How much is that in Rhode Islands?

This is a problem in mma. They use 4 ounce gloves, compared to the 12 ounce gloves of boxing and end up braking their hands quite often.

depends on the puncher, his weight and the hand size

How much is that in slices of lemon wrapped around large gold bricks?

African or European?

Could you frame that as a car metaphor?

Call me a wuss, take my man card....whatever...but this is just what the article says: Human cockfighting....and blocking with the gloves isnt far off.

I appreciate the athletic ability but none of this crap should be legal - MMA, UFC, all that included. I know only a few have died but the long lasting effects it has on these dudes that are either forced into it for money they will never enjoy (or get stolen from them ala Don King) or because they are meatheads to begin with and don't know any better doesn't mean it should be santioned in any form.

Wanna do a fight club in your basement? Fine....pay your own damn medical bills and then be arrested once you're out of the hospital.

Seriously. Do we really need anything more violent than "Armored wankerball" (i.e. the NFL)??? At least there is a point to the game rather than "my goal is to hit this human being so hard that he becomes unconscious!"

Stupid all the way around.

The whole point of heavier gloves in boxing is to be able to land more force-per-punch without breaking your hands. Leads to more brain injuries.

If all fights were bare-knuckled, you'd have many more hand injuries, not so much concussions.

Bobby Gunn is the guy who challenged Tank Abbott to a match for the bareknuckle championship last year. So if you know who Tank is and what his level of athleticism is like these days, that should give you a good feel for how prestigious that championship is.

How many Dominatrixes are able to swing a 12 pound padded wooden mallet and how many submissives would be able to take that kind of pounding?

Less bare knuckle fighting; more moose knuckle fighting, I say.

I'd rather have a broken hand than a brain injury.

Nuno311: it really is idiotic when you think about it though

Humans are a violent race. A lot of these people that get into professional fighting don't do so because they don't feel like they have any other option, they do it because they have violent tendencies and it comes natural to them. You could outlaw it, sure, but it wouldn't stop it from happening. It would just go underground where there wouldn't be any safety regulations and the pay wouldn't be as good. You'd also have people refuse to seek medical treatment for serious injuries for fear of being arrested for illegal fighting. Then you have the issue of the fighters that don't go underground. Without their outlet for violence, do you think their aggressive tendencies are going to just go away? Take Mike Tyson, for example. A troubled individual and a natural born fighter. If he hadn't gone into boxing when he was young, lord knows what kind of trouble he'd have gotten into. He most certainly be in jail, probably for beating someone to death in a bar fight, or a street fight.

"A full-force punch to the head..."

Yet somehow Subby's wife still begs me to do it.

The documentary Knuckle mentioned in the article is pretty good. It's not what I would call prime time weekend entertainment, but good enough to make it into the Sundance Festival in 2011.

Well they need to train better if they do.

Build up a tolerance by hitting thicker and more sturdy objects. The bones in your knuckles get microfractures (similar to microtears in muscles) and also deadens the nerve endings... all in all leading to awesomely powerful hands that won't break in two when it encounters bone.

I'll take bare-knuckle boxing over gloves any day of the week. :-)

That's what muay thai fighters do with their shin bones. I'm not sure how it would work with the small bones in your hands that are used to move your fingers.

If only there had been an article linked to this thread that contained that kind of insight.

"Around 1955, Rocky Marciano had his punch measured at a USA military installation, where it is believed that the test was conducted on a ballistic pendulum. Rocky achieved a score of 925 foot-pounds whilst wearing a 12oz. boxing glove. Those who witnessed the test could hardly believe what they had seen."

Science.ca, John Jones, an engineering science professor at Simon Fraser University, calculates that the total energy of a punch (in this case a karate punch) can be measured at anywhere between 100-450 Joules. Rocky Marciano's best punch was reported to reach 1028 Joules.

In 1948, rocket scientists in the Soviet Union measured Rocky Marciano's best punch at 7548 killiVoltz - ten times stronger than the power of a hippo's clenching jaw.

I thought the first rule of bare knuckle boxing was that you don't talk about bare knuckle boxing.

A pro boxer throwing a good punch is like a major league pitcher throwing a 100mph+ fast ball. You're using pretty much your entire body. Krotty punches are just arm punches

take the gloves off, if you want to go for that KO, don't miss or it could end your hand... more fights would be body shots and takedowns... fights would be incredibly slow and boring though...
