Cool. I saw an article about this recently from Stephen O'Meare in Astronomy Magazine. For those who would like to know more about making your own, checkout "Simply Scintillating" in the December 2011 issue.

Very nice. I just went out and tried it and got decent results hand held. Have to try it on a tripod.

What amazes me is how many people mistake Sirius for a UFO. Even more than Venus in my experience.

Every winter without fail I run into people who are convinced that they are seeing some strange UFO hovering in the sky. I have had phone calls, e-mails, etc. from people who can not be convinced it is a star. I have even went so far as to get out a star chart and show them Sirius, some can not be convinced even when confronted with the evidence. Yeah whatever dude...
