I know too much about this mustard museum since I live in Middleton where it is located now. It used to be in the cute, touristy town of Mt. Horeb 30 miles away. It was a perfect fit for that small community because people travelled there anyways to ski, visit the Cave of the Mounds or this other little nordic-themed park. Mt. Horeb even called itself THE MUSTARD CAPITAL OF THE WORLD. Then for no particular reason, some ass-hats decided to move it to Middleton which doesn't really farkin' need a mustard museum.
So a nice community lost one of its jewel touristy features, Middleton got something it doesn't want since some people like me think it should go back to Mt. Horeb where it belongs, and now the new owner isn't even able to make his payments.
And now you know the rest of the story.
/probably should not have mentioned something called Cave of the Mounds on Fark

You know Neil Gaiman had a nice Halloween party there last year? I missed it, but hopefully he'll do something like that again someday. I think he lives an hour or two west of it.

Yeah - it should have stayed in Mt. Horeb. Barry is an interesting character though.
I also liked the old place better - it had more character.

That's because they got greedy and moved from their affordable digs in Mount Horeb. Lured by promises of cheap loans to Middleton, now the loans are due and the location there has not proved to have as much traffic as promised.

It's a decent place run by decent people.
I've done business with them for years at both locations.
It's one of the ONLY places that people who no longer live in the Upper Midwest can get...
The best phreeking brown whole mustard on the phreeking planet (beat Grey Poupon by wide margin in the 2008 World Mustard Competition)...and is the pride of Rock Island, Illinois. If I'm not mistaken, back in the 1960's and early 1970's it was also the standard mustard on hot dogs at Milwaukee County Stadium sold by roaming vendors.
No stores sell it anywhere near where I live now so I have it flown in here via the Mustard Museum.
If I remember right the move from Mt. Horeb to Middleton gave them far more room to not only expand the museum part but also the retail sales part. If Wisconsin doesn't want it there I'm sure there are PLENTY of states that would want it.

I'm not sure what Barry charges, but I have found him to be rather expensive on most items. Sometimes as much as 2X the local store.

Surprised that no one has mentioned the relative proximity to the New Glarus brewery yet. Sure, it might be 30 or 50 miles away, but what's that when you're about to enjoy some of the best beer brewed in the United States?

You're damned right it is. I've tried dozens of styles that Dan Carey brews, and I've only disliked one.

Am I missing something on Google Street View, or is the mustard museum tucked inside some non-descript building marked "Antiques" without any sort of sign on the outside?

Agreed, Middleton is sort of out of the way - Hwy 14 up there gets much less traffic than Hwy 151 around Mt Horeb, or any of the other communities on any other area around Madison.
I live in Verona and actually didn't even realize they had moved. I think the billboards on Hwy 151 North coming from Dodgeville might still say it's in Mt Horeb. Seems like it might have been better for them in the long run to just expand their existing location - or if they wanted more retail to just open a separate retail shop somewhere in Madison either near State St or any of the strip malls on the westside that are already filled with foodie places.

Seriously - he has written lots of good baseball articles and books.
