FTFA: The Daily Beast, however, points out that the report only addressed socially conservative beliefs and not the whole spectrum of political and economic values of the right.

Yeah, good thing we're not in a two party system where beliefs about social issues have taken over the political discussion or something...

The GOP figured this out back in the 70s and at first they were using social conservatism to pick up the extra votes they needed; now it's using them.

If you make people think they're thinking, they'll love you.

If you make people actually think, they'll hate you.

Go figure.

Libs go trolling and call it "science" again.

The Bell Curve was racist and hate-filled. This study is, without a doubt, "indisputable science".

Nearly every post by a conservative so far in this thread only proves the article's claim. Most of them that come after this comment will too. Keep swinging for the fences!

Thing is - it wasn't always like that. Conservative philosophy is based on the works of some very smart people (and I say this as a avowed liberal) - people like HL Mencken, Ludwig von Mises, Francis Neilson, William F. Buckley Jr., , Russell Kirk, et al.. I may not agree with much of what they've written, but I'd love to have dinner and conversation with any of them and they would have formidable arguments if called upon to defend their beliefs.

I couldn't say the same thing about people like Krauthammer or Ann Coulter.

Here is the origin of their conservative philosophies:

Antivax cuts across the political spectrum. Some do it because they fear what is "unnatural", others because they don't like the government telling them what to do.

Another shred of evidence in favor of the study's findings.

It's amusing to me how social conservatives here, in the U.S., can readily spot the relation between ignorance, lack of education and/or low intelligence and how other cultures tend toward social conservatism but are completely incapable of spotting that relation in their own lives.

2012-01-27 07:46:40 PM
I like how the article includes a pic of Dan Whitney, who affects a fake-ass accent, used to wear pleated khakis while telling bad jokes about his grandmother. Good for him; he found his niche. He's the Kenny G of comedy.

/although Ken Gorelick was pretty OK when he was playing with Jeff Lorber.

badhatharry: Seems legit. Liberal academics would never allow political bias to affect the results of their research..

Well, we are talking the reasons behind social conservative stances.

Take abortion for example.

Lots of people really hate abortion. A smart way of addressing this and decreasing the abortion rate is to increase the availability of birth control, as well as sexual education classes.

Unfortunately, if the response of the Republicans in Congress and the support they receive is any measure, the general way social conservatives want to address this is by banning abortion, and decreasing the availability of birth control and women's health services.

It is mind bogglingly and pants on head retarded to try and decrease demand for a service by taking actions that increase demand for said service, as well as pushing that service underground through prohibition.

"in your own best interest" != selfish. Selfish is often also not in your best interest, because it's incredibly short-sighted.
