I like lighthouses. In fact, my 2012 calendar has a picture of a different lighthouse for each month. I could easily cheer for a lighthouse.

I'm a Wichita High School North Redskin class of 1982 graduate.
"Redskin" seems pretty damned racist. I keep waiting for them to change the nickname but they haven't in 30 years. Not that it really matters on way or the other...

I just wouldn't be intimidated knowing I was about to play the lighthouses.

I graduated a Tecumseh Savage. I once went to the grocery store wearing a Savages hoody and a Cleveland Indians hat, honestly not giving any thought to either. My cashier was a Alaska native and commented on them both. He wasn't at all rude or hostile, just pointed it out. I felt like a complete douche and haven't worn either since.

Yeah....I wouldn't sweat it. If he's a Native Alaskan he gets that oil dividend every year. So he's got that going for him.

No we didn't drive them to near extinction...the native Alaskans who don't like being lumped in with the Native Americans. Don't confuse the two. My sister who lives in Nome is married to a Native Alaskan and had 5 kids. I've been doing their taxes for 30 years.......the dividends added up.

Eh, in our district the Spartans, Patriots, and Indians all battle it out every year.
We're equal opportunity racists, so it's all good.
Funny thing was, the local Indian tribe around here was actually quite supportive of the high school, but a bunch of PC folks had the hight school change it to Eagles or something. But the other two were left as is.
Go figure.

Our mascot was some sort of roadrunner, though sometimes there was a wolf.

At night a ship captian sees a light ahead. Tell that vessel we have right of way and move out of our way. The crewman does what he is told and informs the captain the other vessels says No, you move away. The captain gets upset and orders, "tell that guy we are US Navy, move over so we can pass". The reply comes back "No sir, you move". The captain explodes "Tell that sob to move or get run over by a US Navy battleship". The reply comes back, "I am a lighthouse, your choice".

Couldn't they more easily cheer for a lighthouse if it was some form of well-designed high-tech project, like, for instance, if they added a geodesic dome with solar pannels on one side, maybe, and another geodesic dome with an ecological greenhouse for instance on the other side? Not too high domes, so as not to impair the lighthouse's working, maybe 1/4th or 1/5th of the height, to keep a safety margin? Like, ecological?

Unless the teams are making fun of the native american tribes, it's not racist.
As it stands, teams use native american motifs out of pride and the sense that those guys were really badass.
People should stop using that word so damn much. It has started to lose it's original meaning.
Also, what's wrong with redskins? it's not as if we don't already use color names to refer to whites and blacks. And sometimes even brown. But reds is wrong?
ProTip: Saying they're redskins is NOT racist. Racism would be discriminating them for being redskins. That's what most people don't get about what racism entails. It's not acknowledging we're different but judging someone on something as trivial as skin color.

That would make perfect sense. Unfortunately, most Americans don't consider that to be the case. Sports teams are not named after native peoples in an effort to mock them. The names are meant as to inspire courage and toughness for the home team. There are several schools in my home state that are predominantly Native American and use mascots such as "Chiefs", "Warriors" and "Indians". The mascots of the schools are certainly not crude caricatures, they are noble depictions of a romantized race. Then you run into situations like Florida St where the mascot is wholey endorsed by the Native American tribe. This issue is not black and white, you actually have to put some thought into this one. Pointing and screaming racism does not really help in this situation.

Graduated as a Warrior in 1984 and as we say, Once a Warrior, Always a Warrior.
And damned proud of it.
As a descendant of the Cherokee Indians, it does not bother me one bit. I'm proud of my American Indian heritage.
All this "political correctness" that has gone about erasing anything to do with American Indians is just rapidly deleting the culture from the American landscape altogether. And it's sad.
100 years from now, there will be nothing left but a few casinos dotting the landscape that are in name only of a few of the last tribes.
So much for the melding of cultures. It wipes them out.

Oh yeah? One of our county schools is the Sparkman Senators. My school was the Tigers. The Gurley Tigers. lol. School was Madison County HS, but it was located in the tiny town of Gurley, AL. Seen a lot of signs with the Girly Tigers on it. Is that sexist?

Wrong. They are stereotype depictions based on white folks idiotic ideas of the "noble savage". There is nothing respectful in reducing human beings, particularly people of color, into a mascot for a sports team.

Browning, Montana is home of the Blackfeet nation and nearly 100% native. It is also probably the worst place on earth, but that's not the point.
Browning High School is the Indians, with a ridiculous caricature mascot. If they don't care, I don't care.

Yet Chief Wahoo still exists. I really can't understand the double-standard between high-school/college sports and pro teams. My university had to remove a pair of feathers from its logo simply because they were a reference to Indians, and somehow a caricature that's on par with Al Jolson in blackface gets a pass for a professional team.
