Makes sense. In the olden days tribes used to kill mammoths for food, and elephants aren't much different than mammoths.

I always wonder who was the first to look at something and go "let's eat that."
I guess I just look towards Thailand.

that 4 minute single shot scene going up the spiral staircase was pretty awesome. apparently it took a couple of takes. but it was one of the greatest action sequences in film history.
they would have made it longer, but that was the longest single strip of film that they could have in the camera. or something.

If an animal is endangered, eating them or grinding up their parts for medicine grants magical healing powers.

DNRTFA, but I brought some elephant biltong (jerky) back from my honeymoon in South Africa.
We chatted to a couple of gamekeepers/rangers about elephants, especially the elephants in the Kruger National Park. They said that there were far too many elephants and the area just couldn't sustain them because elephants like to do things like knock over trees which allows the soil to erode, leaving nothing for any of the herbivores to eat.
They were a bit stuck really because there was such a complete taboo on killing elephants due to negative publicity, but they had to do large culls in order to keep the park sustainable. Nobody else wanted the elephants and it wasn't practical to transport them anywhere else anyway in sufficient numbers. So essentially they were culling them anyway and not able to do very much with the meat. They wanted to build a biltong factory nearby, but I don't know if they ever did.

I once heard someone say "the best way to save an endangered species would be to put it on the menu in America"
Maybe that's what we should do then we could have elephant farms all across America, if you wanted a pet elephant you could just run down to the local stock yard and buy one for 50 cents a pound.
Of course a herd of elephants would be to much for a train so we would need elephant cowboys to run them across the country and they'd have to be on the lookout for elephant rustlers. and we could have elephant rodeos.
I think we should do it with giraffes too, they're my favorite.

I'd better do a GIS for Thai sex organs.

Just to be clear, "Dumbolicious != Dumboldore + delicious". And yes, that is phonetically close to correct, even if it is misspelled.

Well, considering how up to this point elephants well being killed only to have their tusks pulled out and the carcass just left for the vultures, I see this as a vast improvement.

I wonder if it's any better than cow? It would be neat to see giant elephant farms instead of cow farms. Stampedes would be farking intense.

OF COURSE it's a Southeast Asian country that wants to eat endangered species. It's always either them or China.
Rules of thumb: bush meat = southeast asia/subsaharan Africa (depends on the meat),
exotic pet trade = US (China's second place), illegal logging = China, and folk medicine =China/Vietnam.
Any of the Thai Farkers we have here wanna assure us they're at least TRYING to be proactive in this situation? Like, reporting illegal foodstuffs they see on menus? Because the authorities usually listen to whitey. Or maybe campaigning in their neighborhoods?
farking poachers. And they always play innocent when caught. It's disgusting and infuriating.

There is nothing to be 'proactive' about as you will not find this on a menu in Thailand. Nor is there anything to campaign about in neighborhoods, Thailand is not China. Most Thais don't even eat BEEF because it is considered cruel, let alone elephants. If the elephant was even used for food it was probably shipped to China.
There is no evidence that elephant meat restaurants exist in Thailand. It was one official who was quoted with his personal theory why they found two dead elephants, and the media went with it. The most likely reason that the elephants were killed were so that poachers could steal their calves and domesticate them. An elephant calf sells for over $30,000.
In response to this recent event the government is going to institute an elephant DNA database so that people will not be able to capture wild elephants and pass them off as domestic when selling them.

They aren't doing anything about 'elephant meat' restaurants because they have no evidence there are any. If they do find any they shut them down.

Not really, Thais are closer to Indians than Chinese in these matters. They look more Chinese but their religion, writing system, and a lot of the culture come from India. For cultural and religious reasons many don't eat beef or are vegetarian or pescatarian. There is also a specific list of animals prohibited from consumption in Buddhism. They are prohibited from eating human, elephant, horse, dog, snake, lion, tiger, bear, leopard, and hyena. Some rural Thais will eat snake though.

I know that the majority religion is Buddhism, yet poaching is still a huge problem regardless. It's like saying because the majority of Americans are Christian we shouldn't be killing so many people, or have such draconian laws because of "forgiveness".
Yeah, I'm not surprised if they'd be selling the meat to China. All the Chinese have to say is "It's a domesticated elephant!" and they'd be in the clear, because China doesn't have any laws regarding DOMESTIC animals. And even so, they're rarely enforced. Seems like their spies only care about government dissent rather than breaking international law. Their cops are also easily bribed. Vietnam, Cambodia, and Indonesia are the biggest offenders. Laotians seem to realize that tiger bones and rhino horns won't cure a blown off limb. Burma, too, as it's recently coming to light. There are only 300 noseless monkeys left in all of Burma and yet the Burmese continually kill them.
At least the Nepalese and Bhutanese are true to their Buddhism. All of the poaching of snow leopards come from China or India.
And neocons/teabaggers honestly wonder why liberals are so angry.
