbert owns the cavs, the minor league hockey team, and for his birthday just bought the arena. Football team,he may as well try the pokemon approach on Cleveland team.

The Glazers (TB Buccaneers) own Man U.
Huizenga owned both the Marlins and Florida Panthers while he was still majority owner of the Dolphins.
Paul Allen owns the Seahawks, Trailblazers and Sounders.

I don't know what the actual rule is but yes, NFL does have restrictions on owning other franchises, although soccer teams are exempt thanks to Lamar Hunt. I know Stan Kroenke owns the Rams, Avs, nuggets, and Arsenal because technically his wife or daughter or something owns the Avs and nuggets.

You are making that up - at least when it comes to this baseball fan - and specificly dodger fan.

I think Cuban runs a stable organization and builds teams that get to stay together for a few years in an attempt to accomplish their goal.

Yes you have to spend some money (and the dodgers have already spent on a few key pieces) but its more about strong sensible stewardship.

The Dodgers hired the Blackstone Group to review the bids, and their recommendations were the basis for who advanced. MLB wasn't even a part of the process.

And Cuban, despite how much I wish this weren't true, was not going to win. He's made it clear the way McCourt changed the business structure, what assets may not be sold and the $1 billion + price was not something he felt was a good investment. My guess is the bid was to see if it was as bad as it seems and to keep his name in the running for future franchises.

I think the baseball owners have convinced themselves that if Cuban gets a foot in the door he will try everything to fix the financial model. He's seen what a (admittedly soft) salary cap can do for a sport, and even if he's just one owner, the powers that be in baseball see his admittance as the first potential crack in the dam.

Engaged would be the classic understatement. If Cuban got a MLB team, he'd call out all the roaches and idiots who run their teams like plantation slave holders and upset the old school boys club. Cuban is exactly the kind of owner baseball needs to be successful, which is why he'll never get a team. Selig and the others are farkwits.

My poor Dodgers deserve a smart shrewd owner with deep pockets and a desire to be successful. I wish Frank McCourt would die in that same fiery lawnmower accident along side Selig, take his harpy wife with him for farking up the team.

I'm really happy that Arte Moreno bought the Angels from Disney early last decade. While he's not loud, he definitely puts winning(and fan experience.. first act as owner is to lower beer prices) before profit. Most owners are hundred-millionaires to billionaires, so I find it terrible that many of the owners in the league use revenue sharing to line their pockets. McCourt was ridiculously bad and Selig should have been forced to resign to instilling that Bostonian carpetbagger in one of the greatest sports franchises in America

Mark Cuban turned the Mavericks from one of the biggest jokes of a franchise in the 90s to one of the most consistent playoff teams in NBA history. I wish he could own the Cowboys and Stars as well but that will never happen. I hope he can change another team in another sport, he would turn them around quickly, it only took him a year or two and the Mavs made the playoffs.

2012-01-28 05:03:23 PM
It would be worth it just to see the Rangers Dodgers games. A rare occasion where the crowd would cheer both teams.

/at least I would :(
