It is both unsurprising and appalling that people would loudly cheer a candidate (and party platform) that demonizes higher education. Especially when nearly all of the people running said party graduated from the same "elite brainwashing institutions" that they slam every day.

2012-01-27 02:22:02 PM
Educated people tend to be liberals.

/To the RomeroCopter!

2012-01-27 02:26:12 PM
Obviously then, we need more cuts to education

/this coming from a man who is immune to brainwashing by dint of his lack of brains

You know, if you punched Frothy in the balls there isn't a jury in the world that would convict you.

So there aren't any kids at your church, Rick?

Grand_Moff_Joseph: Especially when nearly all of the people running said party graduated from the same "elite brainwashing institutions" that they slam every day.

The people who are cheering it don't know that and won't research it themselves.

exick: So there aren't any kids at your church, Rick?

Taking your kids to church is definitely 100% NOT indoctrination. It's simply exposing them to The Truth ®

2012-01-27 02:48:46 PM
So his kids didn't benefit from public education funds at all right? Oh wait yeah he was ripping off the local district while his kids didnt even live in PA anymore.

2012-01-27 02:59:14 PM
Of course that's his reason. It couldn't possibly have anything to do with making them employable and competitive with their peers globally. That would make too much sense, and as a result I'm suspicious.

2012-01-27 02:59:15 PM
yeah Rick you tell em Buddy. They should all be sent to Jesus Camp where they can be deprogrammed.

NPR replayed Santorum saying this and I nearly vomited. I was a HS teacher in Baton Rouge in the mid-90s and the pushback against a "liberal agenda" was incredible (I was there shortly after the "Rainbow Curriculum" was merely suggested and the hate spewed by some people would make you weep). I don't even want to imagine what it's like there now.

No wonder our kids are morons, look at the BS that they have to memorize for a test (then quickly forget).

It was a small load, though.

Don't forget, kids, it's called "The Tree of Knowledge" in The Bible -- and to religious nutjobs, that's a very, very bad thing.

Our kids are not morons. It's the adults who think kids should learn nothing but reading and writing and arithmetic without using critical thinking, learning about aesthetics, understanding philosophies or having multiple references in history.

How dare our children be educated enough to lead anything?

I guess we shouldn't be so hard on Santorum since he's doomed to slip back into the nether regions of obscurity very soon

2012-01-27 04:25:28 PM
My parents and my parents parents were dedicated to seeing their kids get a better education than they ever had. They saw it as a prerequisite to a better life.

These folks who are so determined to avoid educating their kids, ruin the educational system we have, and demonize those who have intellectual credentials begs the question: "What kind of America are they planning on one hundred years from now?"

I can never get over how similar US conservatives are to Muslim conservatives. Witness this desire to take the country backwards 50-100 years, keep the populace dumb, and infuse more and more religion into school and politics.

I think the lousy success rate of this approach is pretty well demonstrated.

2012-01-27 04:28:00 PM
We know the Republicans are anti-intellectual, but this takes it to a new level. I think the bigger surprise here is how suddenly, Obama invented the idea of compulsory education.

I for one am heartened that Santorum was of such strong character that he could make it through four years at Pennsylvania State University without becoming indoctrinated into "left-wing ideology." And the University of Pittsburgh. And the Dickinson School of Law.

Now, the most awesome thing would be if he went on either a government loan or a scholarship, since he apparently thinks both should be abolished.

Nope. Hypocrites here too. They are only 'anti-intellectual' for the ideas they oppose. They are more than happy to embrace, push and advertise their own intellectuals as a point of pride, as Dr. Newt Gingrich, Dr. James Dobson, and Dr. Thomas Sowell demonstrate. They're "educated" with true knowledge, you're "indoctrinated" with false consciousness. Its very crypto-Marxist.

That was POLITICAL SCIENCE not JESUS KILLING SCIENCE...

To be fair, the Jesuits would have a field day with explaining "President Santorum"...

Mugato: Can the republicans be any more farking transparent?

Once you've got such a huge number of people believing the president's a fraud - or even worse, that he secretly hates the country and wants to see it destroyed - convincing them of this piddly little shiat is a simple matter.

This is a prime example of why we think you've detached from reality, GOP.

Everyone does a form of that with information that has no practical use for them. The important thing is to having the skills to be able to look it up.

They're just opening a direct, trans-earth-core trade route to China. Build a vacuum tunnel, and you have shipping from Shenzhen to Sheboygan in under an hour. Quite a capital investment to be sure, but think of the long-term savings!

Not coincidentally, this is also why the first woman is space was important.

But I've said too much already.

Why put the part about "first-generation college students" and a generalization about them not getting the point of college education in? S/he may be decrying religious bigotry but s/he is displaying classism with that comment. Kind of sours the whole point.

WTF?!

Well, one of the first steps of a totalitarianism is to turn the people against education and the educated so they can be purged and not stand in your way of the power grab. Clearly, the same would apply to a Santorum Theocracy.

If they were, they'd be learning something.

Look it up and contextualize it. The second part is more important.
