Better find him before Phish gets in town.

2012-01-27 10:38:04 AM
I never forget a face, and I haven't seen the kid.

2012-01-27 10:40:36 AM
Yes, I've seen him, but it's been a while. He was in a movie
with a lot of cheesy stop motion effects.

"Ian Burnet's brother, Jamie Burnet, said his brother allegedly had attempted suicide before."

He's in the river

Hipchewy1: "Ian Burnet's brother, Jamie Burnet, said his brother allegedly had attempted suicide before."

Thanks, brap.

His dad just sent out an e-mail saying that the family remains positive in their search, but also refers to the loss of his son. The kid may well be in the river, but any clues on where to search would be helpful. The dad is a really good person, the kind who looks at your face when he asks how you're doing, and listens to the answer.

I'll keep an eye out, in case he is between 52nd and Madison and 42nd and 8th.

2012-01-27 11:04:00 AM
So, wait.

From Harlem, "all the way north" to Columbia?

/fine police work there, Lou

2012-01-27 11:08:35 AM
I'm too far north of the city to be of help, but I can offer some words of hope: A friend of the family, 13, went missing a few months ago. He turned up safe and sound a few days later.

So I'll wish your friend equally good news.

2012-01-27 11:16:39 AM
When this hits the mainpage, will non-TFers be able to participate? Even dare say the non-NYC TFers?

2012-01-27 11:17:57 AM
Here's hoping he's just being 22 and having some kind of crazy, farked up adventure.

2012-01-27 11:26:21 AM
Previous attempts at suicide + disappearing in a city of over ten million + more than two weeks gone likely = history. I'm sorry for the family, this has been getting a lot of play in the Richmond media. I hope they find the kid either way for closure purposes.

Agreed. I hope he's sleeping one off somewhere...

Without an iPhone?
Not likely.

2012-01-27 11:44:16 AM
Kid?

2012-01-27 11:44:24 AM
Best of luck... I hope he's found safe

2012-01-27 11:44:58 AM
talk about finding a specific grain of sand on the beach... but hopefully it is a good ending.

2012-01-27 11:45:52 AM
I was expecting to read something about a six year old or something. This "kid" is 22. Sorry to sound like a realist, but sounds like he is fish food or just doesn't want to be found.

2012-01-27 11:46:05 AM
This is Fark. You're supposed to setup some sort of suspect charity to "raise awareness" and solicit donations to your PayPal account.

unremarkable asterisk: Hipchewy1: He's in the river

Feeding fish?

/Sorry. Hope this ends well.

Not to be an ass, but that isn't that helpful of a picture.

2012-01-27 11:51:35 AM
I wish for a happy ending to this story. It doesn't appear likely though.

People do disappear, sometimes, without contacting their families. Or he could be seriously mentally ill (to an extent where he's disconnected from reality) or injured or just in a gutter somewhere. Neither of those are very good options, but there's a chance he's around.

Hope they find the guy, whatever happened.

Start at the bottom. They usually don't float for a few days.
Sorry for your loss.

2012-01-27 11:52:29 AM
Lost kid recently sure gets a lot more attention than 22 year old man with suicidal past missing for 4 weeks doesn't it?

I mean hey, I hope for the best and all but it's time to get real. He's an adult choosing not to be in contact with the world or alternatively he's toast. If it were my kid, hell yeah I'd search high and low for him. But I don't know why the media and the police are paying any attention.

2012-01-27 11:52:33 AM
Walker: Kid?

he's somebody's son and 22 can be pretty damn young; I know what you're getting at but kid is fine here

/hoping he's on a NY debauchery tour
//not holding my breath

2012-01-27 11:52:49 AM
I wish the best to his family and hope that he turns up on the tail end of a bender. Stay positive, and good luck.

2012-01-27 11:53:00 AM
Hopefully it's just one of those "cut an run" panic episodes that overwhelmed college kids sometimes get...maybe check Canada?

LineNoise: Better find him before Phish gets in town.

I couldn't help but laugh at this. Thanks LineNoise.

On a serious note, it sucks when something like this goes down. Best friends mother disappeared for a week. Found her in a lake. She went on the bender of all benders and then just passed out in the lake.

History of depression, past attempts, etc... etc.. etc.. I wish the best for the family but it doesn't look that good.

2012-01-27 12:02:09 PM
Don't end up in a roadside ditch...

2012-01-27 12:05:29 PM
This is so sad. I'm on Long Island but we're a train ride away from NYC and I'm out there all the time... will keep my eyes open just in case. (Depression seems to love beaches and we got a ton of them out this way.)

Good news: He's safe, and touring with Def Leppard

Bad news, well...

I doubt I can help here in Louisiana but I can maybe offer a little hope. My aunt disappeared for a couple of weeks some years back. For various and sundry reasons we feared she would be found dead in a ditch but she turned up alive and, 12 years later, is still alive and doing pretty well, all things considered. There is hope that young Mr. Burnet will be found alive.

2012-01-27 12:08:50 PM
I'm assuming they've checked Bellevue already? That's where a lot of missing people in NYC end up. But after two weeks... yeah, I wish the family all the best. That's truly heartbreaking, I can only imagine what they must be going through.

2012-01-27 12:10:32 PM
Kid? He's over 21 for Christ-sakes. NYPD wouldn't even search for him otherwise but it sounds like they put him over as a special category missing with a suicidal history. With no foul play suspected, either he doesn't want to be found or he committed suicide.

2012-01-27 12:15:50 PM
Hipchewy1: "Ian Burnet's brother, Jamie Burnet, said his brother allegedly had attempted suicide before."

Yeah, until that sentence I was thinking he might have partied a bit hard and was hidden away with a chick he met at some party.
And then, it was...ah, shiat.

But I hope he's a bit down and just went on a walkabout/ or shacked up with a chick.

2012-01-27 12:17:49 PM
Sadly, he either killed himself or doesn't want to be found.

A random mugger or something wouldn't have bothered to hide the body.

2012-01-27 12:19:31 PM
Maybe he is on a tour of Canada.

It happened at my college when I was there, a kid went missing and didn't pack anything. They found him two weeks later trying to cross the border to get back on the other side of the country.

2012-01-27 12:24:12 PM
GungFu: But I hope he's a bit down and just went on a walkabout/ or shacked up with a chick.

Perhaps he just popped in for a visit to the Castle Anthrax

2012-01-27 12:26:15 PM
Maybe he got a job on Broadway.

2012-01-27 12:30:47 PM
This reminds me of when the son of Walter "Chekov" Koenig disappeared and they put on a search for him in Vancouver. He was eventually found hanged in Stanley Park. Apparently he'd also had a psych history.

2012-01-27 12:32:43 PM
depression and mental illness carry an unfair stigmata in our society. many people have to work through a dark or difficult time in their private life, and there are reasons these things come to be.
this does not mean the person did not rebound just fine and is doing quite well. it's a easy cop-out (no pun intended) for LEO's to shirk some work. bullshiat.

i hope the lad is knee-deep in a sex thing with some foreign exchange students and a five gallon tin of Crisco.

2012-01-27 12:33:05 PM
"this kid" he is 22...I do not think this qualifies as an amber alert.

2012-01-27 12:33:13 PM
I'll keep an eye out in the bronx.

2012-01-27 12:36:40 PM
I'll keep a look out for him and I hope he's ok.

It's really sad that I see more and more young people that seem so lost on NYC streets lately... runaways and people coming to the city to find themselves only to have the city crush them.
/I saw a girl the other day sitting down on the curb between 6th and 7th ave near Macy's crying her eyes out, couldn't be more than 17 or so. I gave her a few bucks and told her to seek help..really farking sad

atomicmask: "this kid" he is 22...I do not think this qualifies as an amber alert.

Not Amber Alert material but 22 is young.

/and yes, I am old.

Subby, best wishes that your coworker's son is found safe.

I have friend whose mother has disappeared like this. Turns out she just checked herself into a mental hospital without telling anyone. Finding that out, though, with patient privacy laws, was a real chore.

I'm 58. He's a kid to me. And to his mom and dad. Sorry for not being more clear in the headline. I didn't expect a greenlight.

Thanks to all who have offered kind words, and to those looking out for Ian.

Good luck to your friend. Saw the missing persons flier in the subway the other day. Hope he turns up exhausted from a few week bender in NYC but none the worse for the wear.

any other NYC farkers notice it said they posted fliers "from harlem all the way up to columbia university"?
