Twitter believes in limitless free expression and stands by those who risk their lives to fight oppression, and it wants you to remember that while it deletes any of their Tweets that might offend thin-skinned regimes, dictators, or despots

There are always limits on speech, one way or another. Not that I'm defending Twitter's actions of course.

I don't get why these articles even exist. Twitter does not have to abide by free speech laws because they are a private company. They can delete whatever tweets they want. Same with Facebook, MySpace, Google+, etc. Their services, their rules.

Some people get upset when companies willingly comply with oppressive regimes to increase profits. Remember the outrage when Google willingly filtered results for China?

Better to delete
some
tweets than to be banned entirely, from both a business and social perspective.

Ladies and gentlemen, if you have not already come to this realization, I'm sorry to announce that the Revolution will NOT be Twitter-vised
The revolution will not be Twitter-vised
The revolution will not be brought to you by Go-Daddy
In 140 characters without banner-ad interruptions.
There was a time when the web was first forming, when the internet operated on a non-commerical ethos, that all of us online patted ourselves on the back for being part of the greatest force for freedom the world have ever known. No government, no repressive reigme could ever control this wild and democratic thing because it was international, beyond the reach of any one government to stifle.
That was before the Corporations took over, and monetized the web. Before we realized they would ALWAYS put thier own bottom lines, and the interests of their shareholders above any basic system of values or morality. Before we realized that governments would HAVE to censor the web because corporations would only be too happy to do it for them.

I have seen some people use that as the single reason Google is evil, as evil as 90's Microsoft.
But they are idiots I admit. Or redditors but then is there a difference?

Yea, you'd think people would be more concerned with Google violating privacy laws in various countries instead of helping the CCP censor information.

So maybe use the internet without using all the corporate sites and infrastructure so they can't tell you what to do? Nobody is forcing you to use Google to find your webpages, or Amazon to buy your stuff.

No one is saying Twitter is violating the Constitution. But they are helping some pretty evil regimes censor their citizens' speech. And they're profiting from it. Pretty despicable, if you ask me.

Maybe. But not the venture capitalists. Or the people in the countries affected, for that matter.

One doesn't have to be a potty mouth to appreciate freedom of speech.
