As much as the State of the Union was a bunch of flag-waving, war mongering, centrist bullshiat; the GOP response was just a long list of moronic oversimplification and flat-out lies.

You see, you give the wealthy and corporations more money, the money "trickles down", and jobs are created magically out of thin air, regardless of demand or consumer finances!!!

I know they'd probably be fired in an instant, but I would love to see some reporter with a spine actually cut one of these farks off mid-sentence and ask what plan do they have that will fix the problem. And if they start talking about tax cuts, cut them off again and ask what rational plan they have for creating jobs.

Steve Jobs endores Obama for president in 2008, supported same-sex marriage and believed in man-made global warming. I would appreciate it if the GOP would stop throwing his name out there like he was some sort of conservative titan. He made his money selling products, not gutting companies or gambling on the financial markets.

2012-01-27 02:09:12 PM
Why can't that work come home? Obama asked.

Jobs' reply was unambiguous. "Those jobs aren't coming back," he said, according to another dinner guest.

That's not an actual answer.

The president's question touched upon a central conviction at Apple. It isn't just that workers are cheaper abroad. Rather, Apple's executives believe the vast scale of overseas factories as well as the flexibility, diligence and industrial skills of foreign workers have so outpaced their U.S. counterparts that "Made in the USA" is no longer a viable option for most Apple products.

So let's break this down:

1) Chinese workers are more "flexible." Like...acrobat flexible or...work 18 hours a day / 6 days a week / never take vacations flexible?

2) Chinese workers are more "diligent." I think that translates into "we don't need to give them bathroom and lunch breaks."

3) Chinese workers have outpaced the industrial skills of their American counterparts.

Okay, you farkers, now you're gone TOO GODDAMN FAR. I TAKE UMBRAGE ON THAT COMMENT. GOOD DAY, SIR. I SAID GOOD DAY.

Mitch Daniels: He was a job creator (in really small voice when no one is listening) for the Chinese.

Obviously, we need to bring back the Waltham-Lowell System and eliminate the minimum wage. If we had workers pulling 16 hour days and forced to live in on-site barracks with no recourse for dangerous conditions and no other feasible options to earn a living, we, too, could compete with China.

This is unprecedented. Usually they offer constructive criticisms with the goal of good policy that benefits the country.

OK, let's differentiate between full-time employees and contract workers. If I'm not mistaken, most of Apple's business in other countries is done via contract work. Contract workers do not work for Apple, are not hired by Apple, and are not directly paid any wages or benefits by Apple.

They're paying a foreign company to do work for them. It's not the same thing.

don't forget we have to get rid of the 1st amendment too, and then outlaw unions. Oh, and of course crushing political dissent - can't have the plebs getting uppity and organizing a strike.

THEN we can 'compete' with china!

Well, we would need a bunch of midlevel engineers willing to take a 75% pay cut, for starters. And the US government would need to agree to finance new factories just in case some other company from another country possibly gave them a contract.

However, on general principles, I don't really have a problem with foreign-made products. If they sell for less here, that means people here spend less money on them, raising their standard of living. And for the Chinese workers, working in an iPhone factory beats half-starving to death toiling on some collective farm in the countryside.

2wolves: Cutting through all the pro/con Apple twatwaffle that is sure to accumulate how about Mr. Daniel's show us the GOP jobs program?

Since I'm too lazy to type it out again, I'm copying and pasting the GOP jobs program to this thread.

The GOP's plan to fix the economy:

Child Labor - Newt Gingrich
Reduced Regulation - Everyone
Eliminate minimum wage or drastically reduce the minimum wage - Bachmann (and others)
Remove all heath and wellness requirements (Obamacare, etc) - Everyone
Extend working hours - Paul LePage (and others)
Remove environmental protections - most of the party.
Reduction of educational funding for the poorest areas (replace with "vouchers" that the poorest can't afford) - many in the party.
Repeal Habeas Corpus - most of the party... and Obama thanks to things like the Patriot Act.

If all of these great ideas go through as proposed, we will be on equal footing with China.

Allow people starting at the age of 14 to work 10 hour a day 6 days a week at $3 per hour and with benefits or health care. This way America will finally be able to return jobs to Americans by allowing us to compete with China's lax policies and almost non-existent human wellness and protection programs.

The GOPs plan to bring jobs back to America would definitely work. There's no doubt about that. It's just that American's will need to sacrifice some of the protections and freedom that they enjoy currently.

2012-01-27 02:23:19 PM
That's an impressive level of business-illiteracy for someone claiming the "party of business" mantle. Jobs wasn't secretly outsourcing tech jobs and continually downsizing US employees, it's the single thing that his company is most famous for.

Seriously, if you bring up Apple in a conversation about business the word "outsourcing" is going to come up in the next sentence. Seriously, it probably beats out both "iPod" and "Mac" as the inevitable follow-up.

Goddamn it, it's bad enough I live in this state and have to listen about this disingenuous shiatbag using state money to lobby for pet projects that ultimately harm this state, stump for felons in state elections, host fire sales of state assets to corporations who lobbied for him, bust unions, throw education in the toilet, and act like a general tool. Even worse he does all that above shiat to thunderous applause from this state's derp brigade (otherwise known as Indiana residents).

Can I please at least listen to national politics without this particular disingenuous shiatbag stinking up the political discourse? We already have more than enough disingenuous shiatbags there, thanks very much.

Cheap labor is one thing, but a big part of the reason companies go with China is their incredibly flexible and reliable supply chain capabilities.

--

In part, Asia was attractive because the semiskilled workers there were cheaper. But that wasn't driving Apple. For technology companies, the cost of labor is minimal compared with the expense of buying parts and managing supply chains that bring together components and services from hundreds of companies.

For Mr. Cook, the focus on Asia "came down to two things," said one former high-ranking Apple executive. Factories in Asia "can scale up and down faster" and "Asian supply chains have surpassed what's in the U.S." The result is that "we can't compete at this point," the executive said.

...

"The entire supply chain is in China now," said another former high-ranking Apple executive. "You need a thousand rubber gaskets? That's the factory next door. You need a million screws? That factory is a block away. You need that screw made a little bit different? It will take three hours."

He also said something about rendering unto Caesar that which is Caesar's, and rendering unto God that which is God's. So, there's that about bringing religious dictates into politics (and it was used for a long time to justify the separation of church and state, and for Christians to no mix religion and politics).

Absolutely. And all those factories in China came about because American businesses wanted to save as much money as possible, so they closed down the factories in America and China picked up the demand.

Not for long, esp. when they get shut out of the domestic Chinese market by native firms and political protectionism.
