Are there a lot of federal contractors on Fark?

CTO and CIO

Both gone.
Shows you the level of clusterf*ck for IT and technology

Take it from someone who's seen all levels and most depts.
I've met both while at OMB/EOP...nice guys, very intelligent.

NOT an easy job.
The contractors are running the show, execution and implementation, gunning for the money & disorganized.
Most govt staff are static, narrow-minded and not trained up-to-date.

It's a tangled web...a messy soup with too many cooks.

Indeed. One of the reasons I feel so very safe is the quality and professionalism of CSC, GDIT, SAIC, Booz Allen, etc.

IBM had the best front line PMs.
CSC were the best at screwing their subs.
Booz Allen should have been writing The X Files, not RFPs.

' "As the federal government's first Chief Technology Officer, Aneesh Chopra did groundbreaking work to bring our government into the 21st century," '

Umm, I'm pretty sure there was nothing he could have done to prevent the government from entering the 21st century.

And I'm pretty sure all the real technology development in the Government is in DARPA and IARPA. This guy didn't really have a job to begin with.

I'm often surprised, but yes.

BAH is a buncha overpriced, underqualified stuffed suits, if you ask me.

TASC is probably one of the better ones out there.

No. When a majority of Fed end users are still on IEv6 as of 2010 and you have to get all the web apps upgraded or replaced for security it is dragging them into the present century.

This isn't about tech development, it's about standards and practices.

So is security the problem, or the goal? I'd say it's both.

It took the DOD forever to get past Windows NT, and then within a relatively short period of time, they've migrated through the versions to Win7, Office 2010 and IE8 on most of their unclassified networks. But, they've worked very closely (and paid for it) with MS to get special versions of Windows in the process.

I don't really have any insight into the rest of the Fedgov IT stuff, but I'm surprised it lags that far behind....

/And I thought the DOD accreditation process was byzantine.

Wasn't he involved in some contracting/outsourcing shenanigans when he worked for the city of DC?

I'm one. Fortunatly DOE finally dumped Windows 2000 and IE6 last year. I was pleasantly supprised to see them move to Exchange 2010 at the beginning of the year, and there is great talk of moving to Windows 7

(Wouldn't mind seeing newer computers either. Work off an Optiplex GX 270 when I'm down there (3.0GHz P4HT, 2GB RAM, WinXP))

CTO = Chief Technology Officer. What his job is or was supposed to be, I don't know. As for Federal agencies being behind or out of date, there was one document from a Federal agency I used as a reference item and had to find a Word Perfect font set for it to render and print correctly in Acrobat.

/used to use WP, too. Until our outfit changed to Office, back about 1996.

The Weeners surprised me (DC Feds). Spoke well of the fellow while also giving constructive criticism. If that's that guys idea of 'mudslinging', I'd say we need more of it.

I remember WP, maybe I can be the Fed CTO?

CIO - Chief Information Officer
The top person in charge of all the company's IT, computer, networks, etc.

CTO
Chief Technology Officer
The top person in charge of inventing, developing and executing actual tech.

One supports business internally - administration
Other creates products for clients - scientist for example

There may be some overlap.

Most companies, if they have either, will have a CIO.
