It shouldn't take a rocket scientist to know you had to lower the river.

EnviroDude: It shouldn't take a rocket scientist to know you had to lower the river.

Incidentally, the ship was carrying rockets:
A further update from the [United Launch Alliance] says the vessel was hauling an Atlas 5 rocket first stage and Centaur upper stage for the Air Force's Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF-2) mission scheduled to launch in April and an interstage adapter for NASA's Radiation Belt Storm Probes (RBSP) mission scheduled to launch in August.

Not all of us have seen it.

It's weird though, it's almost as if equipment existed to measure the bridge and the size of the ship and cargo but hey, I'm not an engineer.

from Decatur, Ala., to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

The ship was traveling on the Tennessee River on its typical route to Florida's Atlantic coast

I think I need a geography lesson, because that doesn't make any sense to me.

I can tell you, that bridge is he scariest farking thing in the world. I always wondered what would happen if you were going up one side, towing a boat, while someone else came up the other side, towing a boat, and you met in the middle.

I guess now we won't have to find out, hopefully, because that bridge will be sent to hell and replaced. But, knowing he Commonwealth, I'm sure it'll be patched as quickly and cheaply as Marshall County labor will allow. Sigh.

So the Italian cruise ship captain got a new job it seems.

Rocket parts, eh? We're fighting them over here so we don't have to fight them over there.

That is one tough boat.

Let's hope they don't have to dip into the Noah's Ark Park fund for the repair money.

So go read it then, holy shiat how lazy are you that you have to have stories repeated to you because you can't be bothered to read it the first time.

FTA: Two spans of the Eggner Ferry Bridge at US 68 and Kentucky 80 were destroyed Thursday night by the Delta Mariner, which was too tall to pass beneath the structure.

Also FTA: The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating the collision. And it's too early to speculate on exactly what caused the wreck until that probe is done, said Sam Sacco, a spokesman for ship owner and operator Foss Marine.

Now...I'm no rocket surgeon....but I think maybe, just MAYBE, the whole "Ship being taller than the bridge" thing might be a contributing factor. Just maybe. But what do I know. I voted for Bush.

Rivers flow downhill. Practically all water between the Appalachians and the Rockies flows to the Mississippi, connecting to the gulf, and then the Atlantic.

It's far from the shortest route, but the tolls are a lot cheaper than using I-95.

Decatur, Al sits on the Tenn river. That and the Cumberland are both dammed just north of the bridge, creating KY and Barkley lakes. Lakes are connected by a canal. Once on the Cumberland it's down to Nashville and parts beyond. Seems roundabout but I guess there's nothing big enough to float a ship that size that's more direct.
